If you're ready to visit the most populous city in Central America, fly from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Guatemala City. To get to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), you can drive yourself and keep your car safe in express, short-term or long-term parking. Public transportation to the airport includes Go Yellow Checker Shuttles, the Trinity Railway Express and the Orange Line DART train. Expect the flight to last about three hours.
Walking is unusual in most of Guatemala City, so plan to take taxis or buses. Guatemala's capital features an interesting combination of modern architectural styles, due to the rebuilding that occurred after two 20th century earthquakes, and ancient Mayan and Spanish architecture remains. Some of the popular destinations include the Museo Popol Vuh, the Metropolitan Cathedral and Palacio Nacional. Shopping enthusiasts can peruse the goods at the Oakland Mall or at Mercado Central, the largely open-air market downtown.
You can generally use U.S. dollars to pay for taxis or shuttles to take you from La Aurora International Airport (GUA) into the city, but you'll need Guatemalan Quetzales everywhere else. Temperatures in Guatemala are consistently between 55 and 75 degrees throughout the year. The rainy season typically runs from mid-May to October. Service staff members in certain parts of the city speak English, but most Guatemalans speak only Spanish.
