We stayed one night in the main house, a huge well decorated bedroom with a large bathroom with double sinks, Jacuzzi bath and double shower. Loved the whole decor and ambiance of the main house. Ate in the restaurant which despite other reviews found to be very good, as well as breakfast. The grounds need a little attention and not much to walk round. We didn't use the spa or the outdoor pool. Excellent service from staff throughout. Why not 5 star..? Needs a little maintenance especially shower and bath also it would have been nice to have dressing gowns/slippers etc. Not a million miles off though and would return again.
Hotel views stunning and very quiet. However staff unhelpful, very limited menu choice, outside swimming pool not working. Air conditioning, extractor fan and tv remote in bedroom didn't work, 2 vases of dead flowers in the room. . .stayed in junior suite so very disappointed. Certainly not a 4 star hotel!
Combe Grove is both a Hotel and Health Club. It is on the outskirts of Bath with breathtaking views over the Monkton Valley. It has had a chequered history of ownership with 3 owners in the last 3 years. The current owners (since March) are the Elmhurst Foundation who have, inter alia, an ethos of “Health and Wellbeing”. My wife and I have had a couple of lunches there in the House Bar within the main Manor House. Combe Grove has been trumpeting its new menu which we found it rather limiting and no draft lager or beer at all (only bottles); we heard someone complain it was warm. We wanted two rounds of sandwiches plus chips. However, no chips were available on the menu at all as it does not follow the healthy ethos. Apparently, this is also the same for breakfast where a full English is not available for the same reasoning. Absolute bonkers!! It should also be noted that the bar and restaurant is shared by both Hotel guest and Health Club members. At times this is uncomfortable when some Club members are in their sports kit/bath robes. There used to be a separate facility (called Eden) in the cellar vaults which was regularly frequented by Club members and included a Sports bar with TV and draft beer. We had many a meal there and would have liked to watch Wimbledon there over a glass of wine, but there is no TV anymore. The Eden has been closed for over year now which is a great shame, but the kitchen is also based there and has to ship food upstairs. Maybe management should open up Eden even temporarily until a new site was found or to see if it worked. It would be lovely to eat there again and I think it would be a real feather in their cap. The main part of Health Club is predominantly opposite the Manor House across the courtyard. It has a changing facilities, a gym, studio, and indoor swimming pool which we used. The changing rooms are spacious but numerous lockers are out of service and have been for some time apparently. The gym is well equipped and has just got some new spin bikes. The indoor pool is of a great size and there are also loungers which have great views. The 2nd sun deck has just been dismantled as it had rotted away but hopefully will be replaced, but all the debris has not been cleared and it looks a mess. There are also 4 separate hydrobeds which are fabulous (when working). Talking to some Club members, there is great frustration that these hydrobeds have been so unreliable and there have been numerous e-mails to the management team about this which have gone unanswered. There is also an outdoor pool which has just been closed due to a faulty filtration system. I was also keen to have a go on the driving range, but this was also temporarily out of action. In summary, Combe Grove has much potential and has great views from a tranquil setting. But it has suffered from chronic underinvestment and staff turnover. It is going to take some time to get this up to the standard it deserves. The menu and bar facilities are poor compared with the old Eden vaults. There are major maintenance issues which the new owners need to grip urgently. At the moment, Combe Grove does not have much competition but it is expensive bearing in mind all the ongoing issues and the strange bar/menu choices.
I enjoyed one night at this beautiful location. Fantastic views over Bath. It was very hot, and we were looking forward to using the pool, but it was too crowded. We were located in a room in the grounds up three flights of stairs, and there was no air condition, just a fan. The room was nice and comfortable. Breakfast was unusual, in that there was no full English available, which would have been nice. The hotel and grounds are lovely, but needs some updating. All in all, a lovely place to stay, but I would say it is overpriced currently.
this is a lovely place in a stunning setting overlooking a fantastic view. The swimming pool has a stunning balcony giving onto the view. But the best thing was the welcome pack for the dog - lovely comfy dog bed, nice bowls, towel and poo bags plus dustbin to dispose of them outside rroom. garden ooms lovely with own terace. lots of green space to trot dog out too. friendly staff. i think they need some more gardeners to estore to former splendou though... :)
What a lovely hotel in the middle of nowhere. If getting away from everything appeals to you, than stay at Combe Grove Hotel. It's a most 5 - 6 minutes outside of Bath town center, but you could be on a deserted island as its so peaceful and set in beautiful gardens. The facilities are wonderful, country club with indoor / outdoor pool, driving range, gym etc, only thing that let's it down is the need for a refurb but this is underway slowly but surely. Breakfasts is a wonderful affair - none of your usual buffet of overcooked english breakfast with cold bacon and burnt sausages, but instead fresh fruit, tea in pots, eggs benedict, honey, gluten free bread, all wonderful. Only criticism, and its not a criticism as such more an observation is try to book a room in either the house itself or on the lower ground floor of the new wing as there are several levels of stairs - rooms though are gorgeous - largest bed I've ever slept in! Will certainly be returning ASAP.
Fantastic room, perfect location, needs a little more upkeep of the grounds. Trees spoil the view but not sure there is much that can be done in that sense! Food is a little boring, people still need/want a decent meal and options when they're away, the choice was a let down as was the portion sizes!
The setting is to die for with superb views in a quiet location very close to Bath University. The suite was great with a fantastic breakfast. Even though we didn't use the many onsite facilities , just to know we had the option was very welcome. I would recommend the hotel for a getaway.
A lovely hotel tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city with the most amazing views. Very relaxing atmosphere. Staff very friendly and attentive. Breakfast and evening meal both delicious. Highly recommend.
Great place for a mini-break, charming staff and excellent food. Care taken to cater for food intolerances among our family party, with delicious outcomes. Shame the outdoor pool was closed for repair as we were there in the heatwave.
