The free Wifi didn't work more than it worked. There was a table with no chairs. The bathroom was SO cold that we had to put on a pair of shoes or socks to walk on the tile floor. Noone on site for assistance. Received a number from the person driving the ghost bus and while the person called us back/texted back she was clearly irritated with our requests: our room had not been serviced by our return at 4pm on Saturday to which she stated "this isn't a B&B..." and told us we were on our own (though the description states daily housekeeping - and NO you don't get breakfast - or any food/snack service on site); asked for more towels to which her reply was she left us six-that should have gotten us through the weekend; and we had two coffee cups in the room which were used that morning. If I wanted to make my own bed and wash my own dishes, I wouldn't pay to stay at a "B&B." She did offer us to leave, which we did. She did offer us a refund for the second night, which was thoughtful. Had this been done, we probably would have just sucked it up. However, after a week, still no refund. She was unresponsive to husband's attempt to contact, so we went through Travelosity to get them involved. Received room only, not including the taxes charged to us. Room was pointed out by friend searching that we had been charged a higher rate per night than what was on the website. All around the worst experience we have had in a long, long time - and it was supposed to be a birthday celebration - instead a birthday I won't forget for a disastrous experience.
The information on Trip Advisor made it seem like the Ryan Mansion was a bed and breakfast. It is not. Many of pictures posted on Trip Advisor are old when the mansion was a B&B.There is no breakfast, only black coffee in your room. You do not have the option to stay in the Ryan Mansion. This is a cottage behind the mansion. You do not get to tour the Ryan Mansion as part of your stay unless you pay for the Ghost Tour separately. I wish I would have known all of these things before I booked my stay. The cottage was nice, but I expected more for the money.
Just to clarify this is a tour of the mansion not a ghost tour as the person at Ramada Inn told us incorrectly, but we just wanted to see the mansion & not do a ghost tour anyway. This is a nice tour of the mansion & it is being preserved to the time period which is nice to see, unlike the Belvedere mansion which is filled with junk that has nothing to with that home. The ballroom is currently under restoration for future use. The young gal that did our tour was very pleasant & knowledgeable about the mansion & the Ryan family who built the home. I like that she pointed out some of the architectural details that were unique & custom to that home. Although we weren't able to go up to the top lookout room I hope that would be open in the future.
Visited as part of Amelia's Ghost Tour. Toured the downstairs which is quite lovely. We were told the folks that own the home were hosting a dinner in the downstairs dining rooms later that evening.. I don't know if it is normal but the tables were set for dinner and the chandeliers were lit which gave an interesting vibe to the home.
I showed up at the Ryan Mansion tour one afternoon with my mom, sister, and mother in law. We love old houses and were in town so thought we would take a gander. The man who greeted us was dressed up in period clothing and asked us who we were there to see and if we had calling cards, etc. I know he was trying to be in "character", but none of us knew what to say to him and it just made things awkward. He gave us a quick tour through of a couple rooms and then we were met by a young lady (also dressed in period clothing). She actually made us all very comfortable and spoke to us like we were in the 21st century, which was nice. The tour was good, educational, and we were able to go at our own pace. The house is beautiful, but it is nothing to write home about (especially for the price of the tour). I was disappointed that we didn't get to see the grand ballroom. Overall, it was just okay.
Indeed there be many fine B&Bs available to travelers of the Galena area. Self described as "Galena's Finest....", I excitedly found this description understated. The Ryan Mansion experience is one of pure Victorian Elegance!! Regardless of which room accommodation you choose, elegance, warmth, a peaceful rest and a Delightful Breakfast is Yours! The Heiken Family proprietors and staff, from True Loving Hearts- share their home, and generous ways of life. My stay, I gladly found to be much more than as a "guest". Be assured, that with a stay or tour at the Ryan Mansion, your are warmly received and treated as genuine Ryan Family. I urge You to join the Ryan Mansion Family too, over night and/or take the tour, upon your every Galena experience! Mark E. Galesburg IL
This was a fall get-away planned as special treat for my mom and sister. We wanted to go somewhere out of the ordinary and make some lasting memories. Ryan Mansion exceeded our expectations without breaking the bank. By choosing to go mid-week, there is a cost reduction. There is no break for single occupancy of a double room, however. The furnishings were exquisite! We stayed in James' room and the ladies stayed in Cecilia's room, which they loved. The electric insert in the room's fireplace made it very cozy. We found the hospitality to be exceptional. We were able to check in early and leave our bags at the mansion in the late morning while exploring Galena. We were given a short tour of part of the house then and a lengthier tour with full history by a costumed "butler" and "housekeeper" the following morning. Brandy was available for sampling in the evening in the library. The Wifi worked fine. Breakfast was not stingy with juice, coffee, fresh fruit and a delicious stuffed french toast. All four of us were satisfied. The only minus: the location is not on GPS; better to call and get specific instructions. It is not hard to find, once you know where you are going! For anyone looking for unique, historical lodgings in Galena--we highly recommend Ryan Mansion.
I have know idea why Ryan Mansion is not rated in the top 5 b&b's in Galena. It is absolutely beautiful. The mansion is decorated like it may have been when built in the 1800's. Every room is like stepping back in time. The owner even gives tours. And a wonderful home made breakfast is served every morning in the main dining room on different fine china each day. If your looking for a great place to stay that is beautiful and quiet you can't go wrong by staying here.
We recently stayed at the lovely and historical Ryan Mansion, (a short drive to downtown Galena), for several nights and enjoyed it immensely. Our host, Bill, was gracious and very informative, providing us with a tour of their beautiful B & B, all while in ‘period mode’. It even included a brief parlour game which was delightful. Our rooms were spacious, comfortable and beautifully appointed and their sheets most definitely were some of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in. Each breakfast was delicious and displayed nicely. The grounds in the back of the home are vast, pretty, and include a large pond, which makes for a lovely stroll. Clearly Bill and Wendy have gone to great effort to provide an exquisite and historical setting for their guests. I would also add that we have stayed in many, many B & B’s over the years and can state that this is definitely equal to the nicest B & B’s we’ve stayed at, and I would recommend it to anyone.
We stayed at the Ryan mansion for three nights. Our room was very comfortable. The breakfasts where amazing. The house is filled with interesting historic decor. The location is a quick drive to downtown Galena. Be sure and take a tour of the house.
