We arrived in San Sebastien from Bordeaux without a reservation. Luckily at this time of year there is availability. The Maria Cristina a hotel is centrally located and in close proximity to many sites. San Sebastien has incredible food. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended.!
This is a beautiful hotel, with amazing staff, service and ambiance. Our luggage got delayed for two of the three days of our trip. Staff were very sympathetic and couldn’t do enough to help us. We loved our stay, Hotel is perfect location. We completed the MIMO Pintxo tour which was a great add on, highly recommend. We ate in the bar and Miss Saigon restaurant again two very different but beautiful dinners..really enjoyed both. We had breakfast included in our stay, this again is very worthwhile and the experience in itself was amazing. Breakfast is a buffet style with a chef available for special requests. I can verify both the omelette and poached eggs are delicious. There is nothing you could wish for, every taste bud and culture catered for. We thoroughly loved this hotel and would love to return to see more of the city and sites, with our two children. Thank you for making our holiday very special.
The Maria Cristina is wonderful for all the ‘usual’ reasons - physical comfort, elegance, courtesy of the staff, the food, location - everything. But one aspect stands out — the concierge staff - especially Stefania Ntregka. I was tthere to do family history research — which included the role played by the hotel in accommodating refugees fleeing Nazi Getmany. Ms. Ntregka helped me a great deal - and I appreciate her efforts beyond words. Thank you so much.
Simply the best hotel stay I've ever experienced. I can't fault them anything. Even my husband who is usually indifferent about hotels still comments about how wonderful the stay was. I'd visit SS just to have another stay at the hotel.
Hotel Maria Cristina went beyond my expectations. The service and staff was impeccable by meeting my every need. The rooms were huge and very beautifully decorated. The gift shop is amazing filled with tons of local souvenirs. The hotel provides bikes free of charge for their guests to use as they tour the beautiful area of San Sebastian. They offer cooking classes along with food tours, which seem to be very good. The bar, restaurant, and lobby is beautifully decorated from the early 1900s. I cannot say enough about this wonderful hotel. It is an ideal place to stay while visiting the Basque region of Spain.
We visited San Sebastian for the first time in August 2015. We made the mistake of not staying that the Maria Cristina. When we visited again in 2017 there was no where else to stay. The best hotel experience in a Spanish hotel. Without knowing it, we stayed during the celebration of the Tamborrada. At first we were a little concerned about the drumming. There was nothing to be concerned about. We had the special dinner at the hotel (locals, not just out of town guests, attend) and had a fabulous 24 hour experience. It was great to be so close to the parades, drumming and celebrations.
You will be hard pressed to find anything comparable to the María Cristina in San Sebastián. The hotel is beautiful with a storied past - Audrey Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, and Spanish royalty have all stayed here. The location is central and walking distance to everything. The service is excellent - they sent a bottle of cava and dessert for my husband’s birthday, and arranged the most wonderful walking pinxto tour we could have imagined with Discover San Sebastián. Highly recommend.
A classic Belle Epoque luxury hotel, from the early 1900s, frequented by royalty and recently renovated to the latest luxury standards in keeping with its glamorous past. Our room was spacious and well designed, including a lovely view of the river and ocean and the hotel is pet friendly. The lunch at the bar/restaurant, in the lobby, was excellent and reasonably priced. The hotel is perfectly situated just a couple of blocks from the gastronomic centre of San Sebastian, which includes an interesting market with all the delicacies of the Basque region. On our return to San Sebastian, which is a must, we will also return to the Maria Cristina. Finally, we were fortunate to meet the general manager, who is a charming host.
A lot of hotels call themselves luxury but very few really know what it means. I have much higher expectations for luxury hotels and very few pass my test. HMC remains true to the definition of what a luxury hotel should be. From the moment I made my reservations months prior to our arrival to our departure, the hotel lived up to my expectations and even surpassed it some aspects. Let me start with Ms. Eugenia Lopez who went out of her way to help us with our tight reservations needs. We went there in early Sept which is peak season and she help us get a coveted rate which I got for the wrong dates which I explained to her and she worked with me to make it happen. This is the type of service you get from hotels with employees who know what true customer service is and will do what they can WITHIN REASON to accommodate unique situations. We stayed at room 130, we can only afford the standard room and there are only few rooms in this garden category which are on the low floor. I typically dont like staying on lower floors due to noise but that wasnt a big issue at all. The room was beautiful. Old charm with classic touches. For a standard room in Europe I though the size was ok. Well laid out and very functional. Has all the amenities that a luxury hotel offers (plush bathrobes, slippers, high quality toiletries, etc). The shower was pretty amazing, I spend an extra 5 mins every time I am in there. The internet service was pretty fast and reliable as well. Aesthetically, this hotel captures the elegance and sophistication of its time period yet adapting to the modern trends. Service is what truly defines a property for me. You can have the best looking property but if your service is poor, you are DEAD TO ME. The service here is professional, polished but still very personal. I always judge a luxury hotel by the quality of their concierge and the concierge team here is one of the best ive experienced in my world travels. I have to call out Ms Edurne, beautiful, charming and very knowledgeable. Her recommendations and responses were spot on. I can't remember the younger gentleman who also helped us on days when Edurne was not there, he was also excellent. You cannot ask for a better location while in San Seb, this hotel sits regal in the middle of the city where everything can be reached via foot. The price is not cheap but this is the true price of luxury. I don't mind paying the money if I am getting what I paid for. So many "LUXURY" hotels charge this amount of money and you leave feeling ripped off. Not this one, it is worth every euro.
This is another very late review (September 2015). This is a beautiful, well-located hotel with stunning rooms. I have to give a shout out to Raul, the most lovely concierge at this amazing hotel. I got food poisoning (do not eat pintxos in restaurants with little clientele- we stopped for coffee off the Park Alderdi Eder and I got more than I bargained for). Raul came up to the room with the doctor and translated everything as we spoke no Spanish and the doctor no English. I felt sorry for hm having to relay all of the horrible symptoms to the doctor, as you could tell that he was a bit shy. He then accompanied my husband to the pharmacy to collect all the necessary medications. It was only one negative in a whole trip full of positives, but Raul went above and beyond.
