Good hostel with very comfortable beds, really good location but they can be too expensive at peak times. Nice to have a bar on site, and actually it's not too loud. Nice people working here and friendly atmosphere.
Arrived at Pipi Patch on the Kiwi Experience bus where you’re guaranteed 2 nights stay. We originally wanted to stay a week here but, like other reviewers, we couldn’t. You can book 2 nights max. before having to check out and then check back in again. After doing this a couple of times we were told we had to actually pack all of our luggage from the rooms, move it to the luggage storage and then come back in the afternoon to see if there was any space for us. Even at the initial check-in the tall, dark-haired guy didn’t have much of a clue as to what was going on and his unprofessional mannerisms gave us a poor first impression of how this hostel operated. The facilities listed such as pool, hot tub and WiFi - not sure if this is given as comic value or what. The pool is filthy and unusable as is their hot tub (if it even works) this being in their peak season too. WiFi is incredibly slow making it difficult to do the simplest of things, only available right by reception and turns off after 7pm. However you can pay extra for the all areas 24/7 WiFi which doesn’t work at all. Unfortunately there’s no mention of a hostel cat anywhere which I believe should be highlighted. My girlfriend has extremely bad allergies, as did another guy who was staying there, and they “allow” this cat to roam around the premises, including in the kitchen where most of the equipment and utensils are kept in an open space at floor level. I use the term allow, when really it should be more like “encourage” as the cats food and water bowls are located right next to the kitchen. Luckily neither of them did have any reactions as they kept as well away from it as possible but definitely put them on edge throughout the duration of their stay. It’s a real shame as Pipi patch has the potential to go from being a busy venue to an excellent busy venue in Paihia - location is great and majority of their employees are fun and want you guys to have the best time. Just need to tweak a few things, as mentioned above, until it becomes a place to rave about.
At first you're amazed by the location and the fact that you are closed to the beach, there is even a bar in the hostel. But that's it! The kitchen is always a mess, the common room is so small with only one table to eat inside. I travelled with the Kiwi experience ticket so 2 nights were guarranted but if you want to stay more they can'to offer more that one night at a time, so you have to check out and chek in every day... I just went to the other backpackers acrosse the Street: The Mousetrap and it was the best. So the Pipi Patch is good for max 2 nights and then you'll see what i meant.
Had a great time staying here for 3 nights. Every night there was something going on in the bar, beer pong, bingo and happy hour 8-10! Lost my V there so over all mint stay! Definitely recommend!!!!!!
I stayed in Paihia for 1 night and had a good experience with this hostel. The hostel and the rooms are clean and you get a more homely feel than you do at most Base hostels since this is a smaller, more intimate one. The location is very good and is the pick up point for both the Stray and Kiwi bus as well as the Skydive which they'll also help you book from the reception. Downside, as with every single Base or Nomads hostel I've stayed at, is the wifi. The free wifi only works between 7am-7pm and is very slow, especially if there's a lot of people in the common room. There's also a shortage of outlets in the room, so be sure to be quick if you want to charge your phone over night. Apart from this the hostel is very good and I would stay here again if I were to go back to Paihia.
I was in the bay of islands for 4 nights in total. The location is really good you are a 5 minute walk from the wharf were all the boat tours leave and if the mood strikes it only takes around half an hour to walk to the culture centre if you are lacking transport, the evening entertainment is highly enjoyable and varied playing anything from beer pong to bingo on different nights. I had a great stay my only downside which isn't even them in the 3 hours between me checking out and picking up my bags I realised I hadn't picked up towel the people at the front desk were very helpful asking around about it but it seems like someone pinched it. They have taken my details in case it turns up so all in all a great bunch. 😁
Base in Paihia is located pretty good right in the middle of the City just minutes from Supermarket and the wharf where most tours through the Bay of Islands do start. It offers a pretty decent bar with a different "program" every night (such as Bingo night, Beer Pong night, etc.). It has a common room which gets crowded quickly during the evening and closes at 10pm sharp. Also a downside is that (free) Wifi is available only from 7am to 7pm and then only against payment (6$ a day). The (8-bed) rooms are OK (since they originally were built for 2-3 persons only) but do not offer lockers which is a disadvantage since no one likes to sleep which his valuables wrapped around him/her. Also power outlets are rare and only available in a separate room that once used to be a kitchenette. But if you dont mind and are there for Party and Action only you'll find it ok.
Stayed for 2 nights, was a nice stay and good that the dorm rooms had their own showers and toilets. The facilities are kept in good condition, kitchen is a good size and the seating areas were nice and spacious.
Stayed 3 nights while traveling with Stray. Hot Tub was not even warm. It was about same temp as the tiny pool. No mirror in bathroom. BBQ was good if you like steak. Decent place to hang out with new friends.
The rooms are really good. Ensuite bathroom with toilet and shower and a storeroom with a sink unit. Beds are comfortable, but a bit unstabile. So, if someone goes up onto the top bunk it squeaks. The location is sweet as, only 5 minutes to the centre of Paihia and just 2 minutes to the beach. The reception service is good, no problems occurred. The kitchen is too small for all the people, so in rush hours it gets complicated to make your meal. Moreover this is intensified by the fact that 4 of 8 hot plates are not working. Additional amenities like a whirlpool and a small swimming pool are nice to have, because the water is really cold and if it is not, the water in the sea is warm, too. The drinks at the bar are quite expensive, but the quality is good. Every night is a party till the late hours, but if you close every door and window, you do not hear much. The BBQ, which most of the guests take at their first day, is for 12$ okay. Good variety (meal, salad, potato), but my sausage was cold and you are not allowed to take a second time. All in all, a really good hostel with just a few minor things that could be improved. It is a good value and I recommend it to everyone, who is searching for an accommodation in Paihia.
