Courtyard by Marriott Ventura Simi Valley3.0 out of 5.0

The essence of this review is that this a below-average to average Courtyard (which has its own meaning for those who have tried the brand), but at a grossly inflated price. For my $283 ($318 including tax), I got a very average room that looked quite tired. In the end, everything worked. There was coffee (below average quality), there was internet (free, and 9MB upload and 9MB download speeds, but very balky), there were amenities (extremely parsimonious quantities--don't try to get two shampoos out of one tube, and the soaps were parakeet-sized). The mattress/bedding were just fine. They really need to do a better job of keeping the place up, and it is the simple things that you notice. For example, the fittings in the bathroom were loose. The controls to the sink in the room were loose. Breakfast is not included--there is a breakfast bar in the lobby where for $8 you can get a one-egg sandwich, which is quite a bit above average. Good to know however, is that this hotel is situated in such a tacky neighborhood that it is right next door to a lot of fast food chains, so enjoy! This is clearly a hotel you only go to when there is no alternative. It would be barely acceptable at $125, but at the price they charge it has to be avoided if possible, It is a terrible value for money.
This hotel is located immediately off of the 118, so it is easy access and gets you where you need to go in the area quickly. Located close to many choices for food, most within about a 5-10 minute drive...if not walking distance! (Panda Express is just next door, if you need something quick!) The hotel is clean and appeared new, the staff was very nice. The only problem was the lay out of the floors has a number of rooms that are either by the elevator or the ice machine. The ice machine is literally in the hall, not even in a small room off to itself. As elite members, we have away from elevator listed on our profile...and we were put right next to the elevator. So the moved us...right across from the in the hallway ice machine. Moved again to the first floor...which was a bit better. We even did early check in on the Marriott app, which usually gets us a room placement away from noisy areas (very light sleepers). So if you are a light sleeper like us and need specific room locations, make sure you check in early or call them for room placement!
Our room on the second floor was spacious and comfortable. The staff was helpful, and the hotel was near good restaurant options. Close to the Reagan Library. There is a nice place for drinks and breakfast for a charge.
The hotel was consistent Courtyard quality. The location provides many restaurant choices and shopping within walking distance. A nice coffee shop is right next to the hotel.I was told by local businesses that this hotel is often completely booked.
A solid stay as expected. The room (329), overlooking the pool, was clean, comfortable, bright and quiet. Breakfast was good enough and both the staff and wifi did their job. Did I leave anything out?
Of the 6 hotels we stayed in during our trip to California, I'd rank this one as the best. The exterior and interior of the hotel has a very upscale and stylish look. Checkin was quick and the clerk was very friendly and talkative about where to eat and what to see. We were given a room on the 3rd floor overlooking the outdoor pool and patio area. Didn't try the pool but it looked very, very nice. Room was very large with 2 queen beds, a very large bathroom and even a balcony. Room was very clean. Hotel is located in a mini shopping complex that has stores and restaurants. Hotel does have a little bistro that does serve drinks and small meals like sandwiches and salads. We ended up walking next door to a Panda Express. Also noticed a sports bar in the same parking lot. Parking lot looked large enough (since it's combined with the other businesses) to accommodate an RV or other large vehicles. Overall, the hotel is in a safe location and is only a few miles from the Reagan Library.
The best aspect of this property is that it is in close proximity to the Reagan Library. There is also adequate free parking. Upon arrival, we were helped by a nice desk staff. When our key did not work, we were promptly helped and the problem was resolved. The room was adequate but the mattress did not feel quite as plush as we had at other Courtyard properties. The handle in the shower was a bit loose. We had hoped to report it upon departure but no one was at the front desk when we left. We left our keys at the desk. Perhaps the most disappointing part of our stay was that although we are Gold members of the Marriott rewards program, no breakfast was offered unless we paid for it. On the positive side, the breakfast area was attractive and well kept. It was nice that there were individual televisions at the tables. We are usually very happy with our stays at Marriott properties but this one fell a little short.
In my travels I have stayed at least 100 Courtyard properties and this ranks high on my list. On approach you will a nicely landscaped exterior and a clean modern lobby. The front desk clerk was friendly and the key card was in my hand. My room had been updated and was very clean with one exception (oily residue on some surfaces probably from something like microwave popcorn). The bed was very comfortable and a good night's sleep was the result. The next morning I had a great view of the valley. Breakfast was ordered at a counter in the updated multi purpose restaurant. All and all a very good experience.
The rooms were in good shape. The front desk staff was great. Not being able to get anything other than room coffee at 6 am is a bummer. The worst part of the stay is the staff going in and out of the employee only door right across the hall from our room. It opened and closed loudly at 1:14 am, 2:20 am, 255 am, 4 something am. I know this because it woke my wife and I each time the door opened and closed. Other than these two problems the stay was fine.
I've the room. All brand new. Good location and top notch restaurant/bar for breakfast. Simply good stay. Sports bar in same parking lot. Excellent location (you need a car). Love the smart tv-s and good wifi Nothing bad to say.
