I stayed here for a wedding and had two different rooms. The first room was very dated and dirty. The room key also quit working twice on us. The next room was more updated but the paint on the walls was all scuffed up and coming off. The bathtub had mold on it and the shower head was so old. I honestly wouldn't stay here again. It was not worth the money.
I was prepared for a "period dated room" but not a neglected room. When in baseball a team doesn't perform they fire the manager. In the hotel business, that is the general manager. Wall scuffs, bent towel rods, rust on the heater, cigarette burn marks, wall paper seals coming loose, bathroom wall tiles with mold, rust on bathroom drain, heater had only one functioning temperature, powerful external fluorescent light coming through the drapes are support for my statement. Room size was nice and knew in advance about the dated Zenith TV. Front Desk Staff and Health Club Manager very personable and professional. Free Parking in North Garage, Breakfast included. When they get their act together and maintain rooms, then it would be worth staying here.
This hotel has the small town historic look and feel! You can feel the history! This place is not new and yes the rooms feel old, but that's the charm! Rooms are very clean and bed is comfortable! TV's are not flat screen or LCD but again, old school charm! Loved the shower heads! High pressure and very nice! We've stayed here before and will most likely stay again! My only negative is that I booked the Jacuzzi Suite a few months ago for a birthday weekend get away! When we checked in, there were signs on the elevators to not go to the 5-8 floors. Our room was on the 4th. We got to our room and found it was NOT a Jacuzzi Suite, but an Executive Suite. I went back to the front desk and was told that all Jacuzzi Suites are on the 8th floor and floors 5 thru 8 were being "watched" or renovated (not exactly sure what she told me) and not available. So I was given an Executive Suite at a cheaper price. That was appreciated, but not why I had booked this hotel. I really wished I was informed by email or phone that the room that I had booked would not be available prior to me checking in. So I suggest that you call ahead a day or so in advance to see if what you booked is what you are going to get!
My family stayed at the Retlaw in August. The first thing I noticed was the historical charm in the front lobby. A lot of famous people had stayed there over the years which they proudly display on the walls. We stayed on the 7th floor very close to the "haunted" room. When we entered our room, it smelled like cigarettes, so we went to the lobby to tell them, and immediately someone came up to febreeze the room for us. The room was nice but could use some touching up. The restaurant was pretty good offering a nice selection of meals. The breakfast wasn't bad, I liked the omelette station they had. I really want to give a major compliment to Brenda who is such a hard worker there. She helped us with our room, plus she works in the restaurant and does the banquets. Such a hard worker and very friendly. She talked history with us and let us look around the ballroom before we left. Management should be very proud to have such a hard working dedicated person on their staff! Sometimes you never hear positive comments so I wanted to take the time to recognize her for everything she had done during our stay.
I recently stayed at the Retlaw Plaza Hotel. I believed it used to be a larger chain hotel before Retlaw. It is in the downtown section of Fond du Lac. I did not see any parking garage I parked on the dark street. The bed reminded me of a WWF wrestling platform...HARD. The breakfast in the morning was standard. If I had to pay for the breakfast i'd been upset. The internet was very slow. And this is the first hotel I've seen with a huge tube tv like I had back in 1997. The ice machine only worked on 1 of the 7 floors. Would I stay here again. NO.
This hotel is a charmer- inexpensive accommodations, wonderful meeting/catering options to meet every business need, and above and beyond service excellence provided by each employee I encountered. The location is nicely situated in the downtown. The hotel has been well maintained for its age, and retains some of the old world splendor in the lobby and ballrooms. A real gem!
My Father-in-law and I stayed at the Retlaw Plaza July 20-26 2015. We were there for the annual Oshkosh Airventure fly-in. We stayed on the 7th floor in a nice room. Was very quiet and clean. Breakfast was awesome as they add a few additional items for those staying the week of the fly-in. The front desk clerks were very cordial and helpful. The restaurant in the hotel was a bargain in my opinion. Wednesday night half price pizza MMM. Nice historic hotel with great rates.
Big CLEAN room. Large soft towel Helpful staff. Free Breakfast. The hotel has been remodeled and updated, but still retains that old world charm. It's like the charming hotel you stay in when in Europe and then write home about. I recommend it highly.
The Retlaw needs to be closed down and demolished. The hotel is old and in disrepair. The rooms are seriously the dirtiest I have ever seen. Hair all over bathroom, rusted out toilet. I would of checked out and went to another hotel in the area if I was not there for more than one night and on business. The whole place is a sham for 100 bucks a night! It should be more like a 49 dollar a night! Stay anywhere in FLD besides here!!
I liked the indoor pool, whirlpool and sauna. Open till 11pm most nights. Ref. and microwave in room. I had a large flat screen TV in my 7th floor room. The free breakfast had a waffle iron blue berry or reg batter. There was a chef making omlets the way you want them made with lots of add in ingredents. Place could use some updating.
