The review below which says this is not a four star hotel gets it exactly right. The concept is quirky and imaginative and the location in the old town of Lyon, which is a spectacular city, is perfect, but that's where it ends. The website is deceiving in many respects. For example the bar is next door to the hotel and not part of it at all. The fridges on each floor were empty until we asked about the soft drinks that are promised and bottles of plain water were put in but nothing else. The four inches of frost around the freezer compartment indicated the level of neglect. The reception staff will get you a beer or a glass of wine on request but there is no where convivial to sit in the hotel. There is a lovely terrace on the second floor which is underused and you can have breakfast there if you go down to the breakfast room and carry it up two floors by yourself. As long as the terrace isn't being used for a business meeting that is. The breakfast is plentiful and fresh but the staff are badly trained and incompetent and guests have to forage around to find cutlery, plates etc. Carrying the idea of a school canteen to ridiculous lengths. The rooms are very basic with some nice decor touches but although our bed was made up and towels changed as requested, the bathroom was not cleaned in the four days we were there. The staff are pleasant and well-meaning but the hotel is badly managed, there are not enough staff and only the reception staff appear to have any level of competency. For a brilliant location and perhaps a one or two night stay, this hotel is OK but don't look for anything more than basic comfort and it is definitely NOT four star.
Very friendly staff, great ambiance and decor! Breakfast was also very good. The decor makes you feel like a schoolkid again. The hotel is also ideally located to go and explore the 'Vieux Lyon" at night.
It does not matter what price you charge (cheap/expensive) but when you advertise yourselves as 4star, I do expect in the room: bar fridge, coffee making facilities, 2 pillows per person and a bit bigger than a double bed. A room safe would have been a standard expectation too. Oh, there is a fridge in the stairwell with free water and soft drinks. If you need any during the night, just note there are no slippers or robe supplied. Dash naked or wrap yourself in a towel. Guest toiletries meager! And not replenished during your stay. We had one of the better rooms ... bath tub only with a hand shower. Want ice for your drinks - only if the pub next door is open and they'll generally give you two glasses of ice. Nice concept for the hotel décor. Nice reception area. But sadly not translated into guest comfort. If this had a 3star rating as it should have had, we would have lowered our expectations and probably chosen not to stay here. Location - can't complain about that!
We lived this quirky school-themed hotel. It was centrally situated in the old quarter so there are lots of bars and restaurants nearby. The room was clean, comfortable and well-equipped and we appreciated the free drinks available from the corridor fridge! We were also pleased to be able to park our car securely and enjoyed our first experience of a car-lift! Breakfast was delicious and plentiful and the hotel staff were all friendly and helpful.
College/school vintage theme works well. Easy to be in. Friendly helpful concierge. Great value. Lovely aspect over the city from our room 22, which had its own balcony leading on to the communal raised terrace. Room was clean and functional. Bathroom heats separately, with quiet door and lightswitch - v useful if you get up in the night. They do have rooms for meetings (great quirky classroom style) but the hotel focuses on its guests. That's how it feels. It's small enough to feel personal and attentive but big enough to just sail in and out without fuss if you want some anonymity. It's in the perfect location for Lyon, with C2 trolleybus stop a few steps from the door on sat/sun but it's not too far to walk to Cordeliers for trolleybuses or metro. Ticked all the boxes for us
We only stayed one night at the College Hotel and found it clean, quiet, comfortable. It is as others have already said very convenient to the oldest sections of town. Be sure to take the breakfast in the dining room (hall) as there are NO OTHER choices within walking distance. I wanted only a pastry and coffee for breakfast so we went walking only to return late to a ravaged breakfast buffet at the hotel.
Thoroughly recommend this place in the old town, indeed it's hard to fault. Very friendly service and great breakfast. Rooms small but with all that's required including some with balconies. Lovely terrace. Lyon too a gem, amazing food in the real bouchons. Alison and Seamus.
If you plan to stay in historic Vieux Lyon, College Hotel is a great choice! It's location is perfect for exploring the old streets, buildings, historic sites and Gallo-Roman museum. Great choice of restaurants, close to the bus, metro etc and near brides to walk over to other Lyon neighborhoods. The breakfast - in a cute schoolroom setting - is delicious and abundant with nice choices.
Liked the concept of quirky hotel but probably serves me right for not staying in a chain hotel with basic necessities like a manager who acknowledges and supports guests when they have been robbed and gives information about a so called safe behind reception ? Like others before me I stayed in this hotel in the summer and had hundreds of pounds worth of tickets stolen from my room. The rooms are spartan and there is nowhere to hide valuables . Being an honest person I assumed they would be safe in my room as I had the only key apart from the staff. I went out for a few hours and during the hours of seven thirty pm and ten thirty pm my room was burgled along with four other separate guests who all just happened to have football tickets in their rooms. I had not handed my key into reception as I suspected it may get taken by someone as the desk was poorly manned. However I will leave you the trip advisor reader to work out how a random burglar managed to rob separate five rooms in three hour period, take only money and football tickets all from football fans, with no sign of a break in and get past the receptionist who was ten feet allegedly from the hotel lift. The burglar would need to be a Clairvoyant as he would need to guess out of the many rooms which rooms were empty, had football tickets in AND be an expert burglar and be invisible to staff to break into five rooms without a forcible entry. I have another theory but I will let trip advisor readers make there own minds up. My favourite bit of this whole ordeal as other writers have commented is the receptionist did not care one little bit, didn't phone the Police to attend and simply told us to get a taxi at our own expense to the local Police Station. We got no apology and I have had no compensation other than a email after I complained again several weeks later asking for proof of purchase of the tickets. DON'T GO BACK TO COLLEGE ! Only learning experience you will receive is not to book a room without a room safe and CCTV in a four star hotel. Four Star .............really ......?
Interesting place with themed school things. Big hooks, lockers, desks all from school buildings. Clean and with air conditioningoning. A bit quirky. Book your carpark space in advance €18 a night. Nice place next door for breakfast. On the doorstep of the old town. Fooderies everywhere!
