Nice Hostel in a awesome spot. Its close to the beach, has a nice Hostel bar and absolutely lovely staff. The rooms are nice and tidy. Can't complain at all. I really enjoyed my stay there. Can really recommend it!!!
My mom and I stayed in the Pipi Patch in a private room. It was perfect. We had our own little kitchenette with a mini fridge, microwave, and sink. The bed was comfortable and they had a TV which was perfect to wind down to at night. The location is great, and walking distance to everything. The beach, town, anything you need is right there. We would highly recommend to stay here. Staff were excellent and they even had a little orange hostel kitty to greet you on arrival :)
Had an awesome stay at Base, rooms were clean and had everything I needed. Great social areas, cool as bar for backpackers, cheap bbq every night and beer pong what else could you want! Checked in by Nathan who sorted me out from the start to end of stay, he was really friendly and helpful plus the manager is a legend even though he beat me at beer pong! Guests were super fun as well its easy for solo travellers to make friends as there’s a great chilled atmosphere in all the social areas. Can’t wait to go back again some day soon, would deffo recommend! <3
I booked an 8 bed mixed dorm around 8 pm for just one night. I chose BASE bc it was a name I knew (but had never used), available, and was affordable. I had understood BASE to have a 'party' reputation but figured it would work for me for the night. When I arrived around 11pm the office was closed and so I went to ask the bouncer outside the bar how I can check-in. He was kind and walked me inside where he told a bartender I was a late check-in. The bartender took me to the office and helped me check in. I was really happy with the service considering I had arrived late at night. The situation in my room was unfortunately less than pleasant. There is a no alcolol in the rooms policy (which I'm sure is rarely adhered to), and generally I would turn a blind eye to my roommates doing this...however I arrived to find about a dozen empty bottles on the floor and the room generally a mess with everyone's stuff around. I was disappointed to find only two outlets in the room (there are two in the attached bathroom but they're only for shavers) and also disappointed that there was no hand soap. The bunk beds are made from a metal frame, feel weak and are very squeaky. There was one girl already in the room who was having a quiet night watching a movie on her bed. I went to sleep around 11:30 and woke probably 45 mins later to my roommates arriving back drunk , loud and generally inconsiderate. I understand that hostels are a place for young people and that this situation isn't very uncommon, so I just tried to sleep through. However, after they returned to the room, they decided to go out again. The bouncer who greeted me ended up coming to the room before they managed to go out again and he had gave them a strict warning to clean their bottles up. They then left to go out again and returned loud and drunk again probably 90 mins later. So I was unlucky with the people I was roomed with. At checkout, I shared my in-room experience with the staff and they were gracious to understand my gripe and issued me a partial refund. It felt fair, and I learned an important lesson in kiwi (and probably general) civility - it's not appropriate to pressure anyone for a refund with a bad review (which was ultimately how I, albeit unintentionally, came across). I even lost my credit card at the hostel and when I called them to ask if they had it (after I'd left town) the staff were really helpful to send it to my next destination. Overall I was really impressed with the service - from the bouncer that greeted me, to their willingness to ship my forgotten item. I'd recommend this hostel if you're looking to meet fun, young people. The bar onsite is open late. If you're looking for a quieter night, head across the street to the Moustrap
I've stayed here a couple of times and always had a great time. The staff are incredibly friendly. The rooms are pretty cool too, with nice big bathrooms and had a fridge too, which is super handy. The on-site bar is great with cheap drinks. Never had a problem with it keeping me up at night either. Very short walk to the beach and other useful things (attractions, shops, eats). Would highly recommend. After being in NZ for a year and a half, it was a great way to finish off my time here. Thank you!!
Easy going atmosphere, staff are easy going and friendly will help with anything. The bar on its busy nights are decent. Buzzing and who doesn’t like $5.50 wine in happy hour? Encouraging environment to get involved with whatever is going on. I loved the $12 BBQ would recommend that definitely. Well cooked steak even on mass! Rooms (like cabins with Ensuites for the 8 beds were nice) and bathrooms were clean, crisp white sheets. Always a bonus. If you want a quiet stay in this area, pipi patch probably isn’t the place with music til 1am, but if you want to party chat and have a drink it’s a great place. I’ve moved over the road (wish I hadn’t) and miss it so I’m in the bar from 5 when it opens to get involved and meet new people. Overall top place.
Every time i come to the Bay of islands the Pipi Patch its ALWAYS my first stop! -the bar always has something going on and cheap drinks (make sure to have a pipi bomb to start your night off!) -the dorm rooms dont make your feel too squished like most others I've stayed at plus the have the best pillows and the bathrooms get cleaned every day, and if you win bingo sometimes they upgrade you to a private room for the night and the private rooms are amazing i felt like i was living the luxury life -the staff is soo helpful and Jo Nathan and Steve are just a delight to have a chat with and gave me lots of cool things to do that i never would have though of doing -AND THE LOCATION, you can not beat the 2 min walk to the beach!! All in all i love coming and staying at the Pipi Patch and plan on being back soon!
I would strongly recommend anyone avoiding to stay here!! Rooms/bathrooms are smelly and dirty. Beds are old and noisy - zero comfort. What they call a „spa“ is in fact not a real pool but a dirty hole in the ground and the jacuzzi is filled with brown matter instead of water. I thought about swapping to a double room after i saw how bad the dormrooms are, but those are just as bad, do still have a shared bathroom, and never worth the money. Staff is trying to take as much money as they can get. Never been informed about ridiculously early check-out times (10am) and even though my bag was packed and taken off my bed in a dormroom and new people have not even arrived by 12pm when i came back from a boat trip, 10NZD were taken off me by not returning deposit for a towel i had to rent earlier. I strongly recommend to stay away.
We stayed for 2 nights is a double room with shared bathroom. The room was very dirty and full of dust. The furniture was extremely old and used. One of the windows had it's opening system broken and has held in place by a cloth hanger. Not only the rooms were dirty, but also the common spaces were sticky. Very bad experience!
Great hostel in the heart of Paihia. Privates and dorms both available. Awesome location, extremely friendly staff and very clean. The bar is lively and pretty good value too. Would definitely recommend !
