Direct flights from the U.S. are available only on weekends, with transportation into the surrounding city available by taxi. A trip by taxi to the West Bay area, where many of the resorts are located, will cost you about $10. The US dollar is widely accepted throughout the island due to the large number of cruise ships that dock at the island, but change is provided in Honduran lempiras.

The barrier reef located near Roatán is the second largest in the world, smaller only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. While the island contains several resorts that offer a wide variety of attractions for visitors, diving along the reef is a large reason for many of the non-cruise ship travelers coming to the island. The best time to visit is during April and May, before the rainy season, when the weather is hot and sunny with high temperatures in the mid-80s Fahrenheit.
