Room was nice, very basic and a bit aged but it had everything we needed. Location was very good and only a short walk to everywhere we wanted to go. It was the Christmas period so Galway itself was quite lively, with that so were many guests. The hotel does not contain noise very well. You can hear footsteps and people walking around on the floor above you quite easily and made it quite hard to fall asleep. On one of the nights we were woken up at 3:30am by some man/men trying to get into our room a few times. This was quite unsettling and made us feel unsafe. We notified staff the next morning and were thanked for informing them but heard nothing else. It was quite disappointing. On the day of checkout when asked about our stay we told them again and they looked into it but said as it was just drunk guests there was nothing they could do. We also had someone on our floor 2 doors down from us smoking and playing music very loudly until around midnight. The hotel was very clean and well kept, the free parking was a great bonus. However the noise that carried through the hotel and our unfortunate incident would deter me from returning.

Reception staff were the best part of our stay — very friendly and helpful. The car park is tiny, hard to find, and cars often need to be moved, which increases the risk of damage (nothing happened to ours, but it felt stressful). Our room was spacious and warm but dated, with worn towels, and the hotel overall could use modernisation. Checkout was slow and awkward: we were asked again for card details for snacks/minibar despite not using anything, and we had to wait while they checked the room. The lift also stopped working one morning, which was inconvenient from the third floor

We stayed here one night, and were very pleased that we were able to check in a little early after a redeye flight. I had mentioned upon booking that we were celebrating something and the hotel staff had left a special treat for us and a handwritten note on the table in our room. The location is unbeatable, the price is fair, and the charm of staying in a hotel as old as this one can't be beat. I would recommend this to others and I would stay here again.

The Western Hotel is located in the heart of Galway – an easy 5-10 minute walk to downtown and Eyre Square. Despite on-going renovations, the front staff were wonderful and got us checked into our room. The rooms were large by Irish standards and were ideal for several days. We loved the time and can’t wait to come-back.
