My family and I were in New Zealand for 12 days and drove from Auckland to Queenstown. Along the way, we stayed in a different hotel or Airbnb every night. I can say definitively that Fiordland National Park Lodge was our favorite place. The rooms, while not particularly modern, have a real charm about them. They are spacious, have great amenities (like a small kitchen, porch, etc), and comfortable beds. We also had a view of the lake at sunset that was absolutely spectacular. For some reason every other place we stayed had very hard beds and either no air conditioning or no screens on the windows to keep out pests. Fiordland had screens and not one, not two, but three windows through which to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Despite being pretty deep into the countryside, Fiordland has a wonderful cafe and restaurant that served some of the best food we had on the trip, and despite having no cell service Fiordland's wifi was serviceable enough for us to plan our excursion for the following day. I would heartily recommend Fiordland Lodge to anyone traveling to Te Anau, Milford Sound, or anywhere in the surrounding area.

The room that we stayed in had a very strong unpleasant chemical odor and a lot of bugs, some dead, some alive. Maybe the smell was coming from a chemical that the hotel staff was using to try to get rid of the bugs. The room was not very clean overall. There were also some spider webs. We booked two nights but ended up leaving after the first due to the bugs and the smell.

We stayed in backpackers lodge first night, then in the hotel. Backpackers has well equipped kitchen, too-soft beds but clean and not too noisy. Lodge has nicer beds. Power was out all night and no water which was inconvenient but not their fault. Cafe basic & no restaurant nearby. Plan to cook your meals or drive 25 km to Te Anau to eat. NO CELL PHONE SERVICE, SLOW INTERNET WITH 200 MB LIMIT. PLAN AHEAD!

It is great place to stay in good location, the manager Wayne was wonderful and welcoming!
