It is conveniently close to Metro's Al Gubaiba station and Al Gubaiba bus station. HoweverI have not taken breakfast because I started early in the morning, guests can choose from a breakfast menu in various ways. Thehotel is along Dubai Creek, it is good to take a walk around. However, it is regrettable that there was no window in the room.
This place is all about the location. If you want the modern Dubai 5 stars Spa , this is not for you. If you want to experience the "authentic" Dubai from the past, you will love this place in a pedestrian area. It is very convenient to visit the old part / souks on both sides of the river. They are getting ready for Expo 2020 and the government is currently restoring many old buildings in the area. Midterm this will make this hotel even better, but you may look at construction in the area over the next months. We didn't hear any noise, so it was no issue for us. We were very pleased with all of the staff including the waiters in the adjacent restaurant. Yes, the prices are a little higher than in the local eateries, but where can you sit in the evening on a roof all by yourself watching the boats go by and have some tea and dinner. Any smaller issues like internet down or electricity gone were fixed immediately. We spent a week here and loved it.
Despite the fact that we are living in Dubai for many years we booked one night at this guest house. The place is fantastic. The old and genuine Dubai. The Dubai greek is just outside and the whole old Dubai with all it's fantastic charm. Metro station is around the corner. The rooms are big, charming and nice. Yes, it is old but so wonderful. Great and friendly staff. Dinner at the restaurant was lovely. Food is really good. Arabic and some Indian dishes. Everything we have had so far has been good. I use to take guests here when doing the tour of old Dubai. I have never been disappointed with the restaurant. You get a lot for your money here and so much charm.
The hotel is in a great location - approximately 150 meters to the nearest train station (Metro Green Line - Station 24), and immediately outside the front door is Dubai Creek promenade. A short walk away is the Bur Dubai Abra Dock where you can take a traditional dowh (wooden boat) across the river (cost Dh1 per person) to explore the Spice, Gold & Perfume Souks of Deira. There is also an enormous Carrefour Supermarket nearby - extremely handy for stocking up on essential supplies, as well as bottled water and snacks. The rooms are very nicely decorated, but the lighting is very very dull, so don't expect to see clearly (good luck ladies with applying your make-up). Breakfast is adequate. We dined once during the evening and while the taste of the food was lovely, the meals we received were different to what was described on the menu. If a meal is described as being accompanied with salad and chips, that's what should be served - not a couple of shards of carrot on the plate (that's a garnish, not a salad). The quantity of food was also lacking (very small portions for the price). One very frustrating aspect we found during our stay was that Reception was hardly ever manned. The hotel asks that you drop your key at Reception when leaving for your days activities, however each morning we had to search to find a member of staff to leave the key with, and then when returning in the afternoon/early evening, we usually had to search again for a member of staff in order to collect it and gain access to our room. Not a huge issue for us, but some people may find this annoying. We saw guests dropping and collecting keys themselves from the secure holding box. This is a security issue in my opinion! Also, reception is near the hotel's back entrance and if it's unattended it's very easy for someone to wander in from the outdoor public space (locals gather on the grass to enjoy social time) - guests store their bags in reception when checking out early, so that could be a security concern. Overall, we enjoyed our stay - but we don't like the massive manufactured hotels - instead much preferring boutique properties. The staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful.
The waiter here was very friendly and helpful. His English was excellent. The food was very good and we sat and watched the boats depart from the creek. Even had Kunafe for dessert!! It is right by the House of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, which is how we happened to pick this place at random. We were very happy to have found it by mistake. We did not stay in the guest house, just eat at the restaurant.
My wife and I spent 10 days in the UAE and Oman on an independent trip, and Barjeel Guesthouse was our first stop. Barjeel is unique in the sense that it occupies on old merchant house that has been converted into a pleasant hotel in a quiet pedestrians-only part of Dubai. What this means though is that it's hard to compare Barjeel Guesthouse with the thousands of other accommodation options available in Dubai, as hotels in modern buildings will obviously allow more conveniences. Barjeel's rooms open to an interior courtyard (ours was 108) and has small windows, so they tend to be darkish. The old windows are single-pane, so noise travels through easily. The bathrooms are fitted with old copper-like faucets, which some guests may not fancy. Since we specifically chose Barjeel for it's old-day charm, we didn't mind any of this. I must mention though that our room was very noisy, and I suspect the only reason why it didn't bother us was that we were still jetlagged and completely tired and thus slept well. The location of Barjeel is unbeatable. True, taxis can't drive directly up to it, but it is no more than 100-150 meters from the taxi stand. The subway station is about the same distance, as is the Old Souq boat station on the Dubai Creek. We very much liked the restaurant of the hotel. There is pleasant outdoor seating, and the inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated. The menu is extensive, the portions are huge, the dishes are tasty and the prices are quite affordable. Breakfast was perhaps a bit of a let-down at a US$100-a-night establishment. Service was friendly and attentive. I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Barjeel again on a future visit.
Why stay in an anonymous block when you can stay in a lovely moorish style guest house right by the water? A minute's walk to the water taxi station, from there straight over to the gold souk. Lovely courtyard. Safe, clean and service an example for all. Simply superb. Would absolutely stay here on any trip to Dubai.
