Before our arrival to the resort, we were faced with a complicated situation to which I hope the resort learns from for future visitors. However, the way in which the situation was handled was highly professional by staff members, especially the managerial staff. Not only was it handled professionally, but they handled it with grace and kindness as well. All staff members throughout the resort are very friendly and helpful, their service is excellent. From the club car drivers, the housekeeping, the restaurant chef and all in general. Always greeted with a smile and a greeting and was willing to assist. The service provided by staff members was excellent and very pleasing. In all honesty, such service was only seen in this resort from all the different hotels we have been. Especially the manager, Zeina. To whom I recommend for her high understanding and compensation. The hotel really takes care of their visitors, the hospitality is excellent and the ambiance is beautiful as well. There is a serene calm in the atmosphere of the hotel. The resort itself is out of the ordinary. The villas provide the visitor with excellent services in great detail such as: - Robes and slippers for lounging - Robes for bathing and showering - Flip Flops - Bath Salts - The simple electric services of automatic curtains are highly appreciated - The spa services were highly recommended as well I was very enchanted by the scenery, the activities they offered such as glass bottom boat and luxury dhonis to which we highly enjoyed! As well as snorkeling and kayaking (for free). But, what made this stay from pleasant to unforgettable is the highly professional and friendly staff, who were there to provide us with all services, on time, with a smile and friendly gestures. I highly recommend this tranquil place for anybody thinking to visit!
My family and I spent 4D3N at this resort and had a wonderful time. We booked an overwater villa at the Whispering Palms area which some had said was the best area as it is close to the House Reef where one could do some snorkelling. The water around here is shallow at low tide (barely reaching above my knee) and at high tide would be about my forehead. Highlights of the trip: 1. Snorkeling right outside our villa - just descend the stairs and right there were some rocks and coral formations where we saw parrotfish, triggerfish, box fish, surgeonfish, blue tang, yellow tang, etc. 2. Bicycles for your use to cycle around the whole island 3. Zakaria from Morocco who was our villa butler - always pleasant, smiling and charming, and went out of his way to try to fix my phone which I had dropped into the sea!!! 4. Kids club called Cool Zone which organised coconut painting, crab hunting and crab racing, hand painting, bracelet making, etc. Most of this stuff is free although other activities like cookie baking and cotton candy making incurs a fee. 5. Dinner at Fashala - well worth the US$220 that we paid for a family of four. And if kids below 12 don't like the kids' menu, they can choose something from the a la carte menu and it's 50% off! 6. Beautiful design of the villa However our trip was marred by a couple of issues: 1. On our second night, we were woken up by a loud and somewhat frequent banging noise. Upon inspection, it was a service door that we were not able to access that was being blown around by the wind and thus banging away. It was 4am and soon we were all awake. We called the service centre and they sent someone to fix it within 15min 2. More disappointing was that we found the slatted blinds to be quite dusty. We got housekeeping to wipe up the rather thick layer of dust but after they left, we found that the pull-down blinds behind the slatted blinds were black with dust and mould. Again we had to call housekeeping to wipe it up. That was definitely not in keeping with the quality of Shangri-La that I have come to expect whenever I stay with them ... Some other first world problems: - earbuds were not replenished by housekeeping - water not hot enough in the shower The other thing to watch out for is dining options. There are three restaurants at the resort and of those, Javvu was the one that was always open. Of the three days that we were there, Fashala and Dr. Ali was open for dinner for only one of those nights so we had to have all our other meals either at Javvu or in-room dining. I am not sure why the management does not alternate the nights where Fashala and Dr. Ali are available instead of having them BOTH closed on the same night. Would I come back again? Maybe - maybe not. There are too many other resorts in the Maldives. I came to Shangri La because of my prior experience with the brand in Singapore, Chiang Mai, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, etc. but I have to say that this holiday fell short of my expectations. Just for kicks, I asked my two daughters to rate their holiday out of 10. This was their response: 10 year old:- Food: 8/10 Kids' Cool Zone: 9/10 Room: 8/10 Zakaria our villa butler: 10/10 7 year old:- Food: 8.5/10 Kids' Cool Zone: 10/10 (especially the hermit crabs!) Room: 10/10 Zakaria our villa butler: 11/10 (no that's not a typo!)
