The easiest way to travel within the country is by plane. Charter services in the country offer regular domestic Belize flights to a number of destinations.
There are no trains at all, and you’ll find public buses crowded and slow-going: buses frequently stop to pick up passengers along the road.
Renting a car is possible – but the minimum age is 25. To travel anywhere off the beaten track, a private car is essential, and many companies offer a car and driver if you’d prefer.
The budget-conscious traveler’s favourite, this small coral island – five miles long by one mile wide – has beautiful beaches and a stunning reef. The Split is a small channel running through the middle of the island: created by Hurricane Hattie it has been enlarged by locals so boats can drift past.
The Blue Hole
On the bucket-list of most divers, this perfectly circular hole in the sea, measures more than 1,000 feet deep and extends 400 feet across. Within lurks a cave system that is home to sponges, barracuda and angel fish.
One of the best Mayan archaeological remains is an hour’s drive from the capital. Lamanai is located within a nature reserve and you can combine a visit here with a boat trip along the New River.
