Whitney Inn & Suites2.0 out of 5.0

Door seal was broken letting in unwanted road noise, as well as walls being thin enough to hear our neighbors fighting. Called front desk to ask if we could change rooms and was told no other rooms are available. My girlfriend and I did not feel safe at this motel and left to go to another. I was never fully reimbursed for our inconvenience.
Went from a national chain to privately owned. Slowly renovating rooms. Halls, stairs and doors are all very old. Room was surprisingly nice, king bed was very comfortable and the highest bed I have ever slept in. Small fridge, microwave, flat screen, free wi-fi and continental breakfast included in room rate. Location is on a busy street to get a room in rear to avoid excessive noise.
Cheap rates and convenient location was what got me here. Plus side: No visible bugs, maintenance was nice and good location. Cons: Mildew smell, sketchy feel and furniture, oh and there were hairs on my pillow. When I asked at the desk for housekeeping to please adequately clean, they changed the one pillow but didn't bother with anything else. Did not want to stay in the room solo. Good place for seedy dealings and perhaps hiding from the police.
The Whitney Inn and Suites is a sprawling old building. It appears that the family owners are working hard to update it. Our room on the second floor rear was totally updated and clean. The bedding was all new and the bathroom was spotless. The hallway rug, however, was dark and needed cleaning. Hopefully the family is addressing the common areas. I can't speak for the lower level motel-style rooms that face the main road, but we did have a great night's sleep in our room. The adequate breakfast buffet is an added bonus to start the day. Great location for visiting Quinnipiac.
DO NOT waste your money at this DUMPY, SMELLY Motel. The miserable, grumpy woman on reception is the last type of person who should be greeting paying customers at a motel. Walked into reception and the dirty smell is enough to put you off, and that is where the free brekkie is offered, will NOT be eating anything at this motel. The owners should be ashamed of the room we had. Mould on walls, badly stained bedcover, baby seat under the table and two bags of STUFF behind the door? Flushed the toilet and it overflowed onto the floor???? Went back to reception to request a refund. Another woman was on reception and offered a nicer room? I said you have nicer rooms ? Why would you put anyone in that room if you had nicer rooms? Went and checked out the 'Nicer room', which was clean & tidy.
Right off the main road. You could hear traffic but with the a/c on it wasn't bad at all. The room was nice and clean but the bathroom was very dated and had places in the tile grout and seems that had questionable spots. The breakfast was plain and did not have many options but the area was clean and the food available was good. I would stay here again if passing through.
I was very hesitant about staying at the Whitney Inn and Suites because of its ratings but was very pleasantly surprised how nice the accommodations were. Room was VERY clean (even took a black light to check the room for bed bugs and organic matter). We had a suite on the second floor that was VERY spacious, the bed was extremely comfortable with 4 pillows, a nice size refrigerator in the TV cabinet, a microwave and drip coffee machine with coffee. Heating/cooling system worked like a charm. Great value for two very good nights sleep without paying for a whole lot of unnecessary 'bells and whistles'! On the down side, albeit minor but still worth mentioning, the ice maker in our building was not working and there is no elevator to the second floor, stairs only (bad knees beware). There are, however, many more rooms on the first floor (no stairs). We understand that renovations are in progress to improve the Whitney so we plan on staying there for all our future college visits.
Got the king suite on the second floor. More like a hotel than motel room up there. Not great but not terrible. Best you can get in Hamden. Recommend but don't have high expectations. Bathroom was a little dirty some stains on different things. Bathroom did not get cleaned between nights.
We stayed here based on the newer reviews. Glad we did! The price was right and we had no complaints. It is obvious the owners have sunk a substantial amount of money into this facility. Everything in our room (218) seemed new. If the owners renovate the lobby and put a little more effort into the continental breakfast, I see no reason why this place wouldn't have a "No Vacancy" sign lit on a regular basis. Very comfortable stay, super close to Quinnipiac.
This was a return visit following a very satisfactory visit last year when it was a Days Inn and we were again very happy with the room and its facilities. I had read a few unfavourable reviews which were posted since our visit last year, but decided to trust to last year's experience and am glad I did. Room was clean and a good size, bathroom and shower huge, bed very comfortable. Staff were friendly, I have no complaints at all.
