If you are looking for a hotel that is extremely basic with no frills and well placed for the city then The College Hotel is clean and comfortable. The rooms however are very small, spartan and adhere to their college dormitory theme a little to much meaning that as a customer there is no sense of luxury whatsoever provided by the hotel. So overall the hotel despite being more than adequate left my family feeling that it was style over substance. The parking situation didn't work for us either because we didn't pre-book parking (when did you ever have to do that with a hotel) so we had to park in a local NCP equivalent, for the duration of our stay despite the booking form on the website we reserved the hotel from advertising that there is parking. OK but I suspect you can find better hotels in Lyon for similar prices.
From the minute you step into your spartan room you can imagine this being a dormitory for college goers of another era. The wardrobes are lockers, old desk and chair are your furniture. Some school books are in the shelves. Bedside tables consist of two concrete blocks. Photos of students adorn walls in hallways. But a few modern features have crept into the space with its black Japanned flooring. Air conditioning in the room and comfortable queen sized bed, remote tv and large bathroom would not have been part of a student's comforts. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Good English is spoken if your French is poor like mine. The location of the hotel couldn't be better. You can walk to everything. There is car accommodation onsite but this is an additional cost. I would definitely stay here again.
This hotel is in a good location and an excellent base for exploring the city. There are restaurants nearby for lunch, dinner or breakfast in a lovely historic setting. The hotel itself has some great design features that really bring back some old school memories. Parking was interesting (a car lift!) but spaces were adequate to fit a large vehicle. The roof terrace was also a good feature on a warm evening. Staff were also welcoming. We would certainly come back here.
The hotel is perfect for exploring the old town and the Fourvière area. The college interiors are fun. We had one of the smallest rooms, but it was perfectly comfortable. Breakfast is OK but slightly expensive. We tried it once, but then opted to go out and pick up a coffee and croissant in one of the many nearby cafés. The reception team were generally friendly, although not always easy to find. At least one of them seemed to spend much of his time standing outside on the pavement, but once we had worked out where to find him he was helpful. Wi-fi connection was a bit variable. Having water bottles in the fridges on each floor is a nice touch. We read a review saying there were free soft drinks in the fridges, but I think that time has passed.
They've taken the theme too far - and left the rooms feeling sparse to the point of bare, not to say small. In terms of price point there are quite a few options - i chose this for the parking - rightly or wrongly I wanted security as car full of luggage. (Which comes at a cost - though they all do). The part of town is the most charming area - in the medieval section - and the city is really charming - very student - guitars along the river banks. Not bad - but can't make comparisons.
The college themed, spacious rooms had a nice modern feel with bits of history woven in. The common areas of the hotel felt similar. A great value, location, and lovely place to stay in Lyon. We will be back whenever we are in town!
We were recommended the Hotel College by my niece, and we weren't disappointed. Really cool decor - the complete opposite of the over-furnished UK hotel we stayed in last month where they'd crammed in so much furniture you could hardly move in the room! The hotel is in a great location - a few minutes walk to Vieux Lyon, a quick hop across the bridge to shopping and L'Opera, and very close to the river. We went to a nearby bar and sat outside with a beer (didn't realise next door bar was part of the hotel til I noticed the logos were the same!) on the night we arrived. The roof terrace is lovely on the second floor and we hardly saw anyone else use it. Lots of tables so it was nice to take a drink up there. The staff could not have been more helpful - whether it was providing an iron or helping with a Eurostar booking. Literally my only concern was the slippery bathroom floor - it was a very lovely fully tiled wet room but got quite slippy so I asked for more bath mats. Oh and the breakfast wasn't really my cup of coffee (!) - rather sweet muesli and fruit, so we went to the boulangerie round the corner! But that's subjective and everything else was fab. Hope to be back.
We stayed at the College Hotel for a short break in Lyon. The location is perfect for the hustle and bustle of the Old Town with lots of great places to eat/drink and a short stroll from the river as well as Fourviere. Would highly recommend.
The room is at a really great location in Lyon and it's always a pleasure to stay in. The only minor issue is that where we were there months ago in the fridge some free soda where available but right now it only water ;(
We had booked to stay at their sister hotel in Lyon. On the day we were advised there was a technical difficulty and they were moving us. Not ideal as we'd specifically chosen the original hotel for easy access to the open air theatre ( we were going to s concert) and safe parking for our vehicle. To be fair the reception reorganized parking & a car to drop us at the venue, so did everything they could. The actual hotel is the reason for the 2 stars. Trying to be shabby chic, but in reality very sparse decor, no rugs, carpets, corner bath with hand held shower attachment ( no curtain / screen). Very small room. Tiny balcony too small to sit out on. Only plus was AC was super effective.