There's nothing new I can really add to the glowing praise for this resort: high end; excellent staff; expensive everything; more food that any person should be eating, beautiful setting. Rainy season now so a little more time spent inside (or in the pool), but that's just as comfortable. Golf course is kept in acceptable standard for what you'd expect, but the greens are poor. Most people probably don't go to this place for quality golf :) It's a tough little 9-holer with the constant prevailing breeze and fairly narrow landing areas. Sri Lankan Airlines direct flight to Gan is very handy and saves the crazy overpriced internal Maldives flights.
We have just spent 7 nights here and absolutely loved it. The water villa was spotless and strikingly large with wooden floors and high wood beam ceilings. The food was fabulous and the dining staff were friendly and professional. We ate at all 3 restaurants.... Javuu, Dr. Ali, and Fashala. It's impossible to pick a favorite. Eating at Dr. Ali on the beach under own private cabana was a highlight. Grounds are well maintained. You are provided your own bikes... and biking through the trails and golf course helped to burn off the great food. Viewing the sunset on the beach over drinks at Manzaru bar every evening was priceless. Used the spa twice and it was great each time. Overall a wonderful and beautiful resort. There is plenty to do over 7 days without feeling bored... although we found ourselves just wanting to relax on the water villa terrace and taking the occasional dip down the stairs into the lagoon. Would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a quiet romantic stay. Once in a lifetime experience... too bad we can't easily fly here every year!
5 Nights - All Inclusive full board + drinks rate around $3900 USD/5 nights, Overwater Villa Where can I start but to say that this resort is magnificent. The resort is located within Addul Atoll which is the southernmost Atoll of the Maldives. This in theory means the reefs are suppose to be the least disturbed of the Maldives. The resort can be accessed via a 10minute speedboat ride form Gan Island International Airport - which has commercial flights from Colombo, Sri Lanka or a rather expensive Maldivian Airlines from Male. At the airport you are greeted by staff from the resort who escort you to a bus for a 2 minute ride to the jetty and then a 10 minute speedboat transfer to the island. Upon arrival to the island you are greeted by many more staff who provide the ladies with a floral bouquet and everyone with a fresh coconut drink. Our host Samander greeted us and took us to our Overwater Villa 121 in the Whispering Palms section of the resort. The water is this region is calmer but with more seaweed than the Serenity Bay section of the resort. Paperwork is sorted in the villa. The Villa has a wow factor. It is very large and is well divided into different sections. The fit out is of excellent quality with high ceilings and wooden floors. The nighttime lighting in the bathroom is excellent. There is a huge bathtub and two separate vanities. There are also separate indoor and outdoor showers to cater for all tastes. The resort attempts to be eco friendly and the room has a feature which switches off the air conditioning when the door to the outside deck is opened. Outside there is a two tier deck with plenty of comfortable furniture to lounge around and direct entry into the ocean. Everything you could think has been accommodated for even the essentials such as toothbrush, shaver, women's beauty accessories and also baby products and nappies are provided complementary. The minibar has a wide range of drinks and snacks to choose from. As this was our anniversary stay the management provided us with a bottle of prosecco. On the first night housekeeping prepared a decorated bed and bath. There is a complementary fruit basket that is replenished daily to help with healthy snacks. A special mention to our housekeeper Shyam who excelled in maintaining the rooms twice a day and helped us with all concerns. Transport around the island is either by your own bicycle outside your villa or golf buggy which you can request by telephone. It is good fun riding around the island on your bicycle during the day. We were on the all inclusive food and beverage rate which I would strongly recommend to all, as it takes the worry out of getting an unexpected bill at the end. It entitles you to buffet breakfast at Javuu, 2 course lunch at Javuu and a 4 course dinner at Javuu or 90USD credit per person for dinner at Dr Ali or Fashala. The all inclusive beverage menu can be had at all bars and restaurants (except room minibar) includes a selection of white wines, red wines, whiskies, gin, vodka, tequlia, beers, cocktails and all non alcoholic drinks. Javuu is the main restaurant and has dining on the beach or air conditioned indoors. Breakfast is the standard buffet and has a wide selection of hot/cold foods, with Western, Asian and Maldivian covered. Barista coffees and juices are also included. One slight downside is that the buffet is rather similar every day, with one or two changes only - however, there was such a wide variety of choices that you could change your selection daily. Lunches and dinner are more of an ala carte affair. Lunches have lighter burger, salad, pasta, pizza, asian cuisine and grill. Dinners are more formal and offer many more grilled options - many of which require an extra monetary supplement. The special seafood buffet on the Monday night was excellent with plenty of seafood and meat variety. Fashala is more of your fine dining restaurant again with excellent meat and seafood entrees and