Many who make the decision to stay in Rosarito hotels speak fondly of their time spent gazing at picturesque sunsets, riding horses on the beach or sharing drinks with new friends.
Tijuana International Airport
Although Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) is the closest airport, the vast majority of the flights landing here originate in Mexican cities, and none come from American locales. However, those flying from Tokyo or Shanghai do have the option of flying directly to this airport. A taxi from Tijuana International to Rosarito will cost about $40.
San Diego International Airport
San Diego International Airport (SAN) welcomes visitors to the greater San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area from a variety of American communities, as well as international cities such as Toronto and London. A 10-minute trip on the 992 bus to the American Plaza station and a 45-minute journey on a Blue Line train will take you to the border. This trip will cost about $3 while a taxi ride to the border would set you back about $75. Once there, walk across the border and take a cab to Rosarito for roughly $25. Make sure to negotiate a price prior to starting the cab ride.
Where to stay
The best accommodations can be found on the Transpeninsular Highway, close to the center of Rosarito and near to the shore. Hotel Festival Plaza is an ocean view resort complex in the heart of Rosarito Beach, complete with a colorful Ferris Wheel, restaurants, pools and Jacuzzis just a few steps away from the beach.
The beaches are arguably Rosarito's most impressive feature. The white shoreline is flat and wide, and the water is some of the clearest in the region. Many head to Rosarito to enjoy the incredible surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, camping and fishing opportunities that are available. Music is often played on the beaches, but you can easily avoid that if you wish for a quiet atmosphere as the majestic beach goes on for 20 miles.
Boulevard Benito Juarez
This area is home to many of the clubs and restaurants that Rosarito is known for. Papas & Beer, the West Coast's largest beach club, has been a go-to place in Rosarito since 1988. The famous Rosarito Beach Hotel is also located here; entertainers who have stayed in these prestigious accommodations include Orson Welles and Marilyn Monroe. Live events are regularly held here as well. Boulevard Benito Juarez is also home to several fun places to go shopping. The Mexican furniture found here is especially sought-after.
Those who enjoy lobster are encouraged to take a brief 10-mile trip further south to Puerto Nuevo as the freshly caught and prepared lobster that is regularly enjoyed here can only be described as sublime. Impressively, this community of 135 people is home to nearly 40 restaurants that focus on lobster dishes.
Rosarito-Ensenada bike rides
A pair of Rosarito-Ensenada bike rides take place around May 1 and October 1. The first 35 miles of the 50-mile journey consist of a scenic coastal ride, before the course cuts inland for the rest of the journey along rolling hills adjacent to peaceful farms. A party then awaits the thousands of riders at the finish line in Ensenada.
Rosarito-Puerto Nuevo Half Marathon
Those who would rather explore the beautiful road between Rosarito and Puerto Nuevo at a slower pace are encouraged to enter this event, which takes place in the fall. Many finishers reward themselves with a tasty lobster meal after the race.
The regional climate greatly contributes to Rosarito's popularity; it is generally comfortable to be outside at any point in the year. High temperatures in the summer are in the mid-70s, while the average high in January is 66 degrees.
