Base Auckland3.5 out of 5.0

A friend in the tourist industry told me that the instruction book for hostel success says: 1. Separate the hostel visitors from the locals. 2. Make a way for hostelers to meet each other over alcohol. 3. Get 'em drunk. 4. Wait for the next day, when they're hung over, and they'll extend their stay. I guess X-base has taken a page (several) from this book. The hostel is huge (500 beds, I hear)... some rooms without windows. Toilet stalls without coat hooks, vending machines that don't work, mattresses where you can feel the springs, no electrical outlets near top bunks... but the bar! Ah, the bar. The beer, songs, friendships, phone numbers, flow like mud in an earthquake. I didn't meet a native there and the crowd is mainly millennials... but everyone is so friendly, so welcoming, so drunk, I didn't care. 7 of my best hours in New Zealand were spent in that 6th floor bar. It's only open until 9:30... but your new friends will tell you where the party continues. There are several bars within staggering distance. The info desk and coffee bars also act as tour booking centers. Allowing you to avoid the locals by trecking, sailing, canooing, and going on a trip to look at the natives with your fellow foreigners. The staff is friendly as they tell you you can't charge your phone there. (They don't want to be liable.) And there are no small bottles of soda. (Though you can run to the convenience store and buy one) And breakfast is free. (If you purchased your accommodations through IEP-- whatever that is.) If not, the unlimited granola will cost you $8. You will have to wait in line to ask a question or check in (same line). My advice: stay here! But take some time and get out of the city center... by yourself. Meet the locals. Then come back and get drunk at the hostel bar.
We had an awesome stay at the hostel. We rented a private room and it was really amazing, super worth the money. They let us store our bags until check in and the staff was super friendly! We planned a two day trip to Rotorua and Matamata and they were incredibly helpful! (Shoutout to TJ)
Reception was nice enough but the whole feeling of the place was a little commercial. There is a large tour desk and also lots of info if someone is on a work visa but for just a solo traveler it didn't have a very friendly feel.
I only spent one night at Base and didn't use the kitchen so cannot comment on that. Stayed in an 8 person dorm on the 3rd floor and the room only had two sockets. In 2017 I don't think it's unreasonable to expect suitable phone charging facilities for each guest, even in low end accommodation. Reading lights would also be nice as there's only one big light in the room. The bunk beds and lockers underneath are metal rather than wood meaning that people rummaging around in their locker at 4am is noisy no matter how hard they try to be quiet. The showers were clean enough, although I wasn't a fan of the saloon doors in a mixed shower room. There was no female only toilet near to the dorms on the 3rd floor and the door to the single unisex toilet was broken and did not close meaning girls had to use the toilets through the reception area. The communal chill out area is pretty grubby and the breakfast area is not fit for purpose. The whole place is shabby, out-dated and in desperate need of a refurb. 2 stars for location, nice staff and because it's pretty cheap. Next time I'd spend a bit more and stay somewhere more functional.
I booked my SUPERIOR double room through Booking.com, at Auckland Xbase, 28 Nov 2017, the room was small with a dirty stained carpets & beddings; broken footstool, fridge was dirty too. The room was unfit for human habitations as no windows no aircon or any form of air circulation. I complained about t to the front desk and they just dismiss my complain Another XBASE at Wellington. DEC 2017 rude staff just barge in our room without knocking (3XTIMES). The room was for 4 people my bunkbed was practically seating on top of the electric heater and constantly noisy. THIS A HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE. The room is really good for 1 bunk bed not 2! Most of the XBase kitchen facilities are digusting! Lack or broken or dirty cooking pots, cutlery, mugs, cups& dishes; for the amount of people staying in this facilities.
The hostel is located directly downtown, right near the Auckland tower, shopping, restaurants and grocery stores. It is also walking distance to the ferry, many bus stops and the metro stop. The reception team are very friendly and helpful. They even upgraded myself and a friend because we are previous guests. However, I really don't like the new process of requiring every person to add the app in order to check in. The only reasoning for this was that it would be a time saver for future check ins on their side. Also, this base seemed understaffed because there was only one guy checking in a line of 8 people. The rooms for 4-8 people are kept quite clean. However, at one point I came to a room and my pillow didn't have a pillowcase on it. The bathrooms are okay, but not the best. The showers are expected for a hostel, but quite spacious. There is minimal counter space but some bathrooms have hair dryers, which is always nice, especially in a hostel. The kitchen is the worst part of the hostel. Everything is dirty, but that is also to do with the guests who stay there. Overall, I think the price matches what you get. It's not the cleanest or nicest hostel but the location makes up for it.
2nd visit (15-18 December 2017), (3* / 5*): Overall experience: It was partially bad but also good because I got what I need at least. This time I got a 4 bed dorm backpackers on Level 6. First 2 nights went well but on 3rd night, there were 2 other guests that had my roommate's key card and came in and play around. It happened after midnight just as I was close to going to bed. It was very disturbing! Staffs: However, the receptionists, especially Letoya, Quin and Cameron were very friendly and helpful. By sorting my 3rd night issue out, they gave me another room (on Level 7) with better people. I managed to sleep well on the 3rd night with different people thanks to the staffs!! Showers: The showers were better this time (it had hanging space, etc.) It needs improvement though!! A curtain is recommended - stops new clothes from getting wet. The sink on Level 7 disabled toilet was partially stuck - basically needs fixing and takes a while to drain. Kitchen: Kitchen was good (it provided enough items for us to use for cooking)!! Storage of items needs to be way more organised!! It is literally all over the place!! Accessibility: Very close to public transport access, nearby shops, and Sky City!! Recommendation: I do not recommend Level 6 rooms - unless if you don't mind noises from the corner roof side bar and outside people being able to access this floor playing around and maybe access your room too (if they have your roommate's key card). (by the way Level 6 is not locked off on the lifts) Advice to other people looking for this place: - Just be very friendly. Try not to start a conversation with someone if they look nasty (lol) although it's still good to be a bit socialising lol. - Be very organised (don't leave your room without key cards and things you need) & (don't leave valuable items in your room - if your staying in shared room). - Always seek receptionists/staffs if you need help. - Appreciate everything they have! Don't complain too much! LOL
We love our 3 nights stay here at Base Auckland. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We love our room and the location was perfect for nearby bus stations and places of interests. Will definitely comeback here if every will have to chance to visit Auckland again.
I stayed here for 2 nights in Nov 17 and would never stay here again. The check in is very unorganised but the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were terrible. Very small, I was in a 4 bed dorm that was too small for a twin room. The hostel actually forms part of a shopping centre (which obviously you can’t get in or out of) so that means there are no windows and no fresh air either. The toilets/showers were not clean and all in all the hostel was not well looked after. Base is a big chain and I’ve stayed in a lot. All they care about is making money. I’ve given a 2 rating purely for location and staff helpfulness.
Worst mattress ever Dirty toilet and shower Good staff but way too many people I just went outside to chill cause inside it wasn't possible ! Too much noise and a pub next to the main door, so if you want too sleep, it's gonna be hard ! If you want too party you gonna like it, but if you are looking for a quiet place it's not here ! It's not very expensive but i'm sure you can find better for cheaper !
