We stayed here for one night on a stopover in Cairns. We got given room 710- the service was lovely. However, that's as far as our positive experience went . I wish I could give them a great review based solely off the service, however the room was terribly bad; When we got to our room it had mould all over the roof, walls, in the bathroom and also on the armchairs and wall pictures. This hotel is old, run down, unclean and unsafe for people's health! We would NEVER stay here again, it was absolutely DISGUSTING! This hotel needs a serious overhaul on their inroom cleaning services, as they are clearly not up to par.
The bar and pool are have recently been upgraded, however the rooms are tired and old. Staff have advised the hotel rooms will be getting an upgrade once the upgrade for the other Rydges Cairns is completed. Great location, staff very helpful, and the restaurant had an amazing chef.
Not even an attempt to dress mutton up as lamb. Unfortunately I forgot to check Trip Advisor before booking as this is a Rydges - and I have stayed at others in teh chain - so what can go wrong. Lots..... Poor staff at checkin - did have a training sign on her name badge, but if someone is in training don't leave them alone - so that is a management/leadership issue - NOT the staff members. I wasn't told about the pool party on Sunday. Unfortunately my room looked out over the pool and the noise was horrible. Think they count on people being out ALL day - but not if you are in Cairns to work vs being a tourist. I did ask to change rooms (having arrived on Friday) but they weren't able to do, and said I should have been advised on checkin - see above re staff in training. Room: Clean - just. Tired - very. Curtains did not shut properly, everything seemed a little damp and musty. Clean just - but not really the sparkling shine you expect of most hotels. Lighting really dim - which didn't help. TV a nightmare to work and I could go on. Still old keys in the locks - so that gives you an idea of how dated it is. Breakfast: Was included in rate - which was one of the attractions. Was okay - I always got there early when all was out fresh ie 6.30am, and the fresh cooked omlettes were nice. The fruit salad often looked a little 'left' over so I avoided. But again restaurant is tired - so tired it doesn't seem quite clean (but hopefully it was). Hallways etc: Tired tired tired. Carpet stains etc - really dated. Probably not updated since the 90's. Staff: Nice enough - I don't blame the trainee for poor service - that is about supervising trainee staff. Location: Great - close enough to Esplanade and central (without hearing all the cruise ship announcements. Restaurants: Lots close by. Marina on 7 minute walk away. Just overall tired and reminder to check on line review no matter what the chain.
The lifts are slow and the building is pretty old, but the rooms, pool area and bar are fantastic. It is located mid town, so its great for shopping, restaurants, nightlife and local amenities. Its a short walk to the waterfront and the strip, so its pretty much perfect for a holiday or business. For mine you can always stay in and enjoy the hotels food and bar.
After travelling for over twenty-four hours, we arrived on Sunday afternoon for check-in at Rydge's Plaza Cairns. During the check-in process, we were informed that the hotel restaurant was closed that night for a 'pool party', but that we could attend the party if we wanted to. Ahem... We took the lift to the sixth floor, alighted and were greeted by an odour of mould. That odour was present throughout our three night stay. Fortunately, we escaped the odour in our room. After taking 'a breather' in our room,and boiling the jug for tea and coffee, I went to the refrigerator to get milk. I found the door ajar, and the small rectangular carton of milk almost round in shape. My first reaction was that the milk was 'off' and the carton was ready to pop. I checked inside the refrigerator and found that the ice tray was completely iced-over and that a thick lip of ice on the tray's front edge was stopping the refrigerator from closing and sealing properly. Needless to say the refrigerator wasn't cold. On contacting reception, I was told tht the refrigerator issue will have to be attended to by the housekeeper on the following day, and was offered a fresh carton of milk. The milk carton duly arrived, and was in the same condition as the first. On questioning the shape of carton and condition of milk, I learned that all cartons were 'like that'. On hearing that, I was bemused by the shape of four other cartons in a pack held by the hotel representative - they were the shape I expected, and which one sees normally on supermarket shelves. I opted to give the hotel milk a miss, and buy some milk from a shop. The hotel room was clean and beds were comfortable. However, the facility showed its age and begged for some TLC. There were no lounge chairs, no balcony chairs (and neither could there be because the balcony extended less than 50cm from the balcony door). A small, aged writing table was complemented by an even older dining chair, the back of which had been reduced to bare timber from use - and probably having wet towels draped over it. The central air-conditioning was quite noisy and suffered under operation. Temperature control was an issue - the temperature setting seemed to not produce the desired effect. Cold was cold, controlled only by the On-Off button that also needed some enticement to operate. But saddest of all was the bathroom. Typically of late 70s design and fitout, the bathroom ceiling was suspended, framed plasterboard. The white board was stained, and the white frames were extensively rusted. The shower was an 'over the bath' type, adorned by a 'Bates Motel' rayon shower curtain. The tap knobs were, again, of 70s vintage, and not one was affixed securely - all loose and wobbly. Over all, not what one would expect for $164 per night.
We stayed one night at Rydges Plaza Cairns. Rooms and building were extremely dated and in desperate need of a major renovation, however room was clean, didn't smell like the elevator, beds comfortable and clean, bathroom was clean but again very old. View was excellent and great location. Staff were friendly. I feel like we over paid but sometimes that happens when prices change at different times before booking. Buffet breakfast was included in our package, was very average, staff were a little clueless, items weren't fresh, danishs were stale, fruit was going off and juice bar dirty. Not a great variety so if it wasn't included in the package you wouldn't pay the additional fee. Looks like everything in Cairns is dated, so it may actually be the best of a bad bunch.
This hotel is in a great location for accessing the city area of Cairns. The staff were helpful, the rooms spacious and the beds were extremely comfortable. Unfortunately, the place has a musty smell and many of the carpets are faded and stained. The air conditioning was also too cold and adjusting the dial to a warmer setting appeared to make no difference. TV reception was also poor and channels had to be chained one channel up or down at a time. For example, when adding two numbers, only the first number registered. For the price, I was disappointed.
Very dated and run down. Bathroom is disgusting. Worn and stained carpets in the hallways, should be charging 50 pn for that standard. Could do with a clean also. See attached photos. Would not and will not stay again. Looked great in the photos on Agoda. Give it a big miss.
We arrived very early in the morning for an overnight stay before a cruise about a week ago. We were very fortunate to be able to get an early check-in, and we got an upgrade to a junior suite. Yes, the rooms are in need of a bit of cosmetic upgrading, but the bed was extremely comfortable and the staff very friendly. We did have the buffet breakfast downstairs and it was adequate for our needs. I was a bit concerned about the bad reviews and had considered going elsewhere but decided to take a chance. I was not disappointed, especially as i had booked about 6 months ago with a really good price through booking.com . If you want 5 star and are used to 5 star then don't go there. I would stay there again even without an upgrade.
