bad experience concerning security. I reported stolen money to the front desk and asked to speak to the owner. He said the owner would come to speak to me. HE NEVER SHOWED UP!

We stayed here for one night when we got to Costa Rica. The accommodations were alright. Nothing luxurious but the rooms were clean and it was in a central location in downtown San Jose.

I am an American that has lived in Costa Rica for over 5 years and El Maragato is the only place I stay in San Jose. The location is superb and the staff are even better. Walking distance to all the museums and you walk out the front door onto the Central Avenue, the cities walking avenue. The hostel has recently done some renovating so its even better; new 32" plasma TVs, new carpet, new curtain, new bed spreads and some new paint. I recommend a balcony for the views. Try to stay on floors 7 and 8; the views are better and the street noise is less. Stay here!

The hotel is OK, the staff are rally helpful, just don't ask for room with terrace, because them have a window to the central Avenue, and you will not sleep at all, is too loud! You must and have to ask for rooms in the opposite side to the central Avenue

I live in Liberia Costa Rica and travel to San Jose monthly. I have shopped around and El Maragato is the only place I ever stay. Its clean and comfortable with a friendly staff and the location cannot be beat. It is right on the central avenue and next to the Plaza de la Cultura. There is a supermarket right next door and you can walk to all the city's cultural sites and museums. I prefer the rooms on the top floor and in front with balconies but if you are adverse to the noise (street vendors mostly) you might want a room in the back without balconies. Either way, I recommend rooms as high up as you can get.

Right downtown San Jose, perfect for walking. Not good if you have a car - no parking. In fact, vehicle access is limited by the central ave being pedestrian only. I stayed on the 7th floor, facing the street. It was a bit noisy, as other people have commented. Get some ear plugs, you'll be fine. And it dies down by about 10pm-ish. Nice enough place, good enough price that I extended my stay by two days to finish some errands in town. It sounds a bit silly, but I really felt looked after while I was there. This was my first trip outside of Canada as a single female traveler. Staff had plenty of information on fun stuff to see around town, felt safe in the hotel. Good value - coffee and fridge in room. Comfy bed.

Room carpets are dirty, also the ceiling is in bad conditions, get a room in the upper floors to avoid noise.

I travel to San Jose every month or so and I always stay at the El Maragato. It is located right in the heart of the city; right on the central avenue. I recommend a room in the back and as high up as possible (without balcony). A balcony can be nice but is not worth the street noise and yelling vendors. The ones in the back are nice and quiet. The breakfast is simple but delicious and filling. The staff is very friendly and helpful and 1,000 colones tip here and there goes a long way. If you use the mobile app and special offers you can secure a room for 2 with breakfast for less than $35 a night. You will be steps from the National Theater and Cultural Plaza and a couple blocks from the Central Market, National Museum, Gold Museum and PreColumbian Museum. Can't be beat for the price!

We stayed there one night. After arriving in San Jose. The room was clean and was also quiet during the night. It was also really convenient because it was located right in the downtown area. We were able to walk from the bus stop to the hotel after arriving from the airport. The staff was really nice and answered all of our questions. The only downside is that it's a bit hard to find, especially they are painting the sign right now.

Staff was helpful, location perfect, everyday had room service and morning breakfast was ok. Like the coffee too!

The room is pretty pedestrian, but for the cost per night it was decent. The hotel entrance is on a "walking mall" in the heart of San Jose. Easy walking access to the main tourist sites downtown. It would be a good stay for someone on a budget who likes the hustle and bustle of the city. The free continental breakfast is a nice perk. Ask for a room away from the street if you prefer a quiet night's sleep.

if you are simply looking for a place to lay your head as you explore san jose and the surrounding areas this is the place. Nothing fancy. In fact, there was an issue with the bed, the carpet is dated and old. However, the selling points are the bathroom was really good, location is perfect, and the staff is tremendous and helpful in every way. Plus, free breakfast which is good. I would recommend but don't expect a five star hotel.

Costa Rica has no street addresses and is particularly hard to get around, especially in San Jose. We were never able to find the hotel, so found a Best Western and stayed there. Would never book packages again as we also had MANY problems with Spirit Air as well.

pass some very quiet days in the middle of urban San Jose march. the hotel is conveniently located and offers good service for the price. the only drawback that was presented was that the room I stayed in did not have remote control air conditioning and I got to spend heat overnight because the person who met me at the hotel could not solve that problem, so other well.

This is not a big fancy hotel,8 floors & 29 rooms,if u prefer quiet time get a regular room & if u prefer a view get a room with balcony & be prepared for a lot of noise!!You get basics, regular TV(no flat screen & no HD),small fridge & a mini bar, good size room with renovated bathrooms with daily cleaning on demand by this sweet lady name Olga. The carpet inside the rooms are very old & dirty could use some attention, the supermarket next door makes it very convenient for snacks & drinks:)),daily breakfast is also good,& free wifi worked just fine on the 7th floor for me.The people in front desk MR Al Paulo,Luis & Jorge are very kind & polite & speak good English, when asked to change my room for a room with balcony they did it the next day:)),this hotel is in the middle of everything if u don't mind to walk a couple of blocks & after all you can not complain for what ur getting for the price($35 if reserved on Internet)

Good location with a small but friendly staff and good complimentary breakfast. The amenities are scare and the rooms have the bare minimums but if you're looking to spend to majority of your time away from your hotel room then this is a good spot.

No major problems. Help seem annoyed when asked for help

The staff was very helpful and friendly, and the location cannot be beat for access to central San Jose. Wifi rarely worked which was disappointing but overall it was a comfortable room. Breakfast was good.

Hard to find, location different from the one given, but persevere, it is there. Finally found this centrally located hotel, had a good sized, comfortable room with balcony overlooking the main thoroughfare of San Jose. The street traders and bleeping road crossing signals make this another hotel where earplugs are needed. Good breakfast and fun location make this value for money.

Good, no complai ts. Close to center city acctivlys
