Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa Maldives5.0 out of 5.0

We spent 5 nights in an overwater villa in Shangri - LA's Villingili Resort and it was truly amazing. The best holiday ever. Everything in this resort is perfect and first class. This is truly a 5 star resort. The colour of the water is crystal clear blue with colourful fish and turtles in abundance. The food is delicious and the cocktails great. Staff are so happy and friendly and always there to help guests. Do yourself a favour book today and enjoy a slice of heaven in the Maldives .
Villingili island is one of the larger hotel islands occupied solely by Shangri-La. Although this is the most southern island of Maldives, main advantage is that Villingili is right next to the GAN airport which has scheduled domestic flights from Male and international connection from Colombo. Hotel is just 10 min boat ride away. The island itself has shallow, somewhat rocky beaches. There are only few locations where you can swim, unless you choose to stay in one of the water villas with direct water access. Some water villas are closer to beach than others and cannot be used for swimming especially during low tide. The three restaurants in the island are top class. Food is superb although service can be a bit slow. I would recommend taking an all inclusive package as otherwise you’ll easily end up spending usd 100 per person for each meal. Our favorite restaurant was Dr Ali. Each villa is provided by its own bicycles that you use to get around. Alternatively there is a buggy service. Internet connection was fast and complimentary. Service in the island is friendly and attentive. All in all, we had a perfect five day holiday and would certainly consider coming back!
Do yourself a favor and do not choose this hotel for a trip to the Maldives. It was the worst hotel experience I have ever had. The staff is rude and unprofessional. I was told that I could use my voucher for a discount on most nights and after my arrival they told me I could not use it (even though I was in contact with the reservations department prior to making my booking). The way they handled the issue was even worse. After having a 5-minute conversation the duty manager mentioned that he would make a phone call and return back to me but instead dropped the issue completely and forgot about it. Also, the service at the Javvu restaurant is horrendous. We would order a cup of water and it would arrive after we are done with our meal. The food is also of very average standard. Our island host informed us that he would check in with us every day but we never saw him after check-in. Wifi is terrible in almost all parts of the island. The only highlight of our trip was our spa experience. The rest of the trip was ruined by the lack of care provided by the staff and their ignorance towards their customer's issues.
A truly amazing resort with friendly staff who ensure to greet you every time they pass by and make you feel welcome. An ideal getaway for the whole family.Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the resort. The facilities were excellent as well as the food.Shout out to the house keeping staff Asim and Shyam who took great care of us and made sure we were comfortable . Thank you.
The island resort is beautiful, this was our second stay with a Shangri-La after Abu Dhabi and with this hotel brand everything from the staff, hotel and amenities are always to the highest of standards. The bikes provided to cycle around the island are a nice touch. Our deluxe pool villa was absolutely amazing, a small garden area with two separate rooms and our private pool, what more can you ask for!! The natural lagoons are so peaceful with fish, bird and bats providing entertainment. The chi spa as expected offers a relaxing massage in a calm tranquil atmosphere. We really enjoyed the food at Dr. Alis and the coconut and lime lassi was our firm favourite. The hotel offers a boat trip to see dolphins it’s a must! We are not the strongest of swimmers, but you cannot go the Maldives and not snorkel, the hotel provides lessons in its own scuba tank so novices like us could experience the magic of the Indian ocean floor. The gym is clean and great fun. There are a variety of fitness classes to attend and the instructor does high intensity training sessions which we really enjoyed! Visited November 2016
Excellent service 👍🏻. Cleaning staff Asim and Shyam were always at our service and took very good care of us.Comfortable and spacious rooms ..good food ..Thank you very much. We had a pleasant stay.
Once we finally arrived, Villingilli met with all are expectations. The staff are all so friendly and helpful. From our housekeeper to our Island host Atif who continually bent over backwards to ensure everything was to your likeing. Even the hotels top management are on continual watch to ensure a quite lovely stay. The service is excellent in all restaurants and bars. So to the food, loved the BBQ nights at Javvu, thanks Executive chef Daniel. Also the lovely food at Fashalla and most jaw dropping Maldive setting. Dr Ali was also a clever concept offering dishes from three regions on one menu, and a lovely curry to boot. Our Villa was huge and had the wow factor, kept beautifully clean by our housekeeper. We had a A/C fault on our first night but this was dealt with swiftly and we were moved straight away. The kids loved the private pool and being able to access the beach was great. We were made so welcome at the inter department football tournament and it was an honor to be able to join in the award ceremony. Loved our bikes and the sense of adventure and freedom they bring. We got to swim with turtles and sharks. What more can I say. Thanks to all the staff for making our stay so memorable.