mains. We found that the quality of the food to be fantastic. Dr Ali has a selection of Chinese, Arabic and Indian menus. The one time we dined here the quality of the Arabic recommended fish dish was very poor - very dry and inedible. All in all I would rate Fashala as the best restaurant closely followed by Javuu with Dr Ali a distant third. The sunset view from Fashala and Javuu were fantastic when the weather was not cloudy. The one advantage with a large resort like Shangri La is that there are numerous activities available. There is the gym and tennis courts, the water sports, dive centre boating excursions, golf course, econature activities and kids club and cool zone for families. Snorkeling gear can be hired and is complementary. The kids club has an awesome play area for younger kids and the staff were extremely helpful. The eco centre activities are very informative and the island tour by buggy was extremely insightful and gave you an overview of the island. Coconut climbers and coral planting were also very interesting activities. Many thanks to Jynkie the eco centre manager who was very informative, helpful and friendly. From the dive centre we did the glass bottom boat activity and was able to see areas of the reef and sealife including huge turtles. I did partake a round of golf and this was great fun on a rather empty course. The course is a narrow with lots of hazards to lose your wayward balls. I played in the afternoon heat but I it would be more pleasant for a late afternoon or early morning round of golf. The pool area has 6 pool cabanas on a first come first serve basis. They even provide you with an eski filled with ice and water. There are also plenty of lounge chairs on the beach. The pool bar is nearby, however, I would have preferred if they were more active in coming to seek out orders, rather then you having to go to the bar and order - even though they did deliver. The beaches and the resort are well maintained by the numerous staff constantly sweeping and gardening on a daily basis. Every morning the seaweed on the beach is swept and removed to maintain the picture postcard view. The weather is a moderate 30 degrees on most days, however, rain showers throughout the day are common but do not normally last for more than an hour or so. The humidity was very high and even in the evening if we ate outdoors we felt rather sticky and in need of a shower afterwards. The resort host does confirm with you the details of your departure one day prior and all the necessary checkout details and even invites you to settle the account the day prior if you leave early to avoid the morning queues. We did not have any issues with the morning check out even though there were 30+ guests leaving. Overall a wonderful resort. Plenty to do within 5 days. Could easily stay for a week without feeling bored. Staff were excellent and welcoming. Would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for either a quiet romantic stay or for a activity packed stay.
This is my first visit to The Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives and I am travelling on my own. After having experienced The Shangri-La London, at the Shard many times it was an easy choice to select a hotel for this trip. My stay is 9 nights and from the moment I arrived (I am actually still staying for 3 more nights) the resort staff has been exceeding expectations. Any request has been handled swiftly and any minor issues (nothing to be worth mentioning) has been rectified immediately. While I would not want any member of the team that I have been in contact with I would like mention a few people that have been going out of their way to accommodate every of my requests. The duty managers Irina & Gretchen, my island host Ayyan, the diving instructors Amaia and Carrie and the spa therapists Andres and Basheer. I would highly recommend a stay at this beautiful island and will return. The tree top villa I have been allocated is completely private, offers breath-taking views of the Indian ocean, a proper infinity pool that is large enough to actually swim. There are many more things I could mention but it is simply perfect from start to end and I look forward to my final three nights and diving excursions. Thank you Shangri-La for making this stay such a memorable one.
This resort was breath-taking beautiful, and our water villa was incredible. It was so clean and beautifully put together, and the staff was wonderful. We get comfortable bikes to bike around the island and my husband and I LOVED that. It was so much fun. We were only there for 2 nights though. The breakfast was good. The food is extremely overpriced, and that is the only issue we had at all with our stay. It’s obvious the resort invests its money into upkeeping the resort. We LOVED our stay and water villa.
Absolutely fantastic, the water villa are very spacious, the food is excellent, the people are greta, Philippe and is team did a great job, beautiful 9 holes golf course....we really enjoyed our stay....
My wife and I spent 5 nights at the Shangri-La in Maldives. It was one of our best vacation and the hotel is a big factor. Our villa was right on the water and we were able to enjoy a few spectacular days snorkeling in the crystal clear water. The house reef was very impressive, and comparable, if not better than the experience offered by paid excursion tour. Our villa was very spacious and we have complete privacy throughout our stay. The staff were great, always ensuring that our needs were met. There were many beautiful spots on the island and no shortage of activities to keep us occupied. Very highly recommended for couples and honeymooners.
