My husband stayed here and it was a good thing it was not a family trip. He was extremely perplexed as to why a non-smoking Hotel would have four ashtrays in his room. Yes, FOUR ASHTRAYS in a NON-smoking room! He said the room smelled like stale smoke as well. Being the parents of an asthmatic child this would have been a serious problem. We would not have been able to stay there with our daughter; we would have had to have found new accommodations. A non-smoking room should be non-smoking all the time, not just when nobody is smoking.
After searching on the coast and finding hotels averaging $250 per night, we drove into Watsonville and could not find private non-label hotels. We drove east to Gilroy. The drive east to Gilroy over the mountain is scenic with redwood groves along the way. King's rest was $122 with tax for the night. It is a roadway motel. It is the basics. Wifi is available. Better signal than most hotels. From room 107, I was able to stream Amazon and Netflix.
The room was clean and was ok for a very short overnight stay. But if you want to wash your hair bring your own shampoo - the only amenity was a small bar of soap. The sheets were soft and I was able to sleep well.
The King's Rest Motel is an older place, located on CA 152 west, downtown. The overall appearance of this motel is spotless: each room is very clean, from the carpets and windows to the bathrooms, which is a plus for me. The prices are right. I don't know how Gilroy got the memo that it was okay to charge $100-130 per night for simple, chain motel rooms, i.e., M6, Super 8 etc, but they can and do, so this makes the King's Rest an especially attractive place to stay for an evening, or more. $79 plus tax buys you a simple, clean place to lay your head! A couple of bonuses: BBQ 152 is one block up from the King's Rest, and there is a pancake place right next store. And of course, you are directly on CA 152 West, so you are pointed toward Montery, CA and the Pacific Ocean. A great, clean room and excellent BBQ a few feet away? The King's Rest is a no-brainer. Give 'em a try, I doubt you will be disappointed.
Arriving in Gilroy for the Annual Garlic Festival we were surprised to find a room at all but this was actually nice. It reminds me of the motels of the past and I liked it. Everything in the room was clean and the smell fresh. Flat Screen TV's and good picture, Mini Fridge
Room was nice and clean. Easy check in, parking was fine. Location is good in that it's right off the highway and near food. Bad in that there is noise from traffic and trains in the area. Room had a TV and mini fridge. AC worked but I couldn't get fan to stay on, which would have been nice since there was so much noise from other occupants. Noise level was horrible. I woke up many times through the night. Neighbors still loud at 3am. Paper thin walls. I recommend someplace else if you want a good night sleep. If you just want a room this is fine.
Not thrilled at all about my stay here. We booked the room on the internet. Arrived late at night after a 4+ hr drive. Was overcharged and assigned a room with 2 double beds even though the booking was for a queen bed. Room was cramped and smelled of a funny air freshener. One of the chairs in the room was soiled. Beds were uncomfortable (soft and lumpy). Toilet stall was cramped and toilet squealed loudly when flushed. Curtains didn't draw all the way so passersby could see in. Lighting was too bright as well. No breakfast/coffee as part of the deal AND if you wanted ice from the machine, you had to deposit a quarter. And internet had connectivity issues in my first room that was farther away from the office. It was better the second night. Of course, if they didn't have a 48-hr non-cancellation policy, I wouldn't have been there the second night. I was able to get a refund on the overcharge the next day and moved into a slightly more spacious queen bed room. I think there are many more options in the area for hotels that are cleaner and offer you more for around the same price. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere.
We had tickets to a performance. Looking for something decent, to spend one night after dancing, and just out for the night. This is one of those lil old single story long wing units .... the drive way to the corridor was as neat as a pin, we were greeted by a grounds person with a "Long time no see my friend!" a huge smile and (thought he must have us confused) nope everyone is his friend.... great welcome, the rooms also were clean!!!! and was amazed on how this lil motel had the luck to have its current owners whom take pride in keeping it up. $69. a night, less than a mile to Downtown, only thing the room didn't have was an alarm clock! other than that, the bare basics .... but if your going to go shop or out for the night this is all you need. Taxi service available upon request, front desk helpful.
