Although in a good location this hotel is vastly overpriced. We requested a "quiet" room with ensuite and found that our room was on the second floor directly over a noisy bar and facing the street. No towel rail provided in the ensuite and cup hooks to hang your clothes on instead of a rail in a very tatty wardrobe. Breakfast was continental with no hot items at all, who wants to eat a cold boiled egg, we certainly didn't. Reported 2 maintenance issues on our first day, and neither was attended to by the third day when we left. Would not recommend for seniors as many stairs on all levels and we found it difficult to manage our suitcases. We had to boil the kettle on the floor as no plug sockets or space. However staff were all very helpful.

Great location - train straight from the Airport to Circular Quay and then just another 150 meter walk t the hotel. Service from all staff was outstanding and there are so many small touches to this place. Will definitely make this hotel my place to stay whilst in Sydney from now on. We had a shared bathroom which was fine as it was cleaned many times a day. Breakfast was also very good with fresh produce. The small concern I did have was the very low water pressure at the shared bathroom & shower.

Location was PERFECT for touring the city. Much was walkable and public transportation was right outside the door. Breakfast was included and served downstairs in the very authentic pub. Food was delicious and plentiful. Many pubs, shops and restaurants were on adjacent streets. The room was very roomy and comfortable but we had to share a bathroom. Although it was never a problem, I prefer the privacy of a bath in room. Unfortunately, we visited during a heat wave and the hotel is old and thus not air conditioned. Sleeping was difficult. I would gladly stay there again in a cooler season if I could reserve one of the few rooms with private bath. Price was very reasonable. Also, within walking distance of the cruise ship we boarded. And walking distance to Sydney Opera house and the Sydney Harbour bridge.

Found this hotel on Booking.com..We wanted to spend a few nights in Sydney before embarking on a Australian cruise. Wow we had an awesome time in the city and the main reason we did was because of our stay at The Russell...So easy to get there from airport, everything so close..We went to the Opera, Manly Beach and explored several museums all within walking distance of hotel! Room was clean. We did a shared bath which was right outside our room..no wait for facilities either. Breakfast was very good in the pub downstairs. Lots to chose from. Our check in was prompt..Everyone very helpful..Gave us maps, directions and tips for us regarding our boarding procedures for our cruise. We enjoyed Sydney so much and plan on returning and of course will stay at The Russell again as it was a great value!

We stayed just one night, we really should have stayed two... The Russell is conveniently located at the base of The Rocks and just a stones throw away from Circular Quay. Checking in and out with Maxine was effortless. Bed was super comfy, big fluffy white towels and a well stocked mini bar... We will definitely stay again.

Charmless, overpriced little hotel! I love quirky small hotels, but the quirks of this place are not pleasing. -Room was cramped, beginning at door which didn't open wide enough to roll in my suitcase. No luggage rack because there is no floor space. Floor is used by portable heater, large portable air conditioner attached by wide duct to window, large minibar (with glass door front that glows luridly all night across from bed). Tucked behind the AC is an old armoire with the top removed to fit in the tight space. That is the closet. A pair of small wicker chairs -- mainly useful for laying the laptop as there is literally no flat space for charging devices. A creaky chest of drawers supports the TV. I am a retired antiques dealer, who loves old furniture - but this was never a nice piece, just old. -Climate control was problematic. Double hung windows were clearly the way to get Sydney's nice fresh air. However strong grease smells came off the alley each evening and I had to close them and rely on the AC. Lots of street noise. -Bath was okay. -Wifi was free but dropped often -Location great for tourists -Breakfast in the bar was ho hum, fruit, pastries, cereal, hard boiled eggs, Not great, not bad. Did not love breakfast dining at a narrow cocktail perch against a column in a bar as the few tables were taken. But by then as I had two bad nights' sleep I wasn't easy to please. -Room view of brick wall, and partial alley -Nice common area sitting room, and roof garden -Warren-like interior hallways have frequent half flights of stairs. Limited lift - if stairs are a problem for you, avoid this place. -A few artist's prints in the hallways. But not a single thing on the walls in the room. No design concept, more of a catch as catch can decor (appealing design is not required, but often part of a "boutique hotel" In sum, this reminded me of cheap old city hotels I stayed in when I was young and broke. But the room rate did not. My two night stay was nearly AUD 800. If I couldn't find better in Sydney around that price, spending a little more would have been worth it to me.

Great little place central to everything. The staff are really friendly and helpful a very beautiful hotel we stayed 1 night and my mum did the bridge climb would defiantly recommend staying here alot of fun and very comfortable

We stayed two nights in a room with a shared bathroom, myself and my husband, toddler and preschooler. Our shared bathroom was literally right outside our door, so no inconvenience at all. The room was spacious and surprisingly quiet as it faced onto the main road (we did have noise from the bar downstairs which was not surprising as we were on the first floor, but it wasn't enough to bother us). The location is excellent - right opposite Circular Quay for travel, a short stroll to the Opera House, and on the edge of The Rocks. The reception staff were lovely, and the included breakfast was a pleasant surprise - more than adequate to get you going for the day. We'll definitely be staying at The Russell again!

This motel for its price range and location is fantastic! You won't find better value for your money in this location! Happy, friendly staff and complimentary breakfast! Extremely happy with our stay!

This by far is one of the worst overrated (boutique ..your having a laugh) hotel I've had the displeasure to stay in. Shower room for the disabled should have slip mats or duck boards health and safety is not evident. Views are of brick walls, it was not only noisy at night (no double glazing) but the windows would not close properly. There was dust on the walls, top of the mini bar and the sprinkler system ( I have photo's if required) Breakfast be early if you don't and there is little left it is not replenished or it wasn't while I stayed there, not many smiling faces. Seriously trying to pass it's self off as eccentric but in reality needs to be brought up to date, actually stayed at the Holiday inn round the corner cheaper & cleaner. To sum up disappointed is an understatement...
