Rydges Rotorua4.0 out of 5.0

This place has generous size rooms and fantastic breakfast. However only certain rooms have air conditioning. We were fortunate to have been there on rainy days or our room would have been unbearable. We are well traveled and did not think to ask about it. Lesson learned! Travel to New Zealand you have to check for a/c.
+ the first Rydges (this was our 3rd one in NZ), where the receptionist at the checkout asked how was our stay + beds to sleep on + the door that closed behind us when we left the hotel - dirty and extremely dated hotel, definitely needs a renovation - the staff is not trained and has no idea about the Discovery program, therefore only a part of benefits have been provided. “We have nothing” was the answer to our complaint! - shower gel does not exist in this hotel, the staff has no idea what is it! Only soap, shampoo and conditioner have been provided - pool out of order - not very handy when there is pouring rain outside - restaurant menu in a very bad condition. We have had three of them in our hands and all had seen better days. One is afraid what would be on the plate considering the state of the menus - soaps that we have opened the previous day have been thrown away by the housekeeping attendant and we needed to open a new ones - obviously the hotel is cost saving on the wrong turf - quality does not match price
This hotel has friendly staff and a great Atrium dining area which, for us, served an adequate full breakfast. The complex is let down by tired decor and a lack of maintenance. We had a room on the top floor during a summer downpour. The roof leaked significantly in several places fortunately only in the corridors, which had rippled carpeting, and not the actual room. To our surprise the room was not air conditioned (some rooms apparently have aircon) and as the relative humidity was 99% and the temperature in the high 20s, a good night’s sleep was not possible. The advertised pool was out of order and this appeared to have been the case for some time. A lift was out of order for some time too. Disappointing.
Stayed here in 2016 and then returned in April 2017. They made a point of welcoming me back and gave me the same room as last time. This was most appreciated. The rooms are generous with high ceilings and plenty of space. We had a spa room with a balcony overlooking the race track. Would highly recommend. Of all the Rydges hotels I have stayed in this one is definitely my favourite. Thanks guys you are always so welcoming. Hope to return again soon.
Robit and the staff at the Rydges were awesome very helpful and friendly, made us some delicious cocktails and new what he was doing and the room was great also. Would stay here again for sure. Price and service was great
This hotel was chosen by APT as we were on a touring holiday. About 20-25 minutes walk from town and about 5 minutes drive to the Maori Cultural centre Te Puia. The hotel seemed ok on first impressions. Our room was nice and big, had the usual fridge, tea coffee. However, it had no air conditioning and the temp outside was extremely hot- there was however, a floor fan in the room and a ceiling fan which gave little relief really. Option? open the window, which if fine if you don't mind the smell of sulphur. There is also no safe in the room. The other negative was , after our group visited the culture centre, the first lot came back at 20.00hrs to find the bar at the hotel was shut! The excuse was it "wasn't busy enough". The only drink you could get was through the restaurant which offered wine only, so tough luck if you wanted a gin and tonic! Personally I think this was unacceptable, and as a hotel they should have the facilities available to paying guests. The pool was also closed. Just a couple of doors down from our room there was a room service tray that had been left outside a room and remained there the whole two days we were there! Some of our fellow travellers said the rooms were not that clean- ours was acceptable The hotel did have a complimentary laundry room- you just had to purchase the detergent. Breakfast was included and was okay- but again not up to the standard of the Rydges hotel in Auckland. Therefore, I'm afraid I only give this an average rating as Improvements need to be made
Our room was spacious and clean, the staff was fine and he included breakfast was good, but the were a few negatives: there is no A/C and though there is a ceiling fan the room was warmer than we prefer (and when opening the windows you get to better experience the not so wonderful sulfur smell); there was no room safe; and the wi-fi was very weak.
We chose this hotel as it was location on Fenton Street and was handy to town. We were extremely disappointed that a hotel that professes to be a 4 star hotel doesn't even have air conditioning. Our room was on one of the higher levels but only had a ceiling fan which didn't make the room very comfortable so at least we were able to open the window which had the downside of letting in all the road noise from the busy Fenton Street into our room all night while we were trying to sleep. These opening windows are not safe if you have children in your room. The room had 2 large beds and was clean and tidy but the bathroom had some hair clips presumably from a previous occupant on the bathroom floor. We arrived around 5.30 pm so there would have been plenty of time for the room to be prepared properly and professionally. Maintenance needs to be improved as the bathroom didn't have any hangers / hooks behind the door and had a frame for 2 toilet rolls but one roll holder was missing so there was only one toilet roll with only a few paper segments left on the roll. We had to phone reception for an additional toilet roll, which arrived in a timely fashion about 15 minutes later. When we arrived at our room outside the door there was a tray containing dishes and food scraps from a room service delivery presumably from the last occupant. This tray remained outside the door for around 5 hours. The room didn't have the usual mini bar but presumably it was meant to as the front desk staff asked, when we were checking out, if we had used anything from the mini bar. Unfortunately we wont be staying here again until they install aircon in the rooms.
As a family of 4 (dad, mum, toddler, and baby) we prefer this hotel over Ibis and Novotel due to the room size. With a double room (2 beds) there is still plenty of room for our very active boy to play within the room without the need to jump all over the beds :( Spa bath is a bonus for the little ones in place of a pool. To be fair as per some of the other reviews it is a little dated, and the pool is no longer available but they do serve a good breakfast and you can't beat having that extra space when travelling with little ones. They provided a portable cot for the baby which was tidy and clean. Noise can be an issue if you're a light sleeper. In Rotorua don't be put off by the staining of the tapware in the bathrooms, the sulphur in the air at Rotorua is highly corrosive to all metals.
we stay here of choice when we stay in rotorua right next to race course close enough to town but with out the hushel bushel of town . heated pool is a bonus and we always get a in room spa which is nice after a day or night out
