Please ignore the poor reviews! This is a fantastic place to stay. The beachfront location is stunning, as is the bar (where you can have drinks and snacks brought to your sun lounger at any time of the day), and the staff are delightful. They offer a beach towel service which is very thoughtful, and can provide any information you may require about the island. The room was large, airy, clean (and cleaned thoroughly every day), with a lovely added touch of flowers left on our bed as a surprise for our honeymoon, as well as locally-made bath and shower products. Yes, there are mosquitos on Holbox (not the hotel's fault!), but an ample mosquito net is provided over the bed, and windows are netted, so that should be no problem. As for the location, it is a short walk (about 1 minute) to the centre of the little town, bars, restaurants and cash machines etc. Service is personal, attentive without being overbearing, and friendly, and you really get the impression that your comfort and enjoyment is paramount to the staff. It may not be the ultimate luxury hotel, but lying on a sun lounger under a palm trees, metres from the Caribbean, being brought a cold beer or margarita, feels pretty luxurious to me and it's hard to understand why people could complain. My only complaint has nothing to do with the hotel, but rather the surprisingly large number of guests who rush down to the beach at 8.30 am to lay out their towels on sun loungers before disappearing off for hours before returning, just to make sure no one else can "take their place" in the meantime. It's selfish and anti-social, and in my opinion the only improvement the hotel could make is to ban the practice! Thank you La Palapa, we'll be back!
While I found the staff to be incredibly accommodating, I don't know that I would recommend either our hotel or Isla Holbox. The beachfront at La Palapa is 100% shaded unless you chose one of the plastic chairs literally sitting in the water. Should you be interested in tanning or direct sunlight, you're required to find a spot at a neighboring hotel; challenging as the color of the towels correspond with each resort so it's easy for staff to spot and shoo you away if you're not staying there. It's worth noting, however, that there are a few hotels where you can pay for a beach chair/bed for the day if you arrive early enough. It's also worth noting that the food and drink at La Palapas were also just so-so, as was the room. (Though I did love the jazz they played at the bar each evening.) Actually, the food on the island writ large left much to be desired (El Chapulim was the best food we had) and there was a stench that no one tells you about on many stretches of the beach's main drag. Were we to go again, we would have preferred to stay at CasaSandra (the best hotel food we had and also the best yoga), Casa Las Tortugas (which also had good food -- especially breakfast -- and fantastic massage therapists), or even Amaite (which we would also recommend for yoga and massage. If you do get a massage, don't ask for reflexology. They have it listed but don't know how to do it). Speaking of yoga, visit the holboxeno site to find daily schedules. In short, while Isla Holbox is a fantastic place to unplug, everything is walkable, and the culture of the island is charming, I can't say that it's a location I would need to revisit soon. There are better places to recharge which don't have to come at the expense of amenities, cuisine, or wellness-related activities.
We spent five nights at this hotel and really enjoyed it. Our bed was super comfy, the walls pretty thick so we didn't hear our neighbors too much and really enjoyed the roof top deck. The one bummer was the blender at the bar that would start in the morning and be used all day long. It was our alarm clock every morning. We did eat at the restaurant the first night but then realized it was better to go explore the many options near by than choose from the limited menu. The bathroom was roomy, shower great, we loved the use of shells for both the shower head and sink. The front desk staff spoke english and was very helpful. And back to the roof top deck, there was never anyone up there so we enjoyed laying in the hammocks every day! The beach area is not huge but you are right in town and on the beach, so it was fine. If we went back to Holbox I would highly consider staying here again!
This is our second time coming to Holbox Island. We enjoyed our last visit so we decided to come back. We requested the same room as last year and the hotel staff made sure we where accommodated. I believe this place is a little jem. We enjoy the resort the staff is very helpful. Great restaurant. We will defffinately come back. Thank you Monica for making our stay relaxing.
This property is exactly as billed. On the beach, lots of Palapas. There are some rooms better than others. For example, our room on the 2nd floor corner was less than glorious ...we did have a balcony overlooking the beach, however was lacking comfortable chairs and a strange shape. I did visit some rooms on the 3rd level and seemed more spacious, open & airy. Advice, view the room options before you settle in. Hotel personnel pleasant. Breakfast in the hotel was fine and reasonable....was surprised of the extra 30 peso for 2nd coffee. Hotel location convenient to town & 'dining' options.
This is probably the best located hotel on the island. It's right on a very well tended area of the beach and has shade; plus it's about two blocks from the hot corner bar and three from the center of downtown, which means that it's easy to get downtown, but it's still quiet at night. The hotel is very clean and well run. But, the rooms are pretty dated, have only one plug in, no fridge and average bathrooms ... for nearly $400 Canadian a night. The good beach chairs are reserved early in the morning, the office staff is busy if you have a question, etc. They seem able to fill it at that price, so I don't blame them for charging it, just don't think that your getting the equivalent of a similar priced room price anywhere else.
This is a real beachfront hotel, wind and sound of waves welcome you all day long. The hotel staff were very friendly and professional. Common area was kept clean all the time and seaweeds at front beach were taken care of every day. If you would like, you can stargaze at its rooftop. I highly recommend.
Pros: Staff was very friendly and helpful, room and grounds were immaculate, great view from the balcony of the room (probably only 40 yards from the water), ample beach furniture, nice restaurant/bar on site, quiet but centrally located to town center, good mattress, good air conditioning, very good value for the cost. Cons: Limited hot water when we were there, which was not a big deal for us, and would have been nice to have a small refrigerator in the room. Overall: Excellent value for the money, the location could not have been any better, would stay again with no hesitation.
La Palapa is at the same time directly located at the beach and on the other hand right in the “city-centre” of Holbox (don’t expect too much of a city, it is still an island...). The beach is nice, you get free towels and can choose your place to stay on the beach. The oceanview is lovely. However, there are a few weaknesses as well. The rooms are rather simple but with air-condition. The terace in front of the rooms are nice. If you have a room on the base floor you will have a lot of people walking around, which somehow destroys the beauty. Do not expect (constant) warm water (which might be due to the eco-focus of the island). It dis not harm us (given that the weather is really hot down there) but you should consider it when making your choice. The windows do not close 100% meaning that during nighttime you can hear the waves on the beach. This is nice but at the same time you also hear each and everybody coming home lat at night which might make your sleep a little uncomfortable. Staff was friendly but the service is a little poor after all. We arrived at about 1pm and wanted to check in. We were told that check in is at 3pm at the earliest given that they needed to clean up the rooms (the days afterwards we have not seen any of the cleaning stuff walking around after 12am, so I cant really understand the argument but ok...). The bar/restaurant is nothing special but really pricy. We did not have breakfast here but went downtown which was nice. After all it is a little too expensive for what you get. If you are ready for a more basic experience in a nice surrounding - go for it. If you are looking for a premium hotel at the beach - better look elsewhere.
If your idea of a great getaway is an extremely laid back chunk of paradise with no cars and sand roads, you should definitely try Isla Holbox. And, when you do, you can't do much better than the Beachfront La Palapa Hotel. The accommodations are really unique - all the sink and shower faucets are conch shells - the restaurant has some really great options, and the staff is absolutely wonderful. More helpful and happy people you'd have a hard time finding. You'll be close to pretty much everything there - great restaurants and bars - and the shopping was surprisingly varied. We found some really unique artwork, handicrafts and clothing. No one's in a hurry here. Why would you be. Turn off your cellphone (I know) and enjoy this wonderful hotel and location.
