Understaffed facility. Same couple of people trying run hotel, store, restaurant and bar. Made for hectic check in and dinner.

This rustic hotel was a true disappointment. No elevator, no phone, no WiFi, no hair dryer, no thermostat! The bed was uncomfortable, the pillows were old and uncomfortable and the overall room felt dingy. The hotel staff were unfriendly and made no effort to welcome us. The restaurant was great.

First of all, it's adorable. It's historically dated decor puts me back in time. Very cute! Clean, has the amenities I need. However, no TV in room so keep that in mind if that is important to you. Next best thing is the amazingly delicious food served in the restaurant. There are vegan and non-vegan choices. My service in the evening so okay but my server in the morning was phenomenal.

Although we enjoyed the train atmosphere and the staff, the hotel is really the only business in Essex. You must be prepared to drive to get food, gas, cell service etc. Nothing is nearby.

Trains run all night so don't plan to get a lot of sleep. If a train person it's great.

Slow wifi, small dark rooms. Great digs for wealthy older adults wanting a history lesson

This is an old hotel. The room was small and very uncomfortable. The bathroom vents into the room. The hotel is next to several active railroad tracks. We could not sleep at all. The restaurant was OK.

Great location good service would visit again ezpecially for train aficionados

Overall everything was great, the restaurant is delicious and the staff is very nice, helpful, accommodating and knowledgable of the tourist hotspots. I have one issue I have to mention, when i checked in they told me that my reservation was for the week before (which was the date I made my reservation) Orbitz had my confirmation date correct so someone got it confused. Luckily it all worked out as we flew in from California then drove 4 hours to get there with a 1.5 year old. We didn't get the room we wanted (facing the tracks) but luckily we got a room.

For $280..expected more...food below average..very nice staff everywhere
