Macdonald Botley Park Hotel & Spa4.0 out of 5.0

I travel to Southampton every month on business and this time my usual hotel was booked. This hotel looked great on the website, however looks can deceive. Booked a Feature King Room, should have been called a Feature 2 single beds pushed together room! it also promised great views of the grounds, as you will see by the photo.....not so great! Avoid room 401. Food in the sports bar was terrible, to the point of handing it back. Hotel has potential however needs to be modernised and the staff trained in how to communicate with customers. Spa looked very nice however no time to use it, and parking is plentiful. Wi Fi is great, however no phone signal on O2 in the room. Ok for a night, would not want to stay longer
Shocked by my stay here. There is great wifi, but no mobile reception. No interactive tv, our tv didnt work. The "king size bed" is two singles joined together with two seperate single blankets, the towels stank! Had to move rooms! Stains on the headboards! I cant get over how bad this place was for £100 a night!
Checked in and had to repeat my name four times as receptionist kept calling me by another name! Hotel decor bland, boring and sterile. Bar was like a doctors waiting room and restaurant lay out like a cafeteria. Had to wait on several occasions for a member of staff to come to the bar to serve as they seem to go missing for long periods. Rooms perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable beds. We did not use the spa so unable to comment. This is not a four star hotel.
We had an executive room which was very spacious, a fruit bowl, water, robe and slippers which was all very nice. The bathroom was very spacious too but needed a little attention (grout in the shower discoloured). The hotel doesn't have the wow factor and make sure you know where it is before booking as it is a little remote but is very pleasant and we found al the members of staff very helpful. Its a shame the hotel doesn't have some gardens to walk round with it being in the countryside. There is an area to sit outside the sports bar but no gardens as such just a piece of grass. (There appears to be a housing estate being built right at the back of the hotel.) The breakfast was efficient with plenty of choice. We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening, neither the restaurant or sports bar menu had anything on them which we fancied. We didn't use the pool or leisure facilities. Overall a clean, pleasant hotel.
Really nice hotel . Staff were really good but understaffed so they were really busy . The food was lovely if a bit over priced . Breakfast wasnt bad but ive definitely had better . The Bay Marie didnt work very efficient so the food was only warm not hot . The rooms are very nice with an enormous bathroom with a separate shower . Liked having fresh fruit and bottled water in the room . Overall was very nice and easily accessible to Southampton .
Room was ok comfy bed all amenities ok! Problem with lack of bar staff and bar drinks also when asking for butter at breakfast it was like we had asked for the moon. Everything seemed too much trouble
Where do I start! If you want a pre cruise hotel do NOT stay here. Before my stay I emailed the hotel asking for a quiet room. I arrived and was given the room next to the service door which was banging about every 5 minutes. Don't bother complaining at reception as they won't help you and are not interested. He offered me a room next to the stair well. (So I ask for a quiet room and get the choice of noise or noisier) On checkout I received a bill under my door. I asked the member of staff behind reception for a receipt. She looked at me like I was stupid and said no I can't have one. I've never been to a hotel where I recieve a bill and can't have a receipt. BREAKFAST SHOCKING Luke warm water for Tea Toast like cardboard (not sure what they had done to it) The one thing that concerned me fully was that the fruit and yoghurt was not kept under regulated temperatures. Not once while I sat there was temprature checked on the yoghurt while it was left out in warm air. To sum it up I am not sure if it's the Macdonald chain that is poor or just this hotel. Feel I need to drop the chain an email to explain how poorly run this hotel is.
Room was comfortable. Nothing to complain about really but it was average in every other respect. Food was just about okay. Whole place looks and feels like a refresh would work wonders, it's not bad but it is starting to look a little threadbare (literally and figuratively) in places. In summary, as a bed for the night it was fine. Don't set your expectations high and you won't be disappointed.
We stayed here one night for our anniversary and over all it was pleasant. Pros: Nice, clean, comfy room with coffee machine, fruit bowl and water on arrival with robes and slippers Majority of staff were really nice and helpful Spa treatments were done really well Cons: The food in the restaurant wasn't the greatest. I ordered pork belly with roasted potatoes and creamy garlic sauce- it arrived as pork belly with mash potato and a red wine gravy with green and yellow peppers on the side???? Considering this cost £21 for one main course this isn't acceptable. Me and my partner also experienced bad stomach pain after eating and we both had the pork. Our dinner, one night stay and 2 treatments came to £350 which is just too expensive for what i received. If there was a cheaper deal maybe we would return but not at that price again. Waste of money
Stayed here for 1 night as part of deal to go Paultons park. After reading reviews was a bit worried. Having stayed at hotel 4 years ago and liked I now had concerns. However these proved unfounded. Had a good stay. All staff really good and friendly. Nice clean room. Only problem in room was the z bed (child's bed) was broken, however phoned up and literally within a couple of minutes and working replacement was provided. Ate in Winchester restaurant and had a nice meal, kids meals are the same in all places in the hotel. Had a nice nights sleep. Breakfast was good, nice selection on buffet from fruit, cereal, pastries to hot breakfast. Check out quick and easy. If go to paultons park again will definitely stay here again.
