Holiday Inn Panama Canal3.0 out of 5.0

We spent a week at the Holiday Inn. Booked it for the canal view but when got there it was a tree view with minimal canal view though we paid extra for the view. Did have a good view each day from the dining room at breakfast. The shuttle to airport only goes once a day and not close to our flight times. This hotel is a 45 minute taxi ride for $50 one way for 4 of us.The taxis are great even with our little spanish. The front desk was great with helping get taxis. Breakfast is fabulous. Our in room safe wouldn't open the day before we left but maintaince got it open for our passports.
We felt safe and staff was very helpful. Close to the Miraflores Locks and we could watch the ships from our window. Nice to cool off in the pool after a day seeing the sights. There was a great breakfast included and we ate dinner here as well and the meal was great and reasonably priced.
The hotel is well located near the Panama Canal with great view of ships and vessels passing by the Canal. Nice service, good food, and well clean room. Only I would say that would be excelent with a bigger pool.
Our group of six were in Panama for a 2 day whirlwind trip of the canal and some sightseeing. We choose the Holiday Inn for its superior location to the Mirafloras Locks. The hotel was undergoing small repairs (we didn't ever see anyone actually working on the wall repairs - only the plaster spots on the walls in the hallways) but the rooms were reasonable size and the a/c worked well to keep us comfortable in the humidity. This is certainly not a "luxury resort" but it has a good breakfast buffet available and the rooms were clean enough. When making the reservation we were advised that a king bed could be requested but could not be confirmed. We were originally checked into a room that had not been prepared (two doubles) and we went back to the desk and were moved up a floor to a king sized bed room. We had also chosen to stay on the "Lock view" side. We had one group on the second floor, one on the third and one group on the fifth floor. The trees in front of the hotel almost completely blocked the views from the second and third floor and the group on the fifth (of 6) floors could just see over the trees out to the locks. It probably wasn't worth the additional money for the lower floor non existent views. (the higher floors gave a view to the old and to the new locks though) The staff were polite and accommodating and most were fluent in English (as we are not fluent in Spanish). We had prepaid for our stay with the breakfast option included and they did not ask for a credit card at check in which caused an issue when we ordered dinner and couldn't charge our orders to our rooms. We had to pay cash or credit card on delivery of our food to our room and before leaving the bar. The location is well outside the city and is therefore very peaceful at night and felt safe. There was another restaurant next door for a change of menu and a taxi stand immediately outside the hotel on the main road. The pool was small but looked inviting and poolside towels were provided. The hallways have a "musty" smell that most tropical, humid locations have as there is no constant air conditioning supplied to the halls. The rooms were not affected with the smell as we had our a/c running. We were not awakened by noises in other rooms or the hallways. We have concluded that this location was perfect for our purposes. We were stunned by the traffic gridlock in Panama City and rarely had to deal with it by staying out near the locks. It is also very close to the Panama Railway that travels to Colon each morning at 7:15am. We would probably choose this location again if planning another trip to Panama.
A great place to stay, perfect rooms and the view of the Panama canal and approach to Miraflores locks is spectacular, especially from the higher floored rooms. However: BEWARE, I booked and paid for two rooms which included breakfast. Upon arrival they knew nothing about breakfast and charged for this. When questioned about the charge, the manager appears and suddenly the ability to understand clear English is gone, blank looks - but they understand money! They are a pack of dodgey shonkey operators and I'd now avoid this hotel at all cost owing to their deceptive practices and procedures.
I arrived at the Holiday Inn Panama Canal Hotel in the afternoon and was warmly greeted by Edgar. He was so helpful at the Front Desk and definitely made me feel special. When someone else interrupted us, he told them that he was busy helping this VIP. Further, as an IHG Platinum Rewards Member, I was upgraded to the suite on the top floor. Wonderful. I also got bottled water as a welcome amenity. My room was great. The elevator doors open up on the top floor and then the room is right there. Open the door and there is a great living area. Even a shoe polisher in the closet. Then the way gives to a large bedroom. The bed was comfy. There were also lots of electrical outlets. I used the desk when I need to be on my laptop. The wardrobe was sufficient. The bathroom was starting to feel dated. Speaking of which, everyday there was a different number of towels left in the bathroom. I wondered why. The floor is not carpeted but tiled and my socks got dirty and so did my bare feet when walking about the room. I am not sure how easy it is to clean tile but this is something that could be looked into. Finally, the light switches made no sense. Too many switches and then sometimes you had to turn the switch on/off on the lamp/light too, in addition to the switch. So there is room for improvement. Had dinner in the restaurant twice. Service seemed slow, maybe because I am a polite Canadian and maybe just the relaxed atmosphere. Non-alcoholic drinks seemed expensive. The service at the Front Desk was very helpful in assisting me with my travel plans each day. This service at the Front Desk is the highlight of the hotel. Wifi was fast enough. The air conditioner worked well, in terms of cooling the room, but the switches again were complicated in that it seemed hard to figure out how to operate. This should be easy. I gave up enough that I just unplugged and plugged in the unit when I needed it. All in all there is room for improvement at this hotel but the service at the Front Desk allowed me to overlook some of the minor hiccups. Although this hotel is not near downtown, to which my taxi expenses were over budget as a result, I still would consider returning here on a future trip to Panama. The recognition for IHG Members was much appreciated.
This was our first night in Panama. Hotel was quiet, clean and comfortable. The canal is right there but really no view at all. We were able to walk down closer to it but decided that it was too dark.
This is an option in case you need to stay close to the ciudad del saber. The rooms are old and not taken care. The services are efficient (including cash advance and shuttles to Miraflores) bar food is reasonable, breakfast is just basic.
This is probably our at least 5th time staying here....probably more. We arrived today purposely almost 1 1/2 hours after check in time, only to be told the room was not ready. We didn't see hardly any vehicles in the parking lot, so guessing there were plenty of rooms that could have been ready. The guy got right on it...I guess, and got us checked in. However, when we went to the room, there was a dirty towel hanging in the shower. Hmmmm. I climbed into bed and found the sheets didn't even reach the edge of the bed....missed it by a good 8-10"! So any time I move, it moves further away and my legs have been caught up in it several times, making it difficult to sleep. The beds are very comfortable, so that's a plus. Not our best hotel stay, for sure.
Superb Hotel, Very friendly staff. I was immediately upgraded to a room overlooking the Panama Canal. Incredible views of the ocean liners passing through the Canal. Room was spacious with a 32in TV and all the amenities provided by the IHG group of hotels.
