Taking a vacation doesn't have to involve a long flight, because you can take a trip to a neighboring city. Flights from Anchorage to Dutch Harbor only take a few hours, but the flight opens your eyes to new experiences and activities. Orbitz.com offers flights between these two Alaskan cities at lower prices than you might think.
Anchorage has some amazing views and great outdoor sites, but when you want to get away from the city, you will use the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. After you drive your car into the airport, be on the lookout for parking signs. The long-term lot at the South Terminal offers parking for $10 per day or $65 per week. Make sure that you avoid the short-term lot, which charges $84 per week.
Taxis and buses are available for those who do not have access to a car. Taxi rates start at around $17, and taxis are available through Yellow Cab and Checker Cab. The Municipality of Anchorage People Mover Bus is less expensive, but it only makes stops in specific areas downtown. The airport also offers several dining options for those who need something to eat, including Starbucks, Quiznos, Cinnabon & Yogurtland, McDonald's, and Café Del Mundo.
Some people refer to Dutch Harbor as Unalaska because of its proximity to Unalaska Island. This is a city where travelers go hiking, whale watching, and sport fishing every year. Even if you aren't a fan of outdoor activities, you will still find a few things to keep you occupied.
The Unalaska Airport goes by different names. The official name is the Tom Madsen Airport, but some refer to it as the Dutch Harbor Airport. The main mode of transportation for travelers is a rental car, but you won't find national companies here. North Port Rentals and BC Vehicles are local companies that rent cars, and prices start at around $60 per day, so make sure that you budget for the expense. Taxis are also available, but you might spend $10 or more for each ride.
The best time for a Dutch Harbor trip is in July or August when the city experiences its highest temperatures. Daytime temperatures often hit 60 degrees Fahrenheit, while nighttime temperatures can drop to below 40 degrees. Winter and spring see highs in the 30s and low 40s, which might limit what you can do on your trip.
A visit to Dutch Harbor should include sites like the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, Priest Rock, and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Extra Mile Tours, which is a locally owned company, offers tours of remote areas of the town, giving you a glimpse at sites that many travelers skip. If you act as your own trip planner, try booking a fishing or whale watching trip off the coast.
The beauty and majesty of Dutch Harbor is something that you need to see with your own eyes. While Alaska Airlines is the only company handling flights from Anchorage to Dutch Harbor, you can find a seat on any of the daily flights through Orbitz.com. With cheap prices on flights, event tickets, and hotel rooms, Orbitz.com is your one-stop shop for travel arrangements.
