Royal Exhibition Hotel

As a solo traveler I do not need anything close to approaching fancy so I found this hotel quite nice for my needs. Clean rooms, soft pillows and plenty of them, and despite some unavoidable construction noise, a quiet place to use as a daily starting point. As stated, right across the street of the Central train Station, walking distance to Chinatown, good train and bus systems fill in the rest. Hotel pub has good value lunches and dinners.

Another wonderful stay at The Royal Exhibition. Great location, directly across the road from Central Railway Station. Rooms are clean and comfortable, bistro meals are delicious and reasonably priced. Thank you to Voula for her exceptional customer service, and Simon on the bar who was efficient and friendly.

Our first visit to Sydney and the Royal Exhibition proved a good budget place to stay for three nights. You are check in in the bar area and are expected to pay in full for your stay on arrival. We were a bit surprised when our request to see the room before paying was turned down. However, there were no other issues. The room was clean, tidy, warm and comfortable with a modern bathroom. The beds and bedding were good and the room was quiet (effective double glazing) despite being above a bar and building work going on outside. We found the location, right opposite Central Station, incredibly convenient and liked the busy bohemian area. Would definitely stay there again if in Sydney. We didn't get to eat in the bistro as the kitchens were being closed for renovation - another time.

We love going to the Royal for lunch with the family or even staying the night. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The rooms are clean and bathroom is updated, beds are comfortable. If you are looking for a good basic accommodation in the city you will be pleased with the Royal.

Close to Central and handy if you come by train and have an early morning departure at the airport as is very close to the airport line. Room itself was big and roomy. Two queen beds and double glazed windows. Four windows as a corner room, so still able to hear some street noise. Nice clean modern bathroom. Biggest problem was other guests, chatting loudly in the corridors and slamming doors at all hours.

Spent 3 nights here and had very little to fault on this place. It is above a pub but you don't hear any noise at all. Great location literally across the road from central station, or an easy 15-20 minute walk to Darling Harbour/Oxford St/CBD. We walked practically everywhere! Woolworths Metro is 2 minutes walk away. At the moment there is a bit of roadworks going on which makes walking a bit longer, and Uber/taxi drivers can have trouble finding somewhere to park. Only minor and temporary problems. The room itself was very spacious, there were 4 of us and the queen bed was in a whole separate bedroom. Small but modern bathroom. Chairs and wardrobes gave it an old feel but practical touch! I just didn't like the pillows at all. They were so thin and made trying to watch TV or read very uncomfortable. But I thought it was great value for money and would happily stay here again!

Room not cleaned to previous standards. Repairs and maintenance being neglected. Good location but current light rail construction negates that to some extent. It is now part of a large hotel group and it has lost its appeal for me.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Upon check in, we were shocked coz the first floor is a Bar. and we did our check in thru the cashier... hahahaha... new experience. Also, there was a construction in the front of the hotel so our Uber driver cannot drop us in the front of the hotel, we need to walk around to get the door.

The Royal Exhibition Hotel is quirky but somewhat jaded, it needs renovation and maintenance work the pros & cons are as follows: Pros: *Large/Spacious Room *Reasonable sized bathroom *Bed although not King size was comfortable * Good storage space *Staff friendly & helpful * Clean Fresh Linen & Towels *Good Location for access to Downtown Sydney *Average cost for central Sydney Cons: *A/c noisy, continually sounds like a rough old fan *Hot water erratic, had to run it up to 5-10 minutes before warm water is emitted *Room Safe broken and although operational the numeric touch pad was missing so it was a bit hit & miss *Furniture somewhat old & kranky *Wi-Fi erratic and operation is spasmodic *Can hear people walking in room above, almost stomping *With the Sydney Light Rail development work right outside the Hotel the heavy construction machinery is noisy in the morning and throughout the day, also taxi pick-up and drop-off difficult *Bistro not quite what it was cracked up to be In short not sure I would choose to stay here again, not unless it is renovated

This hotel is in the ideal location for a stay in Sydney, it is right opposite the central train station were you can catch a train to anywhere in and around Sydney and possibly anywhere in Australia, very easy to get to and from the airport it is very near China town and Surry Hills (very upcoming area). The hotel is an older building with some great caricature and period features we really liked the ceiling decor, our room was very large plenty of space and very clean with a good fridge and tea and coffee, even though there was road works around the Hotel (new tram lines going in) it did not disturb us at all, and downstairs was a very large Pub with great beer, again nose was not a problem, very helpful and friendly staff, WiFi was not the best in our room but OK downstairs. my only disappointment was that they did not do breakfast! and we had to go out to one of the numerous cafes near. I will certainly stay here again next time I am in Sydney
