It was not easy getting in my room !! No lift bad smell . When I entered the room no toilet or bathroom. Couldn’t stay . And till today no refund
Great value. Quaint Victorian Inn. It’s like stepping back in time. Total opposite of the chain hotels that all look alike.
If you are limited in climbing stairs, do not book. There is no elevator and the stairs are narrow & high stepping. The Hotel itself is really neat. Felt like I went back in time. The shared shower was tiny and parking is very limited.
This was a great value. We stayed one night. Staff was welcoming and friendly. Their lot was full so they allowed us to park in the street in front of the hotel.
Very nice people and the room was clean, if very small. Had an early hospital appointment, so this was extremely close and convenient, but the neighborhood is not somewhere I would visit normally. Breakfast was fine, and a nice addition, and the price was right, so I would recommend for someone else going to the hospital at 5:am.
Gorgeous old-style hotel, complete with authentic Tiffany stained glass lamps. Very warm welcome at front desk, plus hot coffee/tea and cookies 24/7. The room is like Grandma's but better, with lots of electric/USB outlets. Bathroom is in the hall, but it's very quiet here, more like a B&B so you don't bump into other people outside your room. Nice bathrobes are provided so you don't have to scamper down the hall in your tighty whiteys. I'll be back.
The room was clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The location is great for being close to many things to do and close to the airport. Staff is very friendly and kind. The building is very cool/antique look. The only downfall for our stay was that our room was on main level directly backed up to the common cafe area so you can hear everyone in the morning in the cafe area loudly. The food/snack options are healthy and great. Overall happy with stay and would go back, i would only request not to have to room next to the cafe.
Nice old building in very good shape. Limited food choice and seating space for breakfast. A bit of a (1/2 mile) walk to more shops and restaurants. However, for the price, I like Inn at St John
Interesting building. Great staff. Shared hallway bathroom was clean and never occupied - only a few rooms sharing it.
Wonderful decor, very quiet, welcoming staff, all-around comfortable stay.
Nice old Inn. D very cozy.
I was nervous about heading here sight unseen, and the prices were very low compared to other options. Old style inn, almost historic. I like how they left it all original and embrace the "Inn" feel. Staff were professional and appear to enjoy working there. Room was old style, but very clean and well appointed. They even had mints for me. I will definitely go back when next in Portland, ME.
Such a nice place! My room was beautiful and spacious and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Thank you!

Bradley, we appreciate a lot of the points you brought up, as feedback is always helpful, and we get the opportunity to respond with information that other potential guests are able to see and benefit from.First, thank you for your positive rating as well as the compliments such as your note on the inn's cleanliness, which we highly value.Unfortunately, with the Inn at St. John being over 100 years old with unique architecture, management has not been able to add an elevator. Still, we do our best to accommodate guests who have any difficulties with stairs by guaranteeing lobby level rooms upon request and if available, as well as assisting with carrying luggage upstairs when possible for staff. We also offer a variety of rooms with different bathroom styles, including rooms with different sized beds and private in-room baths, larger than what you had booked. In regards to parking, along with the small parking lot directly behind the inn, there are additional spots at Union Station Plaza. Only some of the parking spaces in that plaza (about a 5-minute walk from the inn) can be used by guests. They can be identified by the word "reserved" being visible along with cement barricades. and the parking passes we provide must be visible from the guest's car. Street parking is available as well, but parking passes provided by the inn are not usable for this, and guests must pay attention to street signs and parking laws.We hope this information was helpful, especially in the case that you kindly choose the Inn at St. John as your place of stay if/when you visit the Portland area again.

Hi Allison,It's great to hear that you found our rates reasonable and staff friendly. Yes, our on-site parking lot is a bit small and can fill up on busy nights, but just as you found parking, there is plenty of available parking for guests. But it's very important to know that actually the Inn at St. John CANNOT guarantee/provide street parking. We can sometimes offer information on street parking pertaining to the specific night, such as either side of Valley Street having available space for parking with no risk of being ticketed or towed at this time in the year. Parking passes we provide are only usable for the parking lot directly behind the inn along with the spaces we rent at Union Station Plaza (our off-site parking option). If a guest ever needs to park at Union Station Plaza, specific details can be provided at that time.Thank you again for the kind review, as well as the opportunity for us to give the previously stated information on parking, which we hope you'll be using in the future... as we'd love to have you choose the Inn at St. John if visiting Portland again anytime in the future.
Thanks so much for taking the time to rate us. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope you keep us in mind for any future visits to Portland!

While we love being a memorable part of a guest's vacation, we also really appreciate knowing how we can be a useful source for more serious matters, such as those involving the nearby hospital. You are one of many guests who have chosen to stay here due to our very short distance from the hospital, and we are happy it was satisfactory for you.
Thank you for the 5 out of 5 rating!

Thanks so much for all of the kind words. We look forward to seeing you again.
Thank you Scott for the kind review, as we appreciate you taking notice of and enjoying the inn's historic and Victorian style, which we do our best to preserve throughout the years, as the inn was originally built in 1897. We completely agree with your comment, describing the Inn at St. John as being the "Total opposite of the chain hotels that all look look alike." And we love hearing positive remarks such as "It's like stepping back in time." We'd love to have you back for a visit in the future.
