We live the large communal areas so you can chill without being cooped up in your room. There is even a little garden. The staff are so nice, the breakfast is great and there are great mountain views. It isn’t super modern but it is clean. The WiFi didn’t reach our room or floor but the laundry, shower and everything else was good.

We stayed here for a few days while hiking in Huaraz. Rooms were nice and comfortable and very affordable. Hot water showers were great and room was warm at night (it gets cold at night in the altitude). Staff were friendly and patient with our basic Spanish! Breakfast was fine, standard eggs and bread but the fresh orange juice was very nice! Wifi better further downstairs. Nice location. Not much of a social vibe here but you can meet people on the day trips!

We arrived in Huaraz with the night bus from Lima, and arrived early in the morning. We walked to the hotel (a cab would be about 1 USD). The room was ready, so we could check in right away. It seems like there is a coupling running the place. Both are very nice, but the man speaks very little English. The woman speaks English nicely. The breakfast is simple, but nice. Bread, cheese, ham and jam. Also the woman who works there makes eggs upon request. We did several trips in Huaraz, lasting more than a day, so we lived in El Jacal Backpacker three different times (and three different rooms). The second time we checked in, we had booked a room with a private bathroom. It turned out that the ceiling in the bathroom was covered with mold. We said it to the people in the reception, and we got a new room immediately. Not sure why they don't fix it though. Besides that, all three rooms were clean, but pretty old standards. Fairly minimalistic. Also there is a kitchen which you are free to use, which includes gas stove, cutlery, plates, glasses etc. There is also a fridge. We stored our luggage there for several days while we were away. The room where you store luggage is not locked and people are not always in the reception. We used strips on our backpacks to make sure no one took anything. Nothing was stolen, but just make sure you don't leave anything too valuable, as many people can access the room. The last days, there was a rooster which was completely crazy, so it started waking everyone up around 4 AM, and kept going all day. A room closer to the road is better, to avoid some of the sound.

Very close to Cruz del Sur bus station (approx 10 min easy walk). The town is higher altitude being in the mountains so for some with heavy gear, the walk might not be as easy if you've never been high altitude before. However, unlike Cusco, there's not as many uphill climbs and stairs to contend with. The hostel staff are friendly, but some don't speak English very well. RIcardo made some helpful recommendations for day trips, thank you! The evening staff lady asked me to return my key to the room to give it to 2 other guests which had just arrived... which I thought was strange, but this was resolved when another key was found. It also made me concerned when I had to check out at 5AM and there was no one to check out with, but I was wondering if they had enough keys for the next guests. The front desk is not 24 hours, so you will need a key if you plan on returning after hours. Sounds carry throughout the hostel, so be sure to bring ear buds. Breakfast is simple with eggs made to order, bread, juice and coffee similar to other establishments. There is a kitchen with a gas stove that may be used as well, which is nice. The left luggage room isn't attended or locked always, so bear that in mind if you're leaving some things behind. There wasn't a locker available in the rooms, unlike other places I stayed at which were similar value. I mention this for travellers who are concerned about their belongings. I didn't have anything lost or missing personally. Overall, good value.

Bom atendimento, bem localizado. Tem quartos comuns e privativos. Vendem passeios também pra quem precisar. Utilizamos o locker e pegamos duchas extra.
