First of all, the positives about this hotel: well located, quiet, and a great breakfast (and breakfast lady, Rosa, who was extremely efficient.) However, although I can't quite put my finger on it, something was 'off' about this hotel. I think it was the inconsistency - in service, in accommodations, in housekeeping. We had two rooms reserved for ourselves and our sons in the 'Residenz' building, which is across the street from the main hotel. We booked these rooms specifically because we heard that they were air conditioned. One room was clean, modern and bright, and everything seemed to be working well (even though for some reason the hall mirror was on the floor, leaning against the wall.) The other room (despite being right next door) was spotty. First of all, long dark hairs were everywhere - in the bed, on the pillows, on the bathroom floor, in the tub, etc. It didn't look as though the cleaning was very thorough everywhere else, either, as glass rings were left on the tables, and the room appeared to need a good vacuuming. The room was darker, had an old TV, and the air-conditioning would only work if the room card stayed in the slot by the door. We immediately went to the front desk, and the cleaning staff was sent to the room. They arrived with a few pillow cases and a spray bottle and started spraying down the tub. When we returned to room it looked cleaner, but I didn't trust that it had been done thoroughly. The next two days though, it was spotless ... and chocolates were even left out. (I should note that at first we had asked to change rooms, but the room we were offered was smaller and darker with a worse view than the one we had (as well as having a very noisy air conditioner), so we stayed put and asked for better cleaning.) I can't say that I really enjoyed my stay here. It felt strange to be 'across the street' from the main hotel - like we weren't really staying there. Desk staff was friendly enough, but not overly so. I know that the ratings for this hotel are inconsistent, which, given our experience, now makes sense.
We had stayed at this hotel 17 years ago and had kept fond memories of it. Because we wanted this to be a treat for ourselves, my wife and I had booked a 'romantic suite'. Very bad decision. We were sorely disappointed when we entered the suite (called 'The Magic Flute'). Yes there was a lot of space but the way it was fitted out was so drab, old fashioned and uninspiring, we really regretted having taken a suite. To be clear, it was all very clean (as you would expect at this price) but whoever designed the decoration must go back to interior architect school. The top prize for bad taste goes to the bathroom. It is childish (supposedly reflecting the magic flute theme, so much for trying...) and lacks any stylishness. We asked reception to change rooms but they were fully booked and clearly unwilling to even consider that. I realize that many people who have been to this hotel are very happy about it. Note that there are very different types of rooms, so if you are lucky, you will be happy. You are just taking chances. We will not be back. Keep in mind there is no aircon in the rooms in the main building. It was not particularly warm when we were in Salzburg but the room was very warm and so we slept with open windows. The night noise outside from people returning from a party was recurrent and not very pleasant. We do want to recognize the lady in the breakfast room. She was always very welcoming and helpful.
Located just a couple of pedestrian blocks from the river and Old Town. Staff very helpful. Rooms were clean and had enough space. Complementary breakfast was a buffet with eggs, bacon, toasts, pastries, fresh fruit and several other items. Plenty of restaurants located a couple of minutes away.
The pictures of the lobby and common areas are accurate. However the rooms are not air conditioned and spacing is tight. My husband is 6'4" and couldn't fit in the shower because a soffet prevented the shower door from opening all the way. We understand that Salzburg was unseasonably hot but there is no air moving through the hallways, staircases yes! No elevator and the staff didn't offer to take our bags! The smoke smell was oppressive in the hallways. A few well placed ceiling fans in the hallways and in each bedroom would have helped. They did provide standing fans for our room but it was just uncomfortable. The hotel Is located in a good area. Easy walking to a lot of sights. Nice choices of restaurants and shopping near by. Breakfast was included also. But it was too hot and smoky to rest well.
A comfortable hotel, in a great location - we were able to walk pretty well everywhere we wanted to visit. Friendly and helpful staff. Very nice pool and spa. Room comfortable but a bit small and no air-con, so needed to keep noisy fan running all night. Also, could do with more power points, given how many devices we wanted to charge.
