My husband and I travel a tremendous amount, and have recently stayed in some very nice properties. We were excited to stay at the Principal, as they are a Design Hotel (which we have recently discovered), and part of the SPG for points. As we had stayed at a Design Hotel in France last month, our expectations were quite high that the Principal would be of the same quality. Sadly, this was not the case. The hotel itself is lovely, and the rooms are clean, but for the price they charge, we were disappointed. The service was also not consistent. There were exceptional people that gave great service, and than others that did not. We had a couple problems with our room, and I had asked if we could check out, as I found a fabulous hotel down the road that was quite a lot less per night. The Customer Service Manager, Jakob, was excellent, and apologized for our concerns, and instead of having us leave, upgraded us. Again, the room was lovely. I rated the hotel very good, because they truly did try to meet our expectations, although not perfect, they made a great effort.
Principal Madrid's ideal location and unparalled service make it an easy 5 Star hotel. Access to shopping, museums/attractions and minutes walk to amazing restaurants made our stay unforgettable. The entire staff was friendly, accommodating, and truly embodied customer service. OUr choice hotel when we visit Madrid
A very nice hotel decorated in a tasteful and modern style in a fabulous location. Enjoyed a chilled glass of wine or two on the terrace by the bar on the 6th floor in the Spring sun. Staff very helpful and recommended two amazing restaurants. My only criticism is the price .. more expensive than London for the size of the room .. bed was brilliant just quite a small room overall for the money. This is the view from the terrace ..
We rarely stay in the same hotel in subsequent visits to major cities, preferring to explore different neighborhoods and styles. But in Madrid, we just completed our fifth stay in this extremely well-located hotel, with excellent service and very comfortable accommodations. The staff is personal, friendly and helpful. The view from the roof is spectacular. There are a variety of room styles, including some that command the centerpoint of the hotel. Excellent restaurant (better for dinner, but also a decent breakfast selection). Transfers to/from the airport in their own car (they charge, but it's reasonable). The crowd is a little Hollywood, but if you avoid the bar/lounge, that won't be a problem. Elevators are very small, but there are three/four of them available during busy checkout times. We will return.
Stayed at The Principal 3 nights. Location is prime, close to all major attractions. We were upgraded upon arrival to a very nice room on the 5th floor overlooking Gran Via and the Metropolis building. All amenities required were there and it was pretty quiet. Very helpful concierge as well as the other staff. Excellent dinner in Atico restaurant not very expensive. Very good buffet breakfast. It was definitely a good choice and one we can recommend.
We absolutely loved everything about The Principal. The building is interesting and the interior is very stylish - solid, rich, chic and club like. The views are indeed amazing from the main (6th) floor and I also enjoyed being up on the roof terrace for a couple of hours relaxing with a book and soaking up the April rays! Loved our room, very comfortable bed and gorgeous linens and everything you could need. There were some dear little touches like 'Happy Days' sweeties. We had a yummy lunch in the restaurant Atica and the food was some of the best I have ever eaten anywhere. This place offers excellent value for money and the staff are all gorgeous and attentive.
Having stayed at this wonderful hotel following our engagement, I can’t praise it enough. From the first moment we arrived to organising airport transfers, the service was extremely professional, how a true 5 star hotel should be. In particular, the gentleman who did the check in and check out (unfortunately cannot remember the name) was impeccable. Make sure you visit the roof terrace for the best views of Madrid. We’ll be visiting again no doubt!
This hotel worked out great for us. The location was perfect - a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from both the Palacio Real and the Prado, so we felt like the things we wanted to see were very accessible. The staff were very friendly and helpful - printing us out tickets, helping us get a car to the airport, watching over our luggage, etc. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and it was lovely. The rooftop terrace is also quite nice. The rooms were decently sized for a city hotel and efficiently laid out. Would definitely recommend going forward.
That's exactly the feeling I had when I walked into the Principal. After 20 hours on a plane, it just isn't how you want to start a holiday. When I told the doorman Riko, he said he would call the cab company. When we got up to reception, the instant reaction was "sorry about your phone, we are working on it," so I handed over my passport while my partner checked in. I was offered a welcome drink and told to call my phone. I sat in the lobby and fumbled through trying to deactivate my phone and not freak out. Before the check-in was completed; one of the amazing lobby staff walked up to me and said, "here's your phone." This was pretty much the level of service you get when you stay here. There are genuine smiles and an attention to detail that seem to be lost in today's world. The hotel is small and private with top-notch service and an amazing location. The breakfast is plentiful and high-quality Victoria was there every time I turned around working like crazy to ensure everyone got what they needed without being intrusive. This isn't a massive buffet with all kinds of junk on it - it's high-quality food with a few dishes prepared upon request. If you can get a seat at lunch (it's very popular with locals) prepare to be impressed. The chocolate ball dessert is amaze-balls :) As for location, it can't be beat, walkable to everywhere you want to be in Madrid and close to the subway. It's really the place to stay in Madrid. Thank you for an amazing stay. I only mentioned two of the staff in this review, but if you are the management of the hotel, please know that absolutely everyone working during our stay was fantastic.
The first indication that The Principal was going to be a great experience was when we stepped out of the Taxi and realized we left our phone behind. Rico who greeted us immediately assisted us by calling the Taxi company. As we checked in everyone was helpful and within minutes our phone was returned. Service at the Principal is everything - courteous, attentive and polished. The hotel entrance is hidden away on a side street but steps away from the Gran Via and central to everything in the old town - Prado, Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, San Miguel Mercado, shops and restaurants. Breakfast, lunch or dinner at the hotel’s two michelin star restaurant Antico is everything you can imagine - fresh, creative, flavorful and beautifully presented. After a long day out you return to a lite lunch on the terrace and take in the sun and the surrounding views above the hustle and bustle of the city. The decor and the ambience of the hotel feels like a beautiful apartment. It is intimate even when the lounge is full and is rare. The bedroom and bathroom is well appointed, contemporary and cozy. The room has very high ceilings with heavy blackout curtains and soundproof from street noises. As much as you may want to explore the city, you will always be happy to return home and possibly never wanting to leave.
