Can't say enough great things about this beautiful gem of a hotel. We spent an incredible 4 nights at Punta Caliza. Comfortable clean rooms, architecturally stunning, amazing breakfast every morning and THE BEST Mezcal margarita I have ever had. Big thank you to the general manager, Temoc for your unrivaled hospitality and for giving me and my friends an experience we will never forget. Cannot wait to return!
Punta Caliza was a lovely stay. Great food, hospitality and location. The room was tranquil, clean and very comfortable. Architecturally stunning place with a very relaxing vibe. I really enjoyed meeting other guests and relaxing in this beautiful paradise.
From the start, it wasn't good. No welcome drinks. Strange, akward welcome by 'concierge' lady who kept telling us how good the restaurant is at the hotel, we shouldn't go anywhere else for lunch or dinner, how good and unexpensive is the massage, that we should do it everyday (in a common area with no dedicated space or privacy and still more expensive than anywhere else on the beach, above owners rooms in a public « bar area » with stools and a sink...) OK, pass. Still, no clear direction to free amenities such as the beach which we had to ask staff from other hotel's beach. Never been told or nowhere written beach or bkfast schedule. No personalised map of the island or recommendation, they gave us the same map that every hotel has, very mass tourism style, not for a boutique hotel... First points : IT'S SO EXPENSIVE FOR THE ISLAND, THE STANDING, THE LOCATION, THE SERVICE, THE EVERYTHING! Not because it's family run that it shouldn’t be professional Not because designed by a great architect that it shouldn’t be functional Understaffed and unqualified staff, at the beach, at breakfast, at front desk, at cleaning, at cooking! No real manager, just the owners and then non-professional staff Owners son : drunk with people from beach at 4pm, then took them to pool area to drink tequila and be noisy by the pool! What a terrible behavior. It looks like this family wanted a house in Holbox and made it into a hotel but you need to think that there are human beings working very hard to afford spending a lot of money of your terrible hotel, and wasting their money! It feels as if everything stopped once the architect gave the plans, it was executed but no one thought of how to make this hotel functional and enjoyable for guests!!! SO NOISY! = Paper thin can hear everything + External boiler noise waking us up every 5 minutes Terrible 1st night, dogs barking and various boiler noises, neighbors... The first reaction from 'concierge' lady ; negated what happened "no one complained, I didn't hear it, that's not true". Then, we were proposed to change rooms but it was one room away and noise similar, so we passed and got our earplugs and sleeping pills, how relaxing on holidays.... In the main area: very loud pool machining + road with construction trucks, surprisingly noisy golf carts (because not electric) and motorcycles. SMALLEST SPACE FOR A HOTEL EVER= Public Toilets are litterally in the reception with the roof opened a few centimeters away from seats and the shower right in front of desk. Global issue : lack of space: 15m wide at the public area, maybe 30m at the end by the rooms, 100m long? = Too small for 12 rooms. And; It is litterally on the street. On the other side : constant view on a abandonned lot, and its parking, from the room with an opening in the wall right on our bed, we can be seen naked at all times! No lounge area, 6 tanning mats by the pool (for 24 guests max), 3 hammocs installed around restaurant hours, not 1 sofa, only restaurant tables and bar stools. We felt claustrophobic ! BEACH= Beach side entrance to the hotel is left pretty abandoned Beach very nice, a 10minute walk from the hotel, but only ready at 11h Only (very expensive) water and alcohol, but cocos and mangos sold on the beach 0 service at the beach, not once asked what we would want, no menu on the beds 1st day at the beach; arrived at 9:48, said beach opens at 10, we asked for corner mats. He took 1h to finish the beach, went on his phone and I went to ask him for the mats we asked him an hour ago to be set up as they were the only ones not ready. We had to force him but he said that it was owners policy. = The best corner mats were reserved for rent, not people staying at hotel !!!! HOW SHOCKING !!!!! Later he was drinking with renting people Some hotels take algae off BUT Our beach = most algae FOOD= Bkfast starts at 8, waited 1h first day, terrible service, ok cuisine but random Staff tells us breakfast can officially start at 8:30 because kitchen cannot make specific noise before that, because it is