This is one of the best hotels we stayed at on our tour of Peru. Elegant, clean and very close to Machu Picchu. You can walk to the train station and to the bus station that will take you to Machu Picchu.
Arrived hot and tired, met with iced tea and cool towels while our reservation was processed. Large attaractive room, large bathroom. Room looked over the dirt road but the buses didn't wake us and we had a great nights sleep. The dinner was included in the price and was excellent with attentive service. Breakfast also very good.
Without any real prior knowledge of what to expect in Aguas Calientes, we booked the SUMAQ Hotel for our one night because of previous reviews and the fact that its rooms were less expensive than some of the higher luxury properties that friends of ours had stayed in. We felt that if we booked something less expensive, we would not be having a very comfortable stay. After spending time wandering around the town, we realized that there were other less expensive options (less than $300/night) that, while maybe not as nice as SUMAQ, would've provided us with all we needed for that one night. Keep in mind when booking a hotel that most people only spend one night in Aguas Calientes, and you will probably not spend much time in your hotel as most of your time will be spent up on Machu Picchu and wandering around the fun little town. This review is not meant to be negative against the hotel itself - the SUMAQ is actually a very nice hotel. Nice lobby, nice bar, nice dining room with a good breakfast spread, free wifi, nice rooms and nice bathrooms. Try and get a room on the front of the hotel with a balcony overlooking the mountains and river. The hotel staff was all very nice and helpful - brought us a free refreshing drink upon check-in and even took our bags up to the train station for us. But if you are only spending one night in Aguas Calientes, I would recommend looking into other options that are not as expensive as they are readily available!
We stayed here for 3 nights while visiting Machu Picchu. It's a very nice hotel but service was hit or miss. We had requested a King room on a higher floor, but got a 2 Doubles room on the first floor. They said they were fully booked and didn't have any other rooms available. We did have a river view room so that was enjoyable but being on the first floor gave away some privacy since hikers were walking past right outside the balcony. We had breakfast, cocktail hour, and dinner included with our reservation. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner (which included a 3 course meal), but cocktail hour was a bit confusing since they didn't specify which drinks were included. Also, the bar area tended to get very busy during cocktail hour and service was a bit spotty. We would sit down at the bar and be ignored until we flagged someone down. Other instances of spotty service: They have turndown service at this hotel, but we did not get it consistently every night even though we left the room for dinner around the same time. At check-in, they served welcome drinks and snacks, but we only received our drink and no snacks. All in all, this is one of the nicer hotels in the area but you are definitely paying for it considering the high room rates.
Stayed here with our tour group in oct 2017. Only one night but it was enough to know what a great hotel this is! Great location, great food, great room!! If we ever get back to Machu Picchu we will come here again!
stayed here for 1 night for my wife's bday & to visit machu picchu; requested a quiet room 2 mos in advance of our date of arrival & then again 1 week before arrival. when we checked in, front desk lady reassured me that we had received a quiet room per our previous requests. later that evening, we realized that our room (back side of the hotel) was right next to the peru rail hydroelectric train tracks/station. as a result, we heard the loud thundering trains every hour or so until 10 or 11 pm & then again starting at 5 am. and it was too late to change to another room, since all of the rooms were accounted for, per front desk. I also told the front desk our room was a bit warm (no a/c in this hotel), & the front desk did not offer any fans to cool down our room. considering that this is a $400 plus per night room rate, I would have expected better service. we stayed at other 4* & 5* hotels throughout peru (for half the price of sumaq), & the sumaq was by far the worst hotel experience we had in peru. as a result, I would recommend that you find another hotel in aguas or machu picchu town.
We stayed here on our journey to Machu Picchu, and happened to stay on our anniversary. We had inquired about upgrading to a river view before we arrived and was anticipating paying the upgrade fee, but both rooms in our party were upgraded free of charge which was an unexpected surprise. They left a note with some treats for us. The room itself was stunning and the view was amazing. They don’t have air conditioning so we had to request a fan, which they brought for us. Our dinner was good, and they brought us something special for our anniversary. Everyone at the hotel was so nice with every interaction. They made us a box breakfast since we were leaving at 4AM to get to Machu Picchu which again was very nice. They had our luggage waiting for us at the train station. I can not say enough about our experience here.
We spent two nights here October 2017 before and after our visit to MP. The staff was outstanding: professional, helpful, and responsive. The room was luxurious, far exceeding our expectations. Meals were creative and delicious. They offer a tea time, lobby bar and very comfortable public area in the lobby. A few of our friends did not want to hike at MP; they stayed behind for a fabulous culinary demonstration/cooking class. Sumaq was a sweet respite for us.
We weren’t expecting much from this hotel as we hadn’t seen any reviews. To say we were pleasantly surprised is an understatement! From the moment we checked in we knew we picked the right place. Cold drinks, hot towels and friendly staff greeted us and whisked us up to a spacious room with lovely views of the mountains. We were also treated to free afternoon tea as well as complimentary pisco sours in the bar. But the best part of all was the food, it was amazing and the service second to none. I urge anyone who is staying here to try the restaurant, you won’t be disappointed! Wish we could’ve stayed longer.
Our friend booked this hotel for us and it was one of the high points of our vacation to Peru. Great luxury hotel and excellent food, drinks, and service. I even got to use the spa which was also very good. Every meal was excellent and top notch. I didn't expect this kind of high-end hotel in the middle of the jungle. Rooms were relaxing and over the top, along with a great view. Treats every night on our pillows and on the table. We learned to appreciate Pisco Sours here and sat by the fireplace in the lobby every night enjoying them. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone. They also coordinated a great guide for us to Machu Picchu, Xavier who was an expert guide and taught us a lot about the culture and pushed us to get up early to catch sunrise on the mountain, and our climb up Huayna Picchu overlooking the ruins. Even when they realized I overpaid for the spa, they tracked me down at the train station to return my money. Very impressive service, and kind people. I'd love to go back here someday, and would recommend it to everyone.
