The Michigan city of Grand Rapids is a haven for unusual activities and exciting things to do. If you are staying at one of the boutique hotels in the city, you will have the perfect base to start off your adventures. Relish in the city’s unique culture while enjoying nearby beaches and fantastic hikes in the country’s Great Lakes region.

Unique things to do in Grand Rapids (MI)

After you have explored Grand Rapids’ history through the Grand Rapids Public Museum and the Grand Rapids Art Museum, there are plenty more contemporary attractions in the city to enjoy. For example, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts is an innovative enterprise with amazing galleries. It is filled with outstanding work from local and international artists.

If you are after somewhat wackier attractions, check out the Fish Ladder Park, a sculpture which helps migrating fish travel upstream, or the Tanglefoot Building. The latter is an interesting edifice where most of the world’s flypaper was made. Next, the Lixenberg Sculpture commemorates the city as the first to fluoridate its water supply, and La Grande Vitesse sculpture, which translates to ‘the great swiftness’, serves no real purpose but is fun to photograph nonetheless.

Once you have had your slice of the Grand Rapids culture, check out the Fulton Street Farmers Market, the oldest and largest in the city. Alternatively, you could take a ride on the Great Lakes Pub Cruiser, a fifteen-person cycling vehicle, which stops off at some of the city’s popular pubs and restaurants.

You will especially love the Grand Rapids dining scene, which has restaurants to suit every palate. Favorites are Electric Cheetah, which makes food from only local, natural, and organic ingredients and offers over 40 craft root beers, and Stella’s Lounge, well known for their world-class burgers. Once you are fed, head to Billy’s Lounge for one of its famous themed nights or live music.
