The rooms are old and they show their age but they are huge, some with wrap around balconies. My suite had a bedroom, two bathrooms, and a living room/kitchen area. Maid service every day brought fresh towels and linens. You have to provide your own dish soap/dish towels for the kitchen. They provide cups, bowls, plates, utensils, frying pans, and pots. You check in at the Encino. There are 3 dipping pools on the roof. Excellent, central location right next to the river and a block from the Malecon. There was no AC in my suite but the fans were very powerful. Most days I had wifi in my room but it did cut out for a couple days. The staff at the Encino are very friendly and helpful.
Okay, okay, okay. I know, I gave this property a 5 star rating. I have a different standard. I rate hotels I stay by affordability vs. location vs. rooms. I have other criteria for judging a property, but in this case the Suites Plaza del RIo met all my expectations. The Suites Plaza is a sister property to the EL Encino Hotel. The room was older but clean, just like the Encino. The suite had two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It also had a living room and a kitchen with a fridge It was a little apartment type room. I could see myself living in a space like this very comfortably The Suites Plaza, like the Encino, is centrally located in the heart of the malecon. Everything was within walking distance. At least within walking distance of what I like to do in and around Vallarta. The hotel isn't a resort style property. It doesn't have the ameneties a resort has. Think of it as place you can stash your things while you are out and about. The price for my 5 night stay was a total of $370! They always have deals on all the travel sites. The place is family friendly. Meaning, there's a lot kids running around making noise. Not to worry, you are not gonna be spending a lot of time in the room except to sleep. It's within walking distance of the beach. There's no need to take a cab because everything is within reach. I did not spend anytime in the pool, I didn't even go up to the rooftop to see the pool. I don't go Puerto Vallarta for that. I go to eat, smoke cigars, and drink. Yeah, sometimes not in that order, lol. All in all, the property is well maintained but don't expect luxury. As I've said before, I rather spend the money I would spend on a luxury hotel on my food and drinks. I recommend a stay, but only if you are an experienced traveler who see's the value of place like this. Not people who are looking for infinity pools and beach front rooms. I went to puerto vallarta on 04/20 thru 04/25.
We have just returned from our 8th year spending 3 months at the Plaza del Rio suites...and what can I say, another happy amazing stay, it is always like coming home....many of us in the suites return year after year and have become a family....and the staff are amazing and lovely people...Imelda, Maria and Carolina who look after our suites, Rene who does any repairs we may need just whenever we ask, fernando the happiest friendliest receptionist, where nothing is any trouble to him....and Claudia who arranges all our bookings, and deals with any problems and will aim to help in anyway possible....this is what brings us back year after year, the apartments are so clean comfortable and the roof area is a great meeting place for all....we love coming home to PV and these suites are our home away from home....a huge thank you to you all and see you next year god willing. Xxxxx
Not everyone gets the same rules Must book 3 months???? not everyone? --- to be sure every suite has many ants and most have sewer smell from shower drain --- noise from tour bus for sure and if you cancel no credit even if your room is used/booked by someone else -- internet is poor and weak --- every thing no problem we fix BULL
We stayed there for the last two weeks in January 2017. The location to the Melacone, beach, shops, etc was very good. The condition of the rooms was good and the room was clean. The suite came equipped with the bare cooking essential, but did not include any kitchen hand towels or soap to wash dishes (better bring paper towels and dish soap). The Internet connection was poor very poor. Told the front desk on two occasions that we could not connect to the Internet, front desk knew but nothing was done, had to go to local restaurant that had Wi-Fi to be able to connect. Overall price was very good with location being a plus. Maid service was every day, shower was good and bed was comfortable once you got over the concrete base the mattress sat on (this is pretty much true for majority of places we have stayed in PV). Rooftop pool is really a wading pool. Lounge chairs are comfortable.