I was repeatedly disappointed by the Barjeel guesthouse. The first strike was that the airport pickup I had scheduled never showed. Because I was getting in at 2am, and had read the guesthouse was unknown to taxis, I had specifically scheduled an airport pickup. I spent an hour looking for a driver who wasn't there and attempting to make contact with someone at Barjeel. When I finally reached the staff of their sister property, I was given no explanation as to why the driver didn’t show. Nor did they apologize or offer to send a new driver. At this point, I asked to skip my stay (I was only going to be in Dubai for 24 hours anyways) and be refunded. I was told this was not possible as Barjeel routes all transactions through a third party (Agoda). This should be on Barjeel – not the customer. We have no choice but to pay through whatever mechanism they have set up on the website. I took a taxi and arrived at Barjeel’s sister hotel around 4am. The rep who I reached on the phone said not to bother asking the taxi driver to take me to Barjeel – they wouldn’t know where to go. So the taxi dropped me off at their sister property. While the night manager was theoretically helping me transfer to a shuttle to at last go to Barjeel, he stopped to help some young men and their prostitutes who rolled up in their Range Rover. These are not classy establishments, people. I get to Barjeel at last and ask the night manager who I may speak to about getting a refund. He tells me he can’t help me and I’ll have to go back to the sister property. I get to bed at 5 am. In the morning, there is no one at the front desk. I check 5 times. I ask the woman who had prepared breakfast if I can eat outside on the terrace. She tells me no. I insist that I would prefer to eat outside. We go back and forth on this for several minutes and it is awkward. She tells me she doesn’t want to walk upstairs. I proceed to carry up the dishes and food, and bring them back down, so as not to put her out. Once again, Barjeel was unaccommodating at every turn. My shower has no hot water and I am underwhelmed by my experience thus far. However, there is no manager to speak with at Barjeel. I go back to the sister property (about a 15 minute walk away). I proceed to recount the above to 4 people. I was attempting to get an explanation for this unsatisfactory service. I asked for a partial refund to compensate for the unprofessional service at every turn of my stay. Alas, I was told that Barjeel was a “guesthouse” not a “hotel” so what did I expect? Evidently, one is supposed to infer from “guesthouse” that the standards will be lower than even a youth hostel. The biggest issue was the lack of any service and management. Who is in charge of the Barjeel guesthouse? I still don’t know because no one ever took responsibility, or offered a partial refund, for this utterly underwhelming stay.
We stayed at the Barjeel for one night and were delighted with the 2 courtyard rooms... they were spacious, well fitted and very comfortable. We had no problem finding the place as it was next door to our cousin's place of work. Lunch at the restaurant was lovely, great outdoor seating with a lovely view over the old harbour. Not the Dubai that we knew from TV at all... we saw that later!!! Coming back from the Dubai Mall area in the evening was really easy with the metro. Good night's sleep, decent breakfast, (not as good as the lunch), and off to see more of Dubai. When we came back in the evening for our suitcases to return to Abu Dhabi, the hotel manager walked us to a taxi and arranged our drive back! Very handsome service, thank you so much. Staying at the Barjeel and seeing the show at the Burj Khalifa showed us very different sides of Dubai.... both were very worthwhile! Thank you for the hospitality.
When we first arrived our taxi driver didn't know how to get to the hotel. There is no street infront and you must walk with your suitcases to find the hotel. This is the only negative thing, and if you know this it is much easier. The hotel is right by the metro station and so close to the Abra dock. We were easily able to explore even staying there for 24 hours. The reason I give this hotel 5 stars is because of their amazing customer service. We were accommodated with arriving early (at 6am) we had to pay a fee of $37 US. But it was the best money we spent as we had been traveling for almost a month and we were ready to rest. They provided us our room, helped carry our bags, and also accommodated us with a very early morning breakfast on the next day when we departed. They allowed us to have our continental breakfast at 6:30am . We were greeted by Kasim (I believe this to be his name) who was beyond friendly and wanting to help us in any way he could. We ate our breakfast and quickly left to find a taxi. Since the hotel is so far from the street we didn't know how to get a taxi and I went back to the hotel while my partner stayed by the luggage. They sent one of their employees to help us hail a taxi. The customer service didn't stop there. I was on the plane back home, hooked up to wifi when i got an email from them a few hours later that told me they had found my iPad in the room. I didn't realize it fell out of my bag. I told them I would pay for them to ship it back. I ended up speaking with the concierge, Abdul Yaseem, at the Arabian Courtyard hotel as it is their bigger sister hotel, and they were very responsive and gave me good directions so that we could get the iPad shipped back. I received it about a week later, and in perfect condition. Abdul even followed up with an email to make sure I received it. I have never had such amazing service and what a ethical job they did to process cash sent and safely shipped my iPad back. It was more than I could have ever expected. I don't think I can praise them enough. I would 100% stay here again if I have a layover in Dubai again. I hope this review holds some weight because they really went so far beyond what I have received in customer service from any hotel previously in my travels. Thank you to everyone who provided a good stay and got my iPad back home to me. Many many thanks!
