- Friendly staff - New carpets throughout the entire hotel (it still had that lovely new carpet smell when we stayed) - Very good restaurant, the roast dinner that’s offered in the buffet was brilliant. The meat was cooked to perfection with lovely vegetables, only bad thing was the potatoes were undercooked. - Room was nice and clean with comfortable beds - Lovely grounds which were well maintained with lovely views of the mountains - Would 100% stay here again
First off, some of the reviews are not accurate. There are two food markets less than one click away, the hot stays hot if showering less than than an hour, and there are several places to eat in the small town. The Mackenzie Inn is just that... an Inn, remotely located and as such one should not expect a Hilton, Marriott, or Sheraton. Having said that; it is a good place to stay, easy to locate, plenty of parking, easy access to rooms, clean, refrig, large bathroom, soft beds, plenty of pillows, great view of the mountains (rooms facing the garden). Mackenzie Inn (Twizel) is a great alternative for lodging in place of Lake Tekapo for two reasons with one being (cost), which is twice as expensive for not much more than offered at the Inn, and it's less crowded in Twizel. The lobby at the Inn is large with an area for reading or just getting out of the habitat. There are bicycles for hire to safely cruise the town with plenty of hiking trails around the Inn. We did not participate in the morning buffet and only because we love cappuccinos in place of typical breakfast. There is a well stocked full bar for evening contemplations. The most unique reason for being in Twizel is the evening performance of the stars, which the greater area is famous for. No kidding... there are so many stars at this location in one place. The Inn is dated if looking for the above mentioned hotels, but this place is well worth the stop-over even for one night. It's warm, clean, cozy and comfortable and the cost is reasonably with a good reception staff.
The wife and I went away for our first wedding anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food and the service was on the money and the hotel was well worth another trip back.. value for money..
This was a nice simple hotel to stay in. It has a Swiss Alps feel to it. The rooms are simple but cosy. I think it's cute they even have keys for the doors instead of modern swipe cards. it gives the hotel an old feel when the rest of the world has to be modernized. The evening buffet meal was also very generous in portion and choice of food.
we picked this hotel purely as a stop off location as we travelled across New Zealand. We were thankful we only stayed for one night. The room was clean but very dated and clearly requires some work to restore it. we visited in the winter so effective heating is essential. It would have been great had we chosen to stay in the bathroom. But the heater for the main room made a lot of noise but produced very little heat . Each bed had an electric blanket but only two out of the four worked. We ate in the restaurant and were very disappointed. It seemed to be geared up to expect everyone to eat the $38 buffet. Which for the variety of food offered was well overpriced. We opted for the a la carte menu? Having waited 40 mins for our food it suddenly appeared when i asked where it was. By the dryness of my chicken it had been under a heating element for some time... poor experience all over .
good old fashioned charm and very friendly service . The buffet dinner was the best and will be back for sure. Although slightly dated, was clean and comfortable. The dining area and fire place was very inviting and warm as toast. Thanks for a wonderful stay.
Our one night stop-over was great. The staff were friendly, the hotel was warm (there was snow outside) with free wifi. Our room was good with a comfortable bed. The restaurant was enjoyable, and the 'Bed & Breakfast' deal was worthwhile. We will be back!
My stay was perfectly acceptable but more than that, the really nice thing these guys did was post something I had left behind in my room back to my home address. No charges, no bother. So big ups to the room cleaner and the reception staff for great service.
Classic and old fashion hotel. Come with a positive attitude, this hotel offer a very classic feeling, the room is clean, got a bathtub, although bathroom need some work, and warmer need some work too. They also have a native cat living here, very cute cat. They also have a bar with a nice fireplace. And also, this hotel is also one of the hotel booked by lord of the ring crews when they filmed one of the scenes in the area around here
Stopped here for three nights whilst fishing the Twizel canals. Chilly weather at this time of year and we were greeted with a room in which the staff had put on the heater, nice touch and was not expected. Room was completely adequate with two double beds allowing 3 of us to stay in one room. Breakfast, buffet style and good selection of cereals, eggs, pastries etc. We had one evening dinner and decided upon the buffet for the choice of roasts available, lamb, pork and beef. The beef was amazing, broccoli perfectly cooked an all round good value great tasting meal. The bar area is great and the great thing about winter is that the open fire is on and you can add logs to suit. Made a great relaxing area to enjoy a wine whilst watching the main event, if there is one on the big screen. Friendly staff make up the all round package. I am also advised that the team there will look after your catch if you require.
