Staff: excellent staff and customers service. Location: I enjoy walking it’s a good secluded location and yet pretty close to the station, close to the shopping area and tourist main attraction. Onsen: they do have a nice onsen in the basement. It’s quite and relaxing. Room: it’s a good size but the bathroom is way too small so we basically showered in the public bathroom in the basement after dipping in the onsen. I would say overall experience is great.

Nishiyama Ryokan is a solid ryokan in the middle of Kyoto. It's a 5 minute walk from the subway and there's even a shopping street nearby. The cleanliness of the place is impeccable and the staff are extremely friendly and eager to help in any way they can. The only con that I can think of is that the dinner and breakfast that you order is served in the dining room as opposed to your room like many other ryokans which seems odd given how much more expensive the food is at Nishiyama Ryokan compared to other establishments.

HOTEL STAFF WAS SO FRIENDLY THAT MAKES YOU ARE AT HOME . THE ONLY THING MISSING WAS THAT THERE IS NO FOOD FOR KIDS .

Great way to experience staying in a traditional ryokan with onsen and great meal options. Staff was very friendly. Didn't break the bank either. Very close to the big nearby food markets. They have a $10/24hr bike rental place right down the street which was perfect and let us see the entire city by bike (best way to do it!)

The owners had a tea ceremony every morning. Just watching them prepare the tea in such a precise, delicate and ceremonial way, coupled with the anticipation, made the tea taste awesome. The tea itself was of superb quality. It was so thick it almost tasted like a smoothie. The room was very clean and simple with a private toilet and bathroom with the option of going to the public bath which was an experience all by itself. The public baths were separated for men and women and were very clean. My wife was impressed by the garden view from the public bath and from the tea room. If you book this place I recommend you include the great japanese breakfast offered. We wore the hotel provided kimono (bathrobe) to the breakfast and that combined with the soothed and calmed atmosphere made for an experience unlike any other conventional hotel. When we left the owners walked us out to the door and went outside. It was like family.