Situated on the Rio Cuale, at night you can her wonderful live music from River Cafe, and it is loud, but only til 10pm. Lack of air conditioning wasnt a problem in January. Maid service is fairly good, and reliable. We tipped her a little each day. I especially liked going to the roof pool to get sun and read (and maybe nap a little). Management was very quick to respond when we had an issue with the restroom. Will definitely check here first on my next trip to Vallarta.
The good: Great location, Malecon within 5 minute walking distance. Good restaurants across bridge to the South, about a 10 minute walk. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort and overlook the cleanliness, it's good deal due to the location. Don't expect an upscale hotel. It is an old hotel, to be fair, keep this in mind. I chose this place since I needed a place on short notice, this was the best I could find, location-wise. The bad: Found hairs and bugs in one of the beds, so kids decided to sleep on the sofas in the living area. A toothbrush was in the bathroom trash, some paper on the floor. Some sand found on the sofa. So cleanliness was certainly not up to par. There's no sign at the entrance indicating the hotel's location, you have to check in at Hotel Encino around the corner. You pretty much have no choice but to park in the garage across the street if you have your own vehicle, so be aware of this. Beds were hard, not comfortable, but I was tired enough it didn't matter too much. Be sure to check the beds, bathrooms and overall cleanliness when they do the pre-inspection if you do stay here. Noise in the hallways is very noticeable. Would I stay here again? No, unless my options were limited. However, if the rooms were as clean as they should be, it wouldn’t be so bad considering the price and location. I’d overlook the hard beds and give this place four stars.
This was a change for us. We usually do all-inclusive resorts, but were looking for a change of pace. This fit the bill. The suites are spacious. We had a one bedroom junior suite with a kitchen. We cooked a couple of meals and had all the utensils, pots etc. to do so. Full size clean fridge, gas cook top, micro, etc. The bedroom was large with a king bed and lots of closet space. Bed was firmer than we were used to, but we got used to it and slept well. Bathroom was small, with a shower only but clean and adequate. Living room was large with 2 cement style couches with Mexican print cushions and a couple of tables. New flat screen smart TV and new ceiling fans in living room and bedroom. No AC, but with the fans it was not needed. The roof top pools were awesome. Most days we would head out in the morning to do some exploring and return in the afternoon for drinks around the pools. Many times we were the only people up there. Pools are like large jaccuzies, with no heat. they were the perfect temperature to bring the body heat down. The view from up there was great also. Best thing about this place is the fantastic location. Close to Old town, Malecon, great restaurants and bars and shopping. Walking distance to everything. Staff were nice. Mostly Spanish speaking only, but we had fun communicating and usually got our message across. Wifi was down for the first 4 days of our stay, so had to go to Encino lobby to keep in touch. They finally got it fixed and then we had very strong signals in our room. So all good. If you are looking for a clean no frills suite in a great location then you really can't go wrong staying here. Did I mention the pools...wonderful!
We loved this area which seemed like a neighborhood nestled between Zona romantica, the central zone, and the beach. Just perfect!!!! A little tough to find at first.... But just keep asking and you'll get there!!
Originally, we were considering staying at hotel Encino, a sister hotel of Suites Plaza del Rio that is located just around the corner in the next block along Rio Cuale, and then we made a reservation here based on Trip Advisor’s favorable reviews of the studios with balconies facing Rio Cuale. Indeed, we recommend to request a studio with the view of the river, as we enjoyed watching the life on the street while sitting there. Please note that these two sister hotels share the reception which is located at hotel Encino, so if you need anything, you will need to walk outside on the street and to the next block to hotel Encino. Hotel Suites Plaza del Rio is an average place. The rooms were kept clean and we definitely had a lot of space in the studio that included the kitchen. Interestingly, the kitchen did not contain matches, and when I asked for them, was told they are not included. : ) Mainly, this hotel did not have a lot of the charming character that some of similar price hotels in historical PV district offer, and there was the added hassle of having to walk to the other hotel to reception, to get there the free coffee in the morning, etc. So we will not be back.
