The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata5.0 out of 5.0

Very well appointed hotel with very friendly and helpful staff who provide service with a smile. Rooms were quiet even though we overlooked a very busy street. They were also comfortable and spacious. Several restaurants to eat in which provided an excellent choice of well cooked and prepared food and drinks. Step out of the front door and become immersed in Indian street life.
Whilst the hustle bustle of Kolkata goes on outside, The Oberoi Grand provides a luxurious escape, complete with pool area on the inner garden area. From the moment you arrive, you know that this is a quality hotel: warm welcome, efficient check-in, very friendly staff and after the initial registration, check in is completed in your room. Rooms are spacious and very well appointed, nothing missing or needing to be requested. Food standards match the rest of the hotel and it is refreshing to find a 'no individual tipping' policy stated in the room, all tips are pooled. The single blip was a cracked mug in my room, but this is a very minor point (I may have even cracked it myself). Back again in a couple of days and looking forward to it already.
This was my first visit to this hotel, and it came out a top class experience. Very good rooms, great food and amazing staff members ready to help you every time you need something. Never before experience in any Hotel in India or abroad. Keep it up. And the delighting part is that its great value for money even if you are on business or leisure travel.
An oasis of calm among the buzz of Kolkata. The staff are friendly, attentive and helpful, the two restaurants excellent and nothing is too much. A genuine willingness to ensure that the stay is as good as it can be. It is not opulent luxury of some top hotels but it does not need to be to deliver five star service.
The OBEROI Grand ; through years have been the standard of excellence and continues to retain so with its ever grandeur way of welcoming Guests When we go to hotels....we pay for the services and the elegance and not just a product to enjoy and that is what the Oberoi Group continues to do so even after years no matter how many new hotels opens up in Calcutta. From the front office manager to the housekeeping and from even the butlers to the GM of the hotel every one would make sure that you are absolutely well catered to I have to thank Varun and his team along with Chef Banerjee and Sabrina the F&B team that all of u join as a team to make the guests feel just so very pampered. However the highlight of the hotel is the brand new Bar and the fantastic new Resturant 363 The presence of natural light filtering in through the glass top and the picture frames of Erstwhile Kings is a well thought design layout keeping with the spirit of Grand . Take the Pool Facing rooms ; they are large and very comfortable for older guests who would enjoy walking a bit around It's such a delight to come back to Grand and do enjoy the experience of seeing Calcutta with Nabeel who would tell y small stories about it . Kudos to the team of Obeori to blend architecture , elegance and Grand experience all in one. Dr Ayan Banerjee
The location is great for getting out and about in Kolkata and the hotel really is a retreat from the noise and bustle of the city. The reception team are excellent and welcomed us very warmly after a long 24 hours of travel. Our room was pleasant, had everything one could need and was quite spacious. The en-suite had a great shower and again had everything one would expect at this level. Breakfast. Mmm. Alas, needs some work. It could just be me but Oberoi have confused subservience with service and this is nowhere more apparent that during the breakfast service. The staff are all very pleasant, but on day one we had to fight to get coffee and a menu, day two was fine but again service was slow and rather poor. Day three the breakfast was inedible as the chef had grilled the life our of a hollandaise sauce that left a really rather unpleasant greasy crust on the eggs. There are lots of staff, but I'm really not so sure they know what they are doing. The service could be much more efficiently delivered if the team were better trained and maintained a focus on the job in hand. To finish on a positive, housekeeping is probably the best I've experienced anywhere, ever. Their attention to detail is second to none. I was using a flight ticket as my bookmark, they placed an Oberoi one on my book. We scattered change in our room, housekeeping gave us a rather sweet bank in the form of a duck. My partner brought a pile of photographic equipment, they left a lens cleaning kit in the room. I could go on but that's just a few of the details. Exceptional service from the housekeeping team! Thank you. All in all a lovely stay, just polish that breakfast service!
I was in Kolkata and booked this room for a skype interview. I had upgraded my stay to a business pack with included an early check in and an airport drop etc. When I came by my room wasn't ready, then I was informed only rooms in the smoking corridor are available. On insisting that I would not prefer that they upgraded me to a better room which was nice. My only problem was with the doorman to whom I had requested to book me a cab. But instead of going forth and doing this he asked for my credentials and if I am actually staying at the hotel (since I am a young girl all by herself and not a foreigner) I had to tell him twice and also give him my room number before he decided to call me a cab. I am not saying this is not common in india to be judged if you are a single girl travelling alone but I do not expect such behaviour from the hotel ranked Number 1 in Kolkata. Everything else was great otherwise. THey had also given me a present. That was very sweet. PS : This was in April 2015 but since tripadvisor wouldn't let me select a date from then, I selected september 2016 but since my friend recently faced the same problem, I am writing this review now.
This is a magnificent Heritage Hotel with superb food and hotel staff who are welcoming and attentive. Loved the ambience and attention to detail in every area. Rooms are large and tastefully decorated. The staff are awesome.
Over the last few years, I have been to The Oberoi Grand on various occasions - sometimes to celebrate a milestone at Baan Thai or La Teresse and sometimes to Burdwan-Coochbehar for celebrations. Some things about Oberoi Grand have remained consistent - their courteous staff, ever helpfulness nature and the serenity of the property. While Baan Thai has always been the best experience for Thai food lovers, I have also personally witnessed how pathetic their food quality is when it comes to catering at Burdwan-Coochbehar during events. Recently I was involved in planning an event there and upon comparison with other star venues in Kolkata, I realised how "limited" the menu was when it came to catering options. I wont go into details hoping that the authorities will review the menu they offer for events..but just a word of advise...please try to ensure that the options available cover the bases well. Oberoi is known for their top quality food which reflects at their signature restaurants, but it doesn't at all reflect at the catering tables. The Indian cuisine was below average and the continental option was bland - quite a shock for me! I had personally suggested the starter menu (of 2V and 2 NV) from their limited options only to find that the "lamb option" was completely overlooked and the service was limited to 1 NV and 2 V options only while the deal was for 2 NV & 2V options. This is completely unethical. Upon prodding as to where was the 2nd NV starter, the staff hurriedly brought it in much later - by which time most guests had proceeded towards the lunch area. The whole idea behind organising the event at Oberoi and not some other star hotel in Kolkata was to ensure that the guests had an experience of a lifetime but unfortunately, the food part didnt live up to the expectations at all! While the service was impeccable, the delays were frustrating. If I have asked for the counters to be open for lunch at 2pm, I mean its 2pm and not 2.15pm. Will I convince or think about hosting another event at Oberoi? NO unless they improve!
The best hospitality and ambience . Special thanks to Trisha who took care of our short overnight stay . Will keep with me special memory of Kolkatta sweetly gifted by Oberoi if you have an early check out small breakfast setup with fruits and coffee will Wait you at reception and you can pack it with you if desired