Location of the hotel was good. Our room in residenz-side was nicely decorated and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and had lots of things to choose from. The spa (the pool and proper hot finnish sauna) was cozy and a brilliant extra to the experience. Would visit again.
Extremely nice room across the street from the main hotel. Clean, big room, and nicely furnished. The only issue I had was the shower/bath combo. You're standing there making sure that water doesn't get in the floor from the partial clear door on there. There isn't really room to shower without getting water in the floor. Breakfast was good.
Strong smell of humidity in the staircase, ANTS in the kitchen, even in the dish-washer. We asked for some clean towells, never got them. No cleaning in 4 nights. You have to take care of the garbage. No coffee cups for the coffee machine, had to go buy some in a grocery store. Parking 2 streets away. Pedestrian street, meaning you have to roll your luggage and then take them up the stairs- no elevator. Very used pillows. Frankly overpriced for what you get. Terrace but no furniture to enjoy it. Big appartement, two levels. Pretty but not pratical for a family neither two couples: bedrooms visible from the upper level. Children's bedroom too far appart and too many stairs. We were releived to leave this place!
I am surprised to be writing this. I have visited this hotel on other occasions and left positive reviews. This time though it's was so awful I will never be back. The problem was the room. We booked a classic double. We had done so before and rooms were ok. This time we had rooms 52 and 53. They were both dark, dingy, incredibly hot, poorly furnished and totally unsuitable for a 4 star hotel. They don't meet the standards of a three star. No 53 had mould in the bath, the shower in 52 was almost unusable given its odd shape. There were pieces of skirting board missing. We felt that these rooms had been miss sold as not at all as suggested on website We complained but told they were fully booked and that their rooms had a variety of looks. Fine but cheap and nasty is not a look for a 4 star hotel. We wanted to leave immediately but we're told we had to pay for a nights accommodation so we stayed a night and then we left. We are now in a much better hotel for less money. The receptionist seemed to accept that people complain about these rooms all the time. To the hotel you have let yourselves down and should be ashamed of letting those rooms. The only good point was Martha who runs the breakfast room excellently.
Where do I start?? First, I made reservations three months in advance and the staff was always quick to respond to all of my emails, usually within hours. Second, they were able to communicate to me through email and properly set my expectations. When I arrived a few hours early. They held my luggage (not a new concept I know, but a first for me). They seemed very relaxed, while being energetic and enthusiastic in serving others. They asked which language were we comfortable communicating in since my spouse speaks German and I speak more English they did a mix and it worked perfectly. They wore jeans with matching shirts/vests!! How cool is that? This enabled them to appear more flexible and dynamic when dealing with customers, but not unprofessional. If one staff member didn't something they quickly reached out to another. Each member seemed ready willing and able to assist another. All appeared to be cross-trained to cover any need. We were able to book a tour, get maps for shops and restaurants (Again, nothing new, but we got several members' input. Not just one). The staff made the stay for us. The room was nice, but knowing that the staff was willing to go out of their way to serve made it even better. They worked well together and seemed very team oriented. (at least they gave that impression.....awesome job!!) The breakfast was nothing to sneeze at. You could smell them making breakfast about an hour before it was offered up to customers. The hotel location is literally a five minute walk from a parking garage. Stop by the hotel first and get your parking token before proceeding to the garage to park. You are about 10-15 minutes from the main train station, 5-10 minutes from the Altstadt, and tons of shops and restaurants are nearby. The hotel had all the little amenities that made the stay comfortable. I just cannot say enough about this place. While we were there, we actually made reservations for yet another stay with them in a few months. THAT'S how pleased we were. Large chain hotels could really take lessons from this place. It truly is the little things that made the difference. It was always clean, presentable, had plenty of amenities to go around, and everyone always had a smile on their face. It's as if they knew their customers were exhausted, and just wanted to give them the best stay possible. As I said, we're going back! Ask about where the best room would be for you. They have more than one building with rooms. Tell them about your travel plans and expectations, they will do their best to accommodate. We had a street side room and it was not noisy at all. We also stayed on a Sunday and Monday night too, but even still. I expected traffic noise, but didn't hear any. And we slept with the windows wide open at night too.
