Let's get to the facts: Hana is a very small place and has no large multi national chain hotels within the area. So apart from staying Travaasa Hana which is very expensive, you would need to look at local serviced apartments. We booked this place for 1 night less than 2 weeks before we decided to drive to Hana. Rooms are scarce so it was great to be able to book this at such late notice. We booked it via hotels.com which seems to have last minute rooms available. Otherwise you will need to book via their website or via AirBNB. It was one of the cheapest on offer, and still cost $350 USD for a night. The 1 bedroom apartment is cosy and comfortable, and has the view of the ocean. It has a sofabed at the lounge room so we can fit 4 people there. Whilst it is not new and is a bit dated, it is well maintained. There are no air conditioning but they claimed that due to the localised weather this is not needed. We agreed with them when we stayed there, and just leave the window slightly open. Everything else seems to work well and we are happy with it. I think this place is great for an extended stay at Hana, given the limited options, and will stay there again if we come back to Hana.
If you are looking for a more laid back, homey kind of atmosphere, Hana Kai is a great place to stay !! We had the Popolani2 room which is on the 2nd floor. It has a covered lanai with a fantastic ocean view and was only about 300 feet away from the beach. You can sit on your lanai with a fresh cup of coffee and watch the sun rise. The room is spacious and has all the accommodations for fixing a meal in the kitchen or use also the grill outside - so you can enjoy spending time away from the public. (The hotel sent us a note to advise us that the Hana grocery mart doesn't have always have a good food selection - and can be expensive, so we thought ahead and brought food with us from the city). There are places to eat in the Hana area if you want to go out also. The king size bed was incredibly comfortable (this is important after a long day driving to Hana or spent in the Haleakala State Park). The staff was welcoming and friendly. The grounds were well kept with koi ponds along the side of the rooms. Although there is the ocean breeze that comes through the large glass sliding doors, it was still a bit warm and humid at night (but that would be expected in the tropics), and there is no air conditioning (we are used to the luxuries), although they do also provide a fan. Hana Kai is a hidden gem of a place to stay - it's quiet and peaceful. I almost hate to give such a good review as it may be more sought after and get harder to make reservations. Mahalo, Hana Kai.
My wife and I took a couple of extra days of alone time after a family vacation and drove the road to Hana. We spent two nights at the Hana Kai hotel. It was the perfect place to relax after a long day of driving and hiking. We spent the day between the two nights hiking the seven pools and the red beach, both were great. The staff was great. The room was really nice. I took some great photos of the moonrise from our deck. I'd happily stay here again if I was back in Hana. The only thing I'd point out is that you do have to drive if you want to eat anything because there wasn't any food within walking distance of the hotel.
We were so surprised by this lovely hotel. Our suite had a large covered patio, a wonderful bed, fresh flowers, and great coffee. But the very best of all is the amazing location right on a very private black sand beach. You can walk quite a distance and never see anyone. Lovely!!! The staff is friendly and accommodating. Ask to stay in Suite 1. It is the best!
Views are quite nice. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Rooms do not have any air conditioning but there is a nice ocean breeze that comes in. The walls are somewhat thin so definitely conduct sound (hopefully, your neighbors will be quiet). Room prices are quite expensive but is one of the cheaper options in Hana.
Beautiful location and nice ocean view. Great customer service and good location. The environment is very clean and nice to walk around, especially walking to the beach, restaurants, event center and swimming pool
this property is older but nice location. the office staff are nice. it's on the water. there are only two places to eat/regular restaurants in hana. resort and another restaurant. both very expensive so it's nice to have a kitchen.
We stayed here as we were driving the Hana highway. The other main hotel in Hana was far too expensive, so we choose this place and loved it. We had 3 people stay here from our family, there was one bedroom with a large bed and the couch pulled out into a bed. There was a nice kitchen and large patio to relax on. The view of all rooms was the black sand/rock beach. There were fans in each room to keep it cool. There was no tv and the WiFi wasn’t that great. There were also loud neighbors that stayed upstairs from us and the floors/ceiling didn’t buffer the sound, but otherwise this place was perfect.
We had an absolutely perfect relaxing weekend! We upgraded to the ocean view and ate four out of our six meals on the lanai. Very quiet and peaceful. The bay was beautiful, a bit too rough to swim when we were there however we enjoyed the sun. We bought trash bags and picked up trash along the shoreline as a way to give back. One of our very best weekends ever!
Its a great location right on a black sand beach. The Hana Kai Maui is located closed to dinning options. Close to the attractions of the seven pools, black sand beach, red sand beach, Hana Bay. We can't wait to come back.
