I stayed there for 4 nights on a business trip and everything is good at this hotel. It is conveniently located near the grote markt where you can take the bus anywhere. There are also a lot of nice restaurants around. The breakfast is great as usual in Nh hotels. Staff are also nice and friendly.
I am writing this review under the assumption that people who read TripAdvisor might put attention on Internet-availability when choosing a hotel. For me a working WiFi connection in my room is as essential as running hot water (much less essential than a minibar) and a key point I expect from any hotel these days. I have been staying in the NH Groningen Hotel de Ville for a total of five days in May 2017. My room was in the 3rd floor (305 to be precise). Already at the first day I realized that the WiFi connection in my room had very weak strength. I would like to note that this has been an issue of WiFi coverage and not of free vs. purchased WiFi. The hotel offers both options but the difference is not the download speed, but the amount of data one is allowed to download. Without working connection this becomes irrelevant. I then complained at the hotel staff and after some back and forth they told me that their equipment is old, that they are aware of the problem and that there is nothing they can do. I talked to many people during my stay (since I had to spend a lot of time in the lobby where the Internet worked) and saw that I was not alone with my problem. WiFi seems to be absent on the entire 3rd floor, weak on the 2nd floor and somehow working on the 1st floor. Since the issue was severe, did not improve in any way over the 5 days and seems to be widespread in the hotel, I cannot recommend NH Groningen Hotel de Ville to anyone. I do not plan to return to NH Groningen Hotel de Ville again. The other hotel facilities are fine (but not exceptional) and there is really no reason whatsoever to stay at the NH Groningen Hotel de Ville in my view.
The hotel occupies an old building and is centrally situated, a few minutes walk from the Grote Markt and the Martinikerk. Nice to hear the carillon playing regularly throughout the day! The public areas of the hotel have been tastefully decorated and modernised. My room however seemed a bit dated, although it was clean and there was more space to put stuff than in some other hotels I have stayed at. There is a secluded courtyard at the back of the hotel and a very comfortable lounge with a bar - the bar is not permanently staffed though so not easy to get a drink especially when the reception staff are so busy. Overall though service is very good and staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast is excellent, fresh, well-prepared and plenty of variety. The Bistro 't Gerecht is well worth a visit - fine dining and good value. The manager also works very hard to make sure all the customers get first class service even when the restaurant is very busy. Not a luxurious hotel but very comfortable and good value for money. I would stay here again.
Great location, nice rooms, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed, cozy breakfast area and Nespresso coffee at the reception - I can recommend, at least for a few-nights business trip definitely!
Hotel is in a great location in the city centre. Staff was friendly. I booked a non-smoking room but the room I got had recently been smoked in. They changed rooms straight away so that was solved but general impression is that the interior of the rooms and hallways feels somewhat dated and worn.
The building is old nestled along a row of homes and businesses. Location is prime to all the city has to offer. The locals are college students / college community and tall beautiful people. The church tower bells ring all day every 15 minutes till midnight. It's a mostly cash only town in the small businesses and restaurants. The hotel rooms are small yet cozy. A set of twin beds pushed together make up a king. No air conditioning however the doors open for cool air. Views are of the courtyard or other buildings. In room: Large screen TV Hot Pot with tea and coffee Small Fridge with beer and snacks for purchase Modern Rain Shower Desk with Chair Small Nightstand Chair Wardrobe Closet with Safe Full Mirror
The staff and the hotel are great! But something bad happened, and I slept not good. In the pillow there is a zipper.. With two very sharp triangle. I fully scratched my arm, and because of this I woke up a few time. I told the staff downstairs the next morning to take out the pillow-sheets with zipper.. It is now 10 days ago and I can still feel the scratched.
The location of this hotel is very good. There're various attractive sites near the hotel. Groningen university, restaurants, grocery market, beer bar, etc. I enjoyed drinking tasty beer in the evening and walking around the city center in the morning. If I had a chance, I'd visit Groningen again.
The Hotel is place in the middle of the city and you can reach everything by foot. The roms are nice and clean as well as the service is excellent. Especially the vallet parking is very convenient and efficiently organised by the hotel staff.
My daughter is at the University of Groningen and this is a lovely hotel around which to base a trip to see her. Good rooms and breakfast, good Wifi, excellent location and friendly staff. It is a great place to stay in a wonderful city.
