We stayed at the SUMAQ for one night while visiting Machu Pichu. I had never heard of SUMAQ before, so I was a bit hesitant, but now can highly recommend it. Yes, the Sanctuary Lodge is right at the entrance to M.P., but from I could tell, the SUMAQ is a nicer property although in town. Check-in was effortless. The lobby is not large, but most of the seating area is in the adjacent lounge area. Decor is a warm, rustic contemporary style. Our room was on the ground floor. Most rooms overlook the river which is very nice, but it is also on the road. There is very little past the hotel to create much traffic, HOWEVER,this is the road the buses take to M.P. We did not find the bus noise to be a problem, as they do not run at night, and we were already up when they started in the morning. The bus will drop you off at a stop right in front of the hotel...very convenient. The room was of average size and very well decorated continuing the warm rustic but contemporary decor. Both room and bathroom were spotless. Bathroom was large and well stocked with quality towels and amenities...only a single sink. WiFi was rather weak in the room requiring locating near the hallway door for a strong signal. A request for a "feather-free" bed was quickly accomplished. Breakfast was a large buffet served in the second floor restaurant. Early opening hours allows a hearty breakfast for those wanting to get a head start to M.P. or a very early check-out. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would recommend it.
Sumaq is the best hotel I have ever experienced. We completed the four day Inca trail and were greeted with warm towels to wash our face and a welcome drink. Ruth provided us with an incredible check in experience. We were also delivered a beautiful welcome snack. Ruth explained all of the options that we could partake in during our stay and also let us know that we were upgraded to a suite because we were getting married that evening. We went to explore the town while we waited for our room to be ready, such a cute town. When we got back we went to our room where they had placed rose petals on the bed. In about ten minutes we were delivered chocolate covered strawberries that looked like a bride a groom. We relaxed in the beautiful room with a balcony and Jacuzzi view of the mountains before dinner and drinks. We had drinks at the bar, Carlos makes the most amazing strawberry pisco drink. At dinner Jose made great recommendations for food and wine. Before our ceremony the amazing staff helped us get dressed in traditional clothing. The ceremony itself was perfect with fresh flowers and a wonderful atmosphere. Victor was an amazing translator and took photos for us to have. It was perfect. We had an amazing evening with more great wine. The breakfast was also great in the morning. We also took the cooking class which was great, wonderful pisco sours. Before we left Ruth presented us with a certificate and photos from the ceremony. This is seriously the most wonderful hotel. You can tell the staff care about your experience. I have nothing but positive things to say. You should absolutely stay here over Belmond.
Top class hotel with excellent service. Food at the restaurant was absolutely top class. Will definitely stay again. Walking distance from the town center and close to the bus stop with a stop in front of the hotel on the way back making it great base station on the way to Machu Pichu. The hotel arranges for your luggage to be taken from the train station and delivers it to station which is very convenient. Hard to find any negatives
The Sumaq is a very nice hotel, situated very near to the bus stop (indeed it is on the road to Machu Picchu and is on the bus route - however, you would still need to go to the bus stop at the end of the road back toward Agua Calientes to catch it). The first thing I must say is that you MUST REQUEST A FRONT/ROAD FACING ROOM. Otherwise you will hear the train until very late into the evening -- they don't just run, the trains also have conductors who love to use the whistle....) and the tracks are behind the hotel. We heard nothing from our front/road facing room. The food here is excellent. Breakfast was great, and dinner was always good. Tried alpaca here and it was fabulous. Elevator and air conditioning and hair dryer in the room; outlets here are the US variety (a choice of 110 or 220v), so the two pronged adapter you may have used in Lima is not necessary. The staff here is also wonderful - I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Machu Picchu. Agua Calientes (the shopping/food area) is very close and is also a charming little place.
This is a very good hotel in the village close to Machu Pichu The only negative is the location close to the railway which makes it pretty noisy during the day ( at night the train stops) On the brightest side of the hotel I would like to mention the meals. We took dinner and breakfast that were absolutely outstanding Besides that, the hotel is at a good but not exceptionally high standard
Truly a luxurious Hotel in beautiful setting; your balcony looks out over the river with the mountain cliffs behind you. Staff were friendly and HELPFUL. There is a small price to have the jacuzzi to yourself for an hour..DO IT! Will stay there again if I go back.
Stayed at the hotel for two nights to visit Machu Picchu and found it very good. The hotel is not far from the Machu Picchu bus shuttle and from the Aguas Calientes train stations. The staff are there to help you with luggage to and from the train station, and they even offered to pick up our shuttle tickets for us if we couldn't be bothered. The room had a great view of the river and all we could hear at night was the water flowing down the valley which was extremely pleasant. Food at the restaurant was good for both dinner and breakfast.
Beautiful room with balcony overlooking the river on the edge of town. Room and facilities more than adequate plus a great restaurant serving amazing dinner and a top class breakfast. We were on tour and this was the best hotel we stayed in over a 2 week period.
The hotel is the perfect place to stay for your Machu Picchu adventure. Our stay could not have been any better. This is a first class hotel and consistently goes above and beyond to exceed expectations in every way. We stayed for 2 nights and I am not sure they could have done anything to make our stay more enjoyable. The hotel is clean, comfortable, and the service is outstanding. The food in the bar and restaurant are excellent. Francisco and staff were always there to expect and exceed our expectations. This would be a 5 star hotel in any location, let alone the remarkable location it occupies in Machu Picchu Pueblo. The views and sounds of the river are perfect. You can walk to anything from the hotel. I would stay here again the next time I was in the area without any reservations. If you want a 5 star experience while visiting Machu Picchu then this is the place to stay. Outstanding.
We arrived tired but elated as we had spent the whole day walking up the last part of the Inca Trail up to the SunGate. We were warmly welcomed with a drink, and given information about the hotel including meals and our free Pisco Sour. Our room was very comfortable and we were also greeted by a few chocolates as well! We could hear the river outside, as it had got darker it was hard to appreciate the view. As we were really tired we decided to have some tea, not only was there tea/coffee but also a range of little cakes to have if you wanted. It was a lovely way to relax and unwind. We had booked a table for dinner later which had been recommended to us. We were well looked after by Faustino our waiter for the evening. I was in heaven when I was given a Gluten Free (GF) Menu to choose from as well as being offered GF bread! Jesus looked after us the next morning at breakfast, overall the service in the restaurant and the hotel was excellent. We stayed one night here to recharge our 'batteries' and would certainly recommend this hotel. We spent the next morning walking in awe around Machu Picchu in the rain when we came back we had a few hours, before our train left so we had a little walk up along the river to the covered market which sells a range of bits and pieces, it was not busy so was a good place to pass the time and look for those gifts you might want to take home.
