The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort4.5 out of 5.0

Hotel itself is average. Rooms are mid level 4*, but clean. Property is small. Staff is excellent. The beach is one of the best I have been to around the world, and I have been to a lot of beaches. The beach is the draw for this hotel. It is completely private, extremely white, soft sand with no rock, and the water is crystal clear. The beach and hotel are surrounded by cliffs on 3 sides, so there are not other properties sharing the area. Food in the hotel is not great, the breakfast buffet could be expanded for western tastes and the other restaurants are average. The reason I have come back to this property multiple times is the beach.
It was a much-needed vacation and the place did not disappoint our choice. Summary notes can be found below: The Good: • Resort is located away from the rest of the mass accessible resorts and like that you can have peace of mind and indeed relax • Food is good. Lunch and Dinner are tasty and we’ve tried both restaurants. • The majority of the personnel working in the resort are there for a few years already so they know the area, and can give you good advice. They are also very polite and helpful. • There are lots of turtles, corals and colorful tropical fish in only a 5 minutes’ swim from the beach. • There are lots of monkeys, ashore, too. Areas for improvement: • It is a battle to get to the sun chairs at the beach. You have to wake up at 0600 in order to get down to the beach and put your towel on a chair. This is a resort and you are going there for holidays. If we have to wake up the same time as if we were going to work, then there is no point to pay again to only have a better view. This is a mistake from both the guests and the resort’s management. The guests leave their towels for the whole day (we had an instance where children put the towels for the whole day and never came to use the sun beds) and leave to do other activities creating a whole chaos with people that want to be there for the whole day, and do not have anywhere to put their towels. At the same time the resort’s management knows about this situation and even though there are signs saying that checks will be made every 2 hours • Guests must understand that we do not touch and hassle the marine life. Grabbing a floating turtle because you want to have a selfie is outrageous and very bad for the sea life. These are wild animals and must be treated as such, NOT your pets… • Guests must also understand that the beach is not an ashtray nor a garbage bin. There were many instances that bottles, and cigarette tips were left behind from the guests ending up in the sea front • Mosquitos – the area needs to be fumed more often. At sun down the mosquitos are attacking like crazy. It is impossible to stay at the beach bar area after sun down • Breakfast, is not bad, but not great either. Having to wait 20 minutes for the orange juice dispenser to be refilled is not ideal. Bigger juice glasses of at least 350ml would be a great purchase, too. • Cruise times – a good idea would be to change the cruise times so that the guests are on their own, swimming with the turtles, the reef sharks and seeing the corals. Being at the same time with 300 other tourists is not ideal, and since it is more expensive to book through the resort this a service that can definitely be improved. • There are only two boats to the mainland making it very hard to go and come to the island. The resort’s management should consider having two more boat trips for the resort’s guests, only. • Card details should not be requested (only when payment is due) and not be stored in the resort’s systems. • Snorkle accessories, must be checked and replaced more often. Some of the equipment were chewed from other guests – not nice… • Cleaning can be better in the rooms - bed linen had stains and floors, too
They picked us up from the ferry terminal and we were directed to the lobby. Refreshment was served and we just sit at the lobby while they came to collect the booking reference from us to do the check-in. They have free buggy ride to the room and back to any area you want to go within the resort. Buggy is just a call away. The staff was very friendly and nice. They will patiently assist you if you needed any help. Beach was nice, food is fine, staff very friendly and helpful. Had a wonderful and enjoyable trip.
'Potential' is probably the best description available for The Taaras, because it could be world class, but it's not. What they have is an exquisite natural asset; the island. The beach could easily be rated top 10 in the world; the sea is crystal clear, warm and full of ocean life. Sea turtles, rays and a plethora of fish species are easily tracked down with a basic mask and snorkel. The other pro is the staff. Characteristic of the Malays, they are warm, welcoming, friendly and always smiling. What's holding this resort back from receiving my 5/5 rating on TripAdvisor is three things: 1: Accommodation - it's nice, but it's also tired - quite visible in the bathrooms (mouldy seals etc). 2: Food - the buffet offers a reasonable selection, the a la carte is very limited. In both cases, the quality of food is comparatively low, preparation is wildly inconsistent and frequently, items on the a la carte menu are not available. This needs addressing. 3: Service - the staff are wonderful but the courtesy and 'servicemanship' are absent and incomparable to the like of a Four Seasons for example. This is a lack of training and not a reflection on the people. Incidentally, I bumped into the Group Director who acknowledged the need for investment and improving consistency, which he confirmed were both on the roadmap after this season. In summary, probably right for the money and definitely one to watch out for next season (2018).
Visited as part of our honeymoon, overall had a lovely stay but service is not 5 star. PROS: 1. Beautiful beach, not at all crowded, fenced off against the boats. 2. Our room was spacious and nicely decorated (one of cliff view rooms) 3. Hotel has a house reef where you can snorkel. If you hire a kayak and swim a couple of minutes to the other side, there are many sea turtles, no need to hire a guide. 4. We visited the spa a couple of times, the massage was lovely and the staff very friendly. CONS: 1. The rooms are a bit tired, we still greatly enjoyed ours but worth being aware of it TIPS: 1. be patient, we've had a number of service-related issues (like room service not available till 1 pm, restaurant taking 15 min to prepare the side dish while main is getting cold on the table etc.etc.) 2. booking hotel transfer is the easy option, especially if first time in Asia, but you can also ask the hotel to book you a public ferry (significantly cheaper and offers more time options), there is still a hotel rep at the Merang jetty who will help you to get to the right boat. Public ferry is not offered, you need to ask for it specifically. 3. there are two local street food cafes outside the hotel. We didn't eat there but this is an option if you don't fancy taking water taxi to a different beach and want something cheaper/ different. 4. We saw more turtles in the morning (9-10 am) than in the afternoon.