under a room ! Nothing on the table for 45mns, then begged for something to eat, woke up since 6h30 and barely slept, then bread was finally but on everyone’s table = industrial No written menu : the breakfast is included but no one tells you exactly all the possibilities you can have, so you order very little as you don't know what you can get !!! GOOD way to save money here!! Staff smoking right at the entrance rather than serving Juice to be served ourselves from a plastic bucket : how ecologic in this eco-hotel eco-island Loudest gas deliveries in the middle of breakfast = remember you are on the street, the hotel plot is 15 meter wide !!! Lunch is random but overpriced, go somewhere else, twice as expensive No written menu again Dinner : setting is bad and very expensive Stuck between reception, lounge beds of the pool, generator of the pool and the abandoned lot, it is still 15m wide and you are still at the same spot as for breakfast, lunch, snack or even anytime you want to chill as they is no other common area than this !!! The lighting is terrible at dinner, very strong and industrial, needs a couple of candles or flowers or music or anything to make this place feel alive !!! Snack : waited 45mns for a bowl of ice cream and crumble, 1st waiter forgot to order and left the hotel DIRTY = The windows, the sheets, the towels, the common area, the bedroom, the bathroom, the everything was DIRTY! As someone said, it will age so fast !!! They asked for gratuity cleaning with envelope = how shocking considering cleaning was barely done, only putting bed sheet correctly, I have never been asked for gratuity for cleaning ever in my life !!! Never saw 1 person manually clean the POOL, lots of stuff floating, 'private' pool is so dirty! -- I got an eye infection after the first night at the hotel, had to get antibiotics at the local pharmacy, and it didn't get better until I left the hotel after 3 nights at the hotel = My doctor told me that it certainly came from a huge amount of dust and dirty sheets / towels I was in contact with = a huge problem of hygiene in this hotel !!! Other BAD POINTS= -- Wifi terrible, not whole island, good at other hotel For boarding passes we used the desk computer which worked perfectly fine, showing there is no issue for they personal computer! The son's owner lied saying the wifi was like this everywhere and that it was down... But on their personal computer it works and everywhere on the island it works too! -- Late check out : no safe locker room, no private bathroom or place to change : you can have a shower 2 meters in front of reception or go to the toilet 30 centimeters away but that's not very private is it? -- Only transfer in Mexico (dealt with 6 hotels) paid directly at hotel, way more expensive than all expenses laid out : took a very big commission GOOD POINTS= Visually / aesthetically satisfying (even though it's super dirty) Bathroom : no plastic containers Good bedding Bedroom globally BUT = Non existent garden by our rooms wall and super dirty Nice « private » beach Island >> but all that we enjoyed doing came from our own research PRIOR to coming as no wifi to check anything else = be sure to come prepared Colombian bartender (only good staff) TO CONLUDE= It is a tale of instagram age = picture pretty but not in real life, for this price must pass absolutely ! If you want to see it, go take a picture for your instagram and pass your way Too expensive, should be 150 not 250 = 4 star prices for a 1 star hotel Never been asked if I was ok, if I was enjoying my stay, nothing = letting you know now I was not Ok It feels that everything this hotels does is to get more money, to maximise the profits, but itsn't not a bank, this is the service industry and you need to make people happy on holiday, or at least pretend that you try!!! I felt ripped off and scammed by this hotel, and judging by the comments I am not the only one. Now I don't regret coming to Holbox, Holbox is not the problem, PUNTA CALIZA IS THE PROBLEM. They are taking advantage of being located in a place becoming increasingly touristic (too touristic), and of having an instagrammable architecture. But do not be fooled, its is a NOISY EXPENSIVE DISHONEST DIRTY ILL-MANAGED (or non-managed), hotel! WORST HOTEL EVER! MUST PASS IMMEDIATELY !!!!
We stayed here as a group of friends for my birthday. I can’t say enough about the town, the hotel, the people, and just the overall vibe. The service was personalized and attentive. The rooms are beautiful and unique. The food and drinks were delicious. The property has a great story. Ernesto, Gustavo, Irving, Vanessa...we left feeling like we had new friends. We are already planning a trip back.
