Our 2nd and 3rd night stopover on our South Island driving tour was spent in this delightful part of New Zealand just past Lake Pukaki and within sight of Mt Cook. The hotel has basic but spacious, comfortable rooms. The staff are friendly and obliging but it is a stopover for coach parties that makes dinning somewhat chaotic particularly at breakfast time. The evening al-a carte menu is limited but the dishes we had were delicious. There is also an evening buffet (in the UK a carvery with the addition of a curry) which we thought disappointing but that is only a personal opinion. Some may find this ideal as it a case of eating as much as you want and is a set price for a 3 Course meal plus coffee. The al-a cartel menu is individually priced fare. The hotel is on 2 floors without a lift to the upper floor, so if you need disabled access you would need to stress a ground floor room required.
Although there was a very large group of rowing students here, there was no noise or disturbance and we had a lovely stay. We had the morning breakfast and evening meals and would recommend both. Evening meal was cheaper than Poppies restaurant opposite, and was good quality. We tried both the lamb shank and the steak, highly recommended and very filling ;-) Our room was large and facing the lovely gardens. As it was very hot, we were pleased to be in the shade in the evening. Very pleased with our stay here!
The Inn is situated on the edge of town and is a convenient stopover on a drive to Mount Cook and surrounding areas. It was clean and tidy but very basic. The windows/doors cover the entire wall to the outside balcony and the sun makes the room very hot. There was no air conditioning or ceiling fan so it was very uncomfortable. We did receive a fan after we requested one which made it easier to sleep.
This hotel was one of the last available when we booked. Twizel is very convenient- between Mont Cook Village and Tekapo- so a great option when you want to visit both. Hotel was quite basic- no air conditioning and breakfast was a let down. But it met our needs as it was clean, with a good bathroom and located right at the entrance to Twizel. I would recommend visiting Poppies- a great restaurant across the street
We spent the night at Twizel in the middle of a South Island touring holiday for us (a Kiwi family of three, son 16) and a British friend. The McKenzie Country Hotel was a great stay with very friendly and helpful staff. We had two interconnecting, spacious rooms on the first floor, which were very clean, if a little dated. No air con, or lifts, but fridge, hairdryer etc and the beds were very comfortable. The showers were over the baths but fine. We made use of the extensive lawn after a hot driving day and it was easy to walk to town to explore. We ate in the bar - as the buffet restaurant was busy with a coach party or two - and had a very nice meal. Nothing was too much trouble for the bar staff. It was a good value, comfortable stay.
A great venue. Comfortable beds and very quiet and peaceful. Good polite service. Would return again. Walking distance to shops and takeaways. No sky tv or movies but other channels fine. Parking a breeze.
This place could use some updating as they still use metal keys and there is no air conditioning or elevator, but our room was spacious and comfy, and the front desk lent us a fan. Breakfast is included, with a really good buffet. You get 500MB of WiFi for free, or you can pay for up to 5GB for $10 which we did. Overall I liked the pleasant country setting, marred only by the busloads of tour groups crowding the lobby as we arrived and departed.
Our room was spacious and comfortable but the hotel has an impersonal look and feel to it. They provide a good buffet breakfast and dinner. The hotel has spacious grounds and is not far from the town centre, which is small.
This hotel has a beautiful country setting. The room was comfortable, the dining was great---this is truly a country setting. We visited here as part of an AATKings tour itinerary. Got a good nights sleep!
This a a big lodge with many rooms. It is quite old fashioned but serviceable. The beds were double which was a bit of a shock. There is no fans and limited fresh air and we would not stay in summer as it would be so hot without air con. The dining room was fine we had the buffet. Great salads , choice of hot foods fine but they did not re fill the dessert area....so instead of pavlova we only had the dregs or some fruit. It could do with an upgrade to all furnishings...comfortable enough for one night though.