This was our second visit to this resort over the past five years. We got married here 5 years ago and this time we came to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. The resort is simply stunning. The rooms are well maintained and luxurious and the environment is second to none. They have a great spa and nature trails. Overall this is a great place to getaway and rejuvenate. Here is where we felt they fell short compared to other options: Kids Club - the room was small, cramped and wasn't as well developed as other resorts we've visited. Water Sports - This is outsourced to a 3rd party. We felt the service of the 3rd party provider wasn't 5 star and they'd benefit to perhaps develop their own capability internally or brush them up to match the service of the hotel. Given this is an island resort we'd expect their brand to reflect on water sport activities. Food - For roughly $2100 USD a night (half board 2bd beach villa with taxes etc), we'd expect better than average to good. Fashala's is their fine dining restaurant. It lacked the wow effect that we had experienced years ago and compared to Shangri La's other properties. Jaavu was outright disappointing. Again, for this price, you'd expect novelty and it was highly generic. Breakfast was virtually identical. It wouldn't take much to alter the menu daily given its a buffet on a 7 day rotation. Dr Ali's is 3 cuisines in one. It was alright. Again, for this price we didn't feel it lived up to its reputation. I should mention there seems to be a management change and we met their new chef. It could be they're in the process of updating things. For our anniversary he did prepare a custom menu which was wonderful. So it seems to be an issue of re shaping their F&B offering. That all said, the experience is strong because of the venue. If they brush up their F&B platform it'd definitely be an overall wow experience.
The English dictionary has a multitude of words to describe the beautiful and the awe inspiring, a diverse lexicon that should in theory cover all the beauty that life can throw our way. However, as i write this review, the words fail me. How can one describe this whirlwind of sensations that is the Shangri La Maldives. From the Turquoise waters of the Addu Atoll coral reef to the beaming smiles of the Maldivians, this resort completely summarizes perfection. As soon as you arrive on the island (via the complimentary boat ride from Gan airport) , you are greeted with an ocean of smiles, a smooth and delicious coconut drink that will quench your thirst as you are ushered by your 24/7 majordomo towards the buggy which will take you to your villa. The villas themselves are the epitome of tropical luxury. They are spacious and come with all the amenities of a 5+ star resort. Our villa was a water villa ( different from the in island villas) and boasted one of the most breathtaking views i have ever seen in my life. I will not spoil it to anyone but the villa terrace should be the first thing you see before even unpacking. Once you’ve taken in the lay of the land, the resort offers many fun activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, dolphin sight seeing, para sailing and much more.. all the water sports you can think of are available at many different rates The restaurants, all three of them, are each in their separate ranks, from the quaint beachside Javvu to the classy Dr.Ali all the way to the luxurious / gastronomical Fashala, there is something for everyone’s taste (and budget). If i have one (very) minor negative comment to say, it would be the missing gesture regarding my and my wife’s honeymoon ( no flowers on bed, no champagne). Overall, our experience in the Shangri la Maldives was made even more amazing thanks to a wonderfully trained and caring staff, we would like to particularly thank Mr.Philippe for his smile and kind words every morning at Breakfast, Thierry for his humour and energy, Nasheed for his passion for the sea and his caring nature, Peter our amazing majordomo always readily available , Yusuf our intrepid snorkeling guide / instructor and finally the little Anna, the amazing intern! Thank you all for the wonderful time we’ve spent at your resort, these our memories that we will cherish forever Cynthia & Tullio
Professional team! Welcoming and smiling for both arrival and departure. We stayed in the amazing water villa. So beautiful and spacious! We went snorkeling but unfortunately saw nothing but the »nemo » fish (which is super cute) but that was it! The pool and beach are also very nice.