It’s unlike me to write a negative review, and I wrote a much longer version of this but because it’s a small family business and I’ve decided edit it down and try to keep to the point. The point being- I wouldn’t stay here again. Our experience was very different to what some of these reviews suggest (though not all- read carefully) and generally we saw several other guests complaining during their time there, so we don’t think it’s unique to us. The positives - The hotel design is reasonably nice if impractical - The beach area is beautiful - The staff at the bar / beach are great The negatives - Our room was not clean and we slept in someone else’s dirty sheets with their left over stuff in the bathroom. - The management refuse to apologise for anything and fail to put things right when you raise problems (like the above) - It does not feel like the management are concerned at all about guests experience, and their attitude is very different to those who are working hard elsewhere in the hotel - The WiFi does not work. They’ll say this is because you’re on an island, but both hotels either side have excellent WiFi if you buy a drink at the bar. They don’t care if you find this frustrating. Ultimately there are much better places to stay on Holbox. Don’t be seduced by the nice photos. We are disappointed we stayed here, but if the management had shown any sense of warmth or compassion, or apologised for the oversights, we would have left feeling less frustrated by the experience. It’s quite sad as the building shows potential, if just doesn’t feel very well run, especially when you take into account the high prices. NB- We lost our key at the beach (totally our fault) and had to pay the costs for that (totally reasonable, although again we think it could have been asked for with some compassion). We accept our mistake but watch out to avoid that cost.
If you’re planning a trip to Holbox, you seriously can’t stay anywhere else! It’s truly not your typical hotel experience, from the incredible architectural design to the delicious breakfast- and mezcal margaritas- served poolside. Our room was spotless, beautiful, and somehow connected yet totally private feeling (again, amazing architecture). What really made the experience magical, though, was the people; everyone at Punta Caliza was so wonderful. It’s a family run hotel, and they really make you feel like you’re a part of it. Holbox itself is a dream too, from night skies full of more stars than you’ve ever seen to an ocean glowing with bioluminescence. My friends and I can’t wait to visit again!
We just came back from a wonderful 8 night stay at Punta Caliza. The hotel's pool is really unique and is a great place to lounge when you need a break from the beach. The rooms are nicely sized (we stayed in a family room) with plenty of storage, and a loft to put suitcases and anything else you don't need during the stay. The location is a stone's throw from the beach (they have their own beach setup with shade, loungers, bar etc), and a quick walk into the center of town. The breakfasts were amazing. Every morning a different dish was offered, and each was delicious. If you aren't in the mood for whatever is on offer, they are happy to give you yogurt, fruit, eggs, whatever. We found the entire staff to be wonderful. They were friendly, helpful, and they really made us feel at home. This place is very small, with only 12 rooms, so its not for everyone, but if you like small hotels and want to stay in a place where the vibe is relaxed and accommodating, this is a great option.
Staying at Punta Caliza is a dream! The property is beautiful and the rooms are excellent as well. I would go back in a heartbeat. It was the perfect destination for a girl's trip. The staff is wonderful and they can tell you anything you need to know about Holbox. The manager, Cuauh, is the biggest Mexcal expert in the region (maybe also the world?) and does tastings at the bar. The food is also amazing and breakfast is different every day. Overall, staying at Punta Caliza is a dream and I don't have a single complaint about my time there!
This hotel is SO dreamy. Firstly, the hotel itself is gorgeous. The walk out pool is ideal for rolling out of bed in the morning (and for swimming over to the restaurant for a delicious Mexican breakfast). Second, the portion of the beach that the hotel has reserved is also the perfect spot. The staff are also awesome - super friendly and helpful, and they make the best mezcal margs. We've told all our friends about this hotel and we can't wait to return ourselves!
We had the most wonderful stay at Punta Caliza. We loved everything about this hotel (yes, the lighting for reading at night could be better and the wifi was off and on but.......) It was artistically and esthetically so beautiful. It was peaceful and we loved just hanging out by the pool and eating in the outdoor dining area. The food was DIVINE...to be served such unique and delicious breakfasts and dinners was just icing on the cake. The chef creates not only tasty healthy meals but beautifully presented as well. And as though all of this was not enough, I could write a book on the lovely staff at Punta Caliza. We felt so embraced and cared for as though we were part of the family. It is hard to put into words. The staff was all kind and helpful but also seemed to honestly engage in a relationship with us. I know we were just one of many guests who go through and many must feel this way but we shed a tear as we left this island paradise. We will always fondly remember our time there and I could not recommend this hotel more highly. PS...LOVED it that the whole hotel is non smoking!!!
