New favorite spot in the OBX
We were supposed to be on a fall break trip with the kids (9 and 5) in the NC mountains. But when Hurricane Helene forced a change of plans, we ended up booking this place at the last minute and made it a beach week instead. Avon is further south than more touristy side of the OBX, and we definitely felt remote. But that was part of the appeal. The house is ideally situated adjacent to Hatteras National Seashore property, with a south-facing view overlooking natural beauty and encompassing the sound and a little bit of the ocean. It's a view we never tired of, especially watching the kite-surfers in the sound. (We didn't realize this spot is legendary for kite surfing, and it was delightful to watch them from the porch.) The house itself is charming, well designed, and clearly beloved by many repeat visitors and families, judging by the guest book entries stretching back to the 1990s. This is not your typical rental, but a special place. We appreciated the artistic tastes of the owners, the tasteful and comfortable furniture, and the upstairs reading nook with its own spectacular views, which our kids took over as an ideal spot to read, draw, and play. There's a soggy path to a small beach on the sound, and the real beach is an easy 10-minute walk in the opposite direction. Our only complaint was the noise of a new house under construction across the road, which started around 8 AM. Nothing the owners can do about that, but just something to know if you're looking for quiet.
