Active Mom: Machu Picchu

When you were growing up, did your mom always encourage you and your siblings to say yesno matter if it was an extra scoop of ice cream or going to a sleepaway camp even when you were afraid? Now that she’s adding on the decades, help her check off items on her bucket list by planning a trip to a natural wonder of the world. she should see before it’s too lateMachu Picchu!

This mysterious Incan citadel in the Andes Mountains was built in the 15th century, and is admired for impressive dry-stone walls offering breathtaking views. It’s a smart idea to spend a few days in nearby Cusco to acclimate to the altitude, so consider staying at the JW Marriott Cusco for a comfortable stay, or for a more boutique experience, consider El Mercado. Once you’re near the site itself, splurge on one of the most renowned hotels in the area, Sumaq, to rest after exploring the ruins all day. Want to make it a whole Peruvian escape? Tack on a day or two and visit foodie capital city Lima, where a stay at the Country Club of Lima is a must.

Overworked Mom: Los Cabos

Give this mom type a break in the form of an ice-cold Corona Light, a tub of sunscreen and a trashy magazine, and she’llliterallybe golden. If your family vacays growing up always included sand between your toes and plenty of sunset chasing along the shore, you can return the warm favor this Mother’s Day by upgrading the beach experience for your mom. Instead of trekking to traditional beach destinations in Florida, South Carolina or North Carolina, go a bit further south and explore Los Cabos on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

On the southern tip of the Baja region, your mom’s jaw will drop at the site of pristine beaches, jagged rocksand fish tacos galore. Before you pack your “out of office” sunhat, plan ahead and book your stay at Paradisus Los Cabos, an upscale all-inclusive and indulge mom in a spa treatment (or three) she deserves. Another option is Hacienda Beach Club & Residences, set on a spiraling property featuring comfy cabanas. Regardless of where you choose, just make sure you toast to all she’s done.

Cooking Mom: Thailand

This is for the mom who adores cooking almost as much as she adores you. Combine her two great loves with an opportunity to expand her culinary expertise to uncharted territory that’s many miles (and oceans) from home, as you venture through Thailand together! A country known for its delectable dishes, interesting concoctions and flavors, Thailand provides plenty of cooking classes that are not only inexpensive, but also immersive. Some, like this one in Chiang Mai, also include a market visit.

While budget accommodations are plentiful in Thailand, it’s worth the upgrade to stay at a higher-end resort like Phulay Bay on the island of Krabiwhere fresh fish is available daily. Or, if you’re on the quieter island of Samui, Koh Samui sits atop a hill, giving 360-degree views and offering more affordable rates. If you’re headed up north, stay at the Four Seasons Chiang Mai, where you can wake up with views of rice paddies, wash water buffalo or lounge by the pool. While you’re there, be sure to sample Chiang Mai’s popular main course soup, khao soi.

Sacrificed Everything Mom: Europe

She put her dreams on hold so you could live all yours. Return the favor by giving her the trip to Europe she never got to take. Choose two cities for her passport she never dreamed she’d see in her lifetime—Amsterdam and Prague.

While in Amsterdam, tour the Anne Frank’s House and stroll the Red Light District before grabbing beers and catching up on your day-to-day lives. A fun stay in the middle of the action is the Pulitzer Amsterdam, making for easy commuting. A quick flightor long trainaway is fairy tale Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. Stay at the Mandarin Oriental Prague in the center of Old Town, where you can easily access the Charles River Bridge, explore old cobblestone streets and cool your sightseeing-selves down with a cold beer at the many gardens. Best of all? Brews are cheaper than water!
