There are many reasons why one would want to travel from Mississippi s capital to our nation s capital, and you can fly from Jackson to Washington, DC in two and a half hours. Jackson-Evers International Airport (JAN) provides direct connections to Washington and is only 20 minutes from town. The airport can be reached from the 475 exit off Interstate 20.
Washington was designed to spread out like the spokes of a wheel from the mouth of the Potomac. At the hub of the wheel is the federal district that makes up downtown. The government buildings are some of the country s best examples of Georgian, neoclassic and modern architecture. At the core of the district are the National Mall and the Smithsonian. Here, between the Jefferson Memorial and the Capital sit some of the world s great public art displays. The Smithsonian museums offer a variety of exhibits and are free to the public. Neighborhoods like Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan and U Street are popular destinations for the District s young upscale crowd.
You can fly from Jackson to Washington DC, and land at one of two airports. Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) and Dulles International Airport (IAD) both provide connections to Jackson. Summer is a popular time to visit the District as the city fills with visitors from all over the world, and temperatures average in the mid-80s from May to September. The National Mall fills with spectators for fireworks and concerts on the 4th of July.