We recently stayed at the Taaras Beach Resort for 3nights and this was a very memorable trip for us. It is a great family destination with something for everyone to enjoy. The hotel itself is well kept, clean and the service is great. It truly is a family affair with a very warm welcome right as you are greeted at the Kuala Terengganu airport arrival and swiftly jetted off to the Taraas lounge within the airport for some light refreshments as you wait for your transfers to Redang island itself. Once you arrive at the hotel property you are welcomed again in a sit down check in process making you instaneously feeling relaxed. We thoroughly enjoyed the spa services and even took an adventurous ride on the ATV's. Everyone that works there truly work hard to try and make your experience a memorable one. I loved the some touches left by housekeeping in the evening in our room. We loved sitting by the beach and enjoying the beauty of Taaras private beach. I have to highlight the extent of the staff's willingness to help. My husband left his phone at Kuala Terengganu airport in the waiting hall. Unfortunately we had landed back home when I my husband realised he had left his phone. Richard worked with local authorities had the airport to find his phone and then helped facilitate it back to Singapore for us. This truly was remarkable in our eyes. We cannot thank Richard and his staff enough for a vacation we will forever remember.
We went here as a family to celebrate a birthday last June. We had 3 Rooms that were awesome! Great size that included a living room, large bedroom with beautiful bathroom with shower and tub and another toilet as well. We were all down by the beach access, much nicer than up on the hill. The service was amazing, any request was never too much! Adilah, Suhailil (Eddy) Anita and Alfons were exceptional! We all came and left at different times and the manager made sure we were looked after no matter the time! We ate one night at the fine dining on the beach and it was wonderful! Service was impeccable! Buffet breakfasts were a great start to the day! We went out and fed AND SWAM with the sea turtles! The beach is like right out of a movie, so pristine and not over crowded like some of the other beaches on Redang, The Taaras is by FAR the nicest Resort and well worth the time it takes to get there believe me!
We have bin there for five days, and we spent grate time swimming with the tortoises on a beautiful beach with white sand. Close to the hotel are beautiful coral reefs and a multitude of colorful fish. The hotel is surrounded by a rain forest on the one hand, while on the other side lies the ocean with a beautiful hotel's beach. The hotel rooms are spacious, actually it was very big apartment. We had everything that we would like to have in an five star resort. Cleaning service of the hotel was on a high level, all parts of the hotel were clean and pleasurable. The people we met on the Pulau Redang island are very positive and relaxed. These are the people who are always smiling and friendly. In general, Malaysia is a wonderful country, and this hotel is the right choice for your enjoyment. The staff of the hotel was very kind and very professional, in all part of the resort, i the restaurant, on reception, bars.
We went here in early October and stayed in a garden deluxe suite which was lovely, spacious & clean. My husband thinks the decor maybe a bit dated but this is a small thing and I think it suites the jungle setting that you are in. I loved the bathroom & shower! The beach is amazing, better than the Maldives, the water is crystal clear, warm, calm & great for snorkelling & diving at a fraction of the cost. The food was okay, the hotel did run out of things whilst we were there however the pizzas were exceptional. The service is a bit slow, however, who cares? You’re on holiday, it’s not like you have meetings etc to go to. The dining & bar staff are doing their best to provide a really good service & do all that they can for you which was good enough for me. The cleaning staff did an amazing job getting our rooms ready before the official check in time. The guy at the ATV desk lacked customer service skills....my husband & brother in law booked an ATV with him, when they went to the desk for the session booked there was nobody there....he hadn’t booked it in properly....other people had to sort out what was his job. Also the guy on reception was quite rude, he started serving some impatient Chinese people whilst we were sat down at the desk trying to checkout.....I don’t appreciate this when we are trying to sort money stuff out. Our interaction with these two people was minimal and didn’t detract from the great service we received from the rest of the staff. We would definitely go back here again, it may not be perceived as a true five star, however, it is definitely value for money.
We stayed here in April this year for 2 weeks and my review (14.04) was not positive at all with the exception of the Diving Unit. We came back from 14 to 21st October with several doubts about the real improvement on the service level and attitude. We are more than happy for what we have experienced: a very BIG jump into a positive overall development. Starting from the moment they wait for you at the Jetty and at the arrival in the hotel where the new GM, Mr Peter and his management welcome you with a smile. This positive attitude is the constant component for the entire staying. All staff from top management (thanks Mr Richard) to the gardeners have made our holiday very pleasant and relaxing. The landscape still remain awesome, the place is fantastic and now close to perfection for a memorable holiday. A special thanks goes always to the Diving Unit, to Syahir and his fantastic team. We recommend the ATV activity. An enjoyable jungle ride with top professionals. Fun and Safe. Dear Taaras, please go ahead like this and see you all in April 2018. Thanks to all of YOU for taking so good care of us.
