This is a very nice, well-equipped and conventionally located hotel. The rooms are full suites with a sitting area (with pull out couch), a full kitchen with everything you could need to make meals, ample desk space, and comfortable bed. We were just in town for a night, and we loved the location at 5 Points. It was just about 10 minutes from where we had gone to museums downtown, and there must have been a dozen restaurants, from fast food to elegant, within a couple blocks of the hotel. The 5 Points area is immediately adjacent to the UAB campus and seemed as safe as any city/college neighborhood. (For someone needing proximity to UAB campus or hospital, this would be an excellent choice.) On-site parking was a bit pricey at $25 a night, but it was a secure lot, and it was easier than trying to find a space in the busy neighborhood. The free buffet breakfast was delicious, and the breakfast staff was friendly. The only negative (and it is minor) is that we asked the young woman working the desk after we checked in for an additional pillow and it was never delivered. When we came back after dinner, we had to go down to the desk to ask again. (And then got it right away.) Overall, we highly recommend and would stay again if we have reason to visit Birmingham again.

I was surprised to discover that I had to pay an additional $25 for parking in the gated lot. The attendant who checked me in smiled and said “It was in the fine print.” Parking was unpleasant but we figured it out and I was glad it felt safe. The room was in excellent condition. We have zero issues with the cleanliness. But at 1:30am we were awakened by the fire alarm. We descended 5 flights of stairs and waited on the street of downtown Birmingham in our pajamas for the fire dept. They came about 15 minutes later and after an evaluation told us that there was a malfunction with the alarm and that it was safe to go back inside. There was 1 staff person who was on the phone the entire time. She never acknowledged anyone or offered any assistance or apologies. We climbed back up 5 flights of stairs to our room. Five minutes later the alarm went off again. We left our rooms and wondered if we should take it seriously. It stopped within a few minutes so we decided it was a malfunction again. For one and a half hours the alarm went off about every 5 minutes with a flashing strobe light and a shrill piercing alarm. We had to put a pillow over our head but it was far from restful. The next day when I saw a staff person she may have apologized but clearly made light of the issue and simply said “Oh don’t worry we’re getting it fixed.” Obviously she had no idea what it had been like to try to sleep through that kind of experience. It was miserable.

I do not recommend this hotel for single women traveling alone, or even small groups of women. I would not want my mother to stay there. Although the staff was absolutely terrific and the rooms were recently redone and looked great, the area surrounding the hotel is forbidding, unless you are a New Yorker. If you take a taxi and stay in your room, it's pretty good. But if you drive there and occasionally fetch your car, it does not seem safe. Parking has a fence around it, the the guard arm to enter and leave can be easily walked around. It's sad, really, that Homewood spent so much money making the hotel look great inside. The ceiling fan looked brand new; the walls looked newly painted, with new carpet; the artwork is modern and colorful; the lobby is attractive. So much to like. But the neighborhood is sketchy. Again, if you're accustomed to grungy urban locations, you'll think it's fine. But for travelers accustomed to rural or suburban locations, it may feel edgy.

Pros: Rooms were clean and I loved having the kitchenette available while traveling, especially with kids. We loved the breakfast buffet and the help from the staff with little kids. Cons: Lack of luggage carriers made checking in and checking out a very slow process. Due to the elevators being completely on the other side of the building, carrying bags required a lot of strength that we didn't have with 3 kids in tow. So, having more racks available or easier access to parking would make that an easier overall transition. Also, the pool was a bit of a disappointment. It was very small, which the kids were fine with; however, the temperature was FREEZING. I couldn't let my youngest get in the water cause it was too cold, and I didn't want to swim in that temp, either. So, heating, even a little, would be amazing! Also, workers or guests were smoking pot in the pool room. No cameras around. It was almost unbearable to go in there one morning due to the smell. Lastly, the beds weren't the best. I am not typically picky, but the mattress being so firm, along with deflated pillows, made for a very restless week of sleep. A mattress topper would help a lot. Ideas: a cutting board for the kitchen. When cooking, I didn't know if the counter could be used for cutting or not. Also, printed instructions on how to use the stove top. I had to call maintenance to get mine to turn-on due to not knowing the steps to unlock.

Let me begin by saying that the staff was so friendly, professional and helpful. Saundra, Yasmin and Lolita at the front desk and Maria at the buffet area. The hotel was clean. My room was spacious and clean. And my omelet at breakfast was really good. I would definitely stay again.

2 night stay after Christmas holiday. Lovely hotel. Very clean and well kept by staff. Breakfast was very good, lots of choices and good coffee. Coffee and Tea were available 24 hrs in the lobby. There is a grab and go area in the lobby for small purchases (toiletries, snacks, drinks, etc.). The area is VERY walkable and felt safe. A lot of dining options nearby. UAB very close and walkable from the hotel. The room was comfortable and spacious. Would recommend and stay again 10/10.

We were met with smiling faces and authentic kindness every time we entered the lobby. The staff was always helpful and the hotel immaculate. The breakfast was great, with a myriad of options to fit any dietary restrictions. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the temperature in the room consistent. We would definitely stay there again.
