Candlewood Suites Montgomery- North2.5 out of 5.0

The best thing about this hotel is its proximity to the nearby Eastchase shopping and dining complex, however we suggest there may be many better nearby choices. This hotel has maintenance problems (see photos of burnt out light bulbs, broken door, and lock falling off entrance door), and the staff, as friendly as they may be, obviously lack training in the art of diplomacy and guest relations. As with all Candlewood Suites, there is no breakfast, either free or otherwise. We scouted nearby hotels a bit, and - for the sake of location, price, and maintenance issues - the next time we are in the area we intend to stay elsewhere.
This was my first time staying at a Candlewood Suites property. My family and I booked a double bed studio suite- and considering it was our first time, it was a pretty decent stay. There is a walking pathway for guests with dogs as well as a few grills for Bar-B-Quing. In addition, Candlewood offered a "lending library" sort of exchange system, where guests could borrow board games, blenders, and other items of the sort (I thought this was very neat!). The kitchen in the room was fully stocked with a microwave, full-size fridge, stove top, dishwasher, toaster, garbage disposal, dishes, and utensils. The cable in the room offered MORE channels than any other hotel I have ever been to- offering at least 300 channels. Hotel is in walking distance to a Cracker Barrel and ice cream shop with very many restaurants and shops in very close proximity. As mentioned in other reviews- there is no breakfast included nor a pool. Prior to coming, we were aware of these two items, but were also told that there was a connection with Holiday Inn where guests could go to their pool- however, this was invalid. The "business center" only had one computer, but it offered free laundry services, which was an added bonus.
We booked wheelchair accessible room during our family trip. We stayed in this hotel for 5 days. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. This is an extended stay hotel and housekeeping is only done once a week, however the house keeping staff was very helpful with all items we needed. Housekeeping and maintenance staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was clean upon arrival.
Too bad we had to give this place a star. They sure don't deserve one Stay away from here !!!! It all began at the check-in counter that was manned by 3 girls that couldn't even begin to think for themselves and had absolutely NO personality. The one that was checking us in spent a little time on the computer only to inform us that it wouldn't accept my wife's Visa. We told her that we weren't paying with the card, we only used it to hold the room and that we were going to pay cash. A few more minutes on the computer (and a secret conference with her 2 co-workers) and she informed us once again that the computer would not accept my wife's card. My wife asked me to go retrieve my card from our vehicle. I went outside to get my card. Upon my return our check in clerk came out of a back office to inform us that we would need to pay cash to get our room for the night !!!! I asked if there was a pool available and was told (rather rudely) that they had no pool. I then asked about their breakfast and was told (again) that there was NO breakfast. I inquired as to why and was told that this was an extended stay hotel and there were facilities in our room to cook our own breakfast !!! I guess extended stay patrons don't have the privilege of swimming or enjoying a simple continental breakfast. How cheap can these people be ?? Finally arrived at our room put the key in the door and had to ram the door with my shoulder to get it open. It was badly bent. After unpacking it was beginning to get cold in the room. I turned the thermostat down ( there was a small sign above the thermostat stating that it would take the air conditioner at least 15 minutes to readjust). After an hour of further freezing we finally had to shut the unit off. Then as it got hot in the room we had to turn it back on. Did this 2 - 3 times during the night. It was the WORST bed we had ever slept on. May as well put a slab of cement in the room and put a blow up mattress on it. Terrible. This room was referred to as a suite ! Ha. I've seen pig sty's bigger than this. What a joke... The final straw was when we left the room the following morning to go retrieve some food at the nearest restaurant, the house maid passed us in the hall, turned around and inquired as to whether we were leaving or not !! Like she couldn't wait to get in our room. Believe me we were happy when we did leave ! We normally stay at the LaQuinta chain of hotels and will do so from now on. They are a much better facility AND at a lot lower rate. This place stinks.
If you're looking for a place to stop on the way to the beach for a great deal then this is it! :) It also accommodates a great deal of military due to the surroundings which makes it that much more perfect for us! The room we stayed in had a full kitchenette setup perfect to make meals if you are staying long term. The dishes are provided and they even have a dishwasher. The lending closet would make it perfect to borrow things from for meals you what to make a certain way or even to play some games with family or friends! :) You won't regret your stay here. Also, the staff here is very friendly which means a lot in this day and time!
We were on the second floor and the room was nice and comfortable.....plenty of utensils......the only downside thing was the sound from water pipes when the showers were on in other units.....otherwise no prob
Super friendly staff at the front desk made our stay here wonderful. The facility itself is nice but the staff are outstanding. Never stayed at a Candlewood before but would do it again without hesitation.
The front desk worker was outstanding and the room was great as well. I would recommend this hotel to everyone coming into Montgomery, Alabama. The location is easy to access from Interstate 85 and there is a Cracker Barrel close by if you want to eat Breakfast before you hit the road.
Booked our room at the last minute on Priceline. Got a decent deal. Room was clean and bed was nice. loved the kitchen!!! Be sure too book exactly which room you want or you will be give a "standard room" - which means, whatever is left over of a single queen bed.
I am an emergency services canine handler. On a recent trip I booked by telephone, advised the clerk taking my call that was traveling with my canine partner and checked in with the same clerk two days later. I was never advised that there would be a pet fee of $75 assessed but found out during checkout. The manager never contacted me nor did IHG ever respond to me with a follow up within the time line that they established. NEVER stay here. They may stick it to you as well with an unposted fee.
