Stopped here while driving across the country. All I wanted was a good night's sleep before I hit the road again. Specifically asked for a quiet room. Throughout the night I heard the patrons of the bar next door leaving (loudly) and both trains and trucks. Needless to say, I did not get a good night's sleep and won't be staying here again.

Loved the Hotel, nice room's, great internet, great pool and hot tub large enough for several people, you were not on top of each other. The beds were awesome, I usually hate to travel because my back hurts so bad from the beds, but not these, absolutely wonderful! Didn't get to have breakfast had to leave to early! Rooms very modern and updated, clean and fresh. Definitely would stay again.

Very accommodating. The breakfast room staff was very friendly. Also I was early and desk clerk got me into a room right away I liked the access to restaurants near by. All amenities in driving distance. Access to I 94 and I80

This hotel is an easy on/off the toll road. I have stayed here a couple of times when attending Notre Dame football games. It is wonderful to not have to pay a two night minimum on football weekends as you do closer to ND. The staff is friendly and helpful and makes check in and out very easy. The building is always clean, there are comfy beds and pillows, and a great breakfast from my point of view. The beds and the breakfast are the two main reasons I stay Holiday Inn Express. However, this location is very dated compared to most other Holiday Inn Express locations I have stayed at. It is clean and well taken care from what I see but just has an old feel to it. The "dining" area is truly too small and on game weekends it is always packed to overflowing. The staff does a great job keeping food and beverage stocked but you are constantly bumping into people trying to sit and eat. The small physical space makes it hard to enjoy breakfast.

I have very mixed emotions about this place. There are pluses and minuses that need to be weighed before one decides to stay here. First, it is expensive for what you get. The hotel is somewhat old although it is well-maintained and it looks as if the carpeting and other things have been recently replaced throughout. The room has the requisite small refrigerator and microwave as well as a Keurig coffee maker. It also boasts a flat screen TV and a small desk. The bed was very comfortable as were the linens. The room suffers from the usual lack of electrical outlets common to older venues. The indoor pool is small and there is a one computer public access, I suppose you could say business center, in the lobby where everybody can see what you are doing. There is an exercise room as well. High speed WiFi is available for free but annoyingly enough one has to sign in everytime you leave for any amount of time. One thing that I consider a terrific plus is that management has installed LED light bulbs in the rooms instead of those under wattage CFC fluorescents. Another plus is that breakfast although advertised as beginning at 6:30, actually starts around 5:30 which is great for those of us who have to be out early. On the minus side they still haven't gotten rid of that stupid one-person self serve hot food bar. As there are many people here that work for a living and have to be out early it gets very congested when three or four people line up attempting to get food from one extremely small place. You would think that Holiday Inn corporate would have learned by now that this is not an acceptable situation. The food is pretty much the standard of what one gets at a Holiday Inn Express if the selection is a little bit more on the sparse side than usual. The staff is friendly and helpful. The place is quiet. On the minus side, in my opinion the place is unbelievably expensive for what it offers and where it is located. There are other more modern venues in the area at far more reasonable prices. The hotel also does not offer decent discounts for Triple-A, AARP or other memberships. On my first night here the maid did not replace the toilet paper rolls or the coffee pods. The bathroom is clean and of adequate size. The daily cleaning in so far as vacuuming could use a bit more attention. The room darkening drapes had several small wear holes in them. Would I stay here again? Possibly, but despite my Elite status with Holiday Inns I would be tempted to look for a more modern and cheaper accommodation that had some of the same perks that I consider important.

I have been a Holiday Inn Express supporter with several recent satisfied stays, but this was about as bad as it gets. My wife and I had a reservation for a king suite for one night in July at the Holiday Inn Express in Portage, IN. We were traveling through, and also wanted to spend some time visiting the Indiana Dunes State Park. The room we received was heavily perfumed with an apparent attempt to cover up the smoke odor in a non-smoking room. Furniture in room was so old and dirty there is no way it could be cleaned - just throw it away. Carpeting was damp from attempt at cleaning but still stained and again just needs replaced. Front desk was accommodating in finding an alternative room, which really wasn't much cleaner but didn't have the odor. While acknowledging the dirt, they did note the mattresses had recently been replaced. When asked, the staff offered to provide a sheet to cover the side chair in the room so we could use it, but they never delivered the sheet. While the hotel offered breakfast, it wasn't up to the usual standard I have experienced at other Holiday Inns and the room was again filthy. It appeared the coffee crafts hadn't been cleaned in quite a while with old dried coffee stains running down the sides and bottom. We were unable to reach the front desk with the phone in either room. Other guests on elevator confirmed they couldn't reach anyone with the phone in their rooms (probably a good strategy by hotel management so they would not have to deal with all the complaints). Went to front desk and was told they could swap it out with one of the phones from a dirty room which I declined. We had been moved to a first floor room after the first room was rejected so I was at least able to walk back and forth to the front desk trying to get a remote for the TV that actually worked. Hydraulics on office chair in room was broken and wouldn't lift. Besides being dirty, the springs in all of the chairs were broken down. Just stay away from this hotel, and you'd also be better off staying in another area such as Chesterton, just a few miles East of Portage, where there are more eating options. Recommend the Craft House in Chesterton for dining.

Stayed here one night driving thru Indiana on our way back to New York. There were not many hotel choices in this area so we booked via IHG as we are rewards members. The facility was just OK and I feel $170.00 per night with AAA discount was too high.

We stayed here overnight on our way to Michigan. The staff was great, I was upgraded to a nice clean, well kept room with a great bed and a great shower. HI Express has the best breakfasts in the business, and this hotel did not disappoint. I will certainly stay here again. You should too.

The first night I was in a tornado watch. The hotel was laid out nicely for emergencies if needed. The beds were comfortable and the room thermostat was easy to control. The hotel was tucked away in a quiet corner away from the freeway and city. Close to restaurants and the university. I would definitely stay here again

Absolutely love this hotel. My 7 year old enjoys their kids pool and game room. Easy access to the highway and restaurants. Clean and friendly staff. Rooms are also spacious and clean. Parking is easily assessable. Always snacks at the check in. Highly recommended for a weekend stay.
