Across the street from the South African Stock Market in the community of Sandton, the Protea Hotel by Marriott is ideally situated to experience urban South Africa, as well as to visit historical places and shopping centers. Recently joining the Marriott organization. Protea Hotels has long been recognized throughout much of Africa with nearly 100 hotels across 8 countries including South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria, Namibia, Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda, With all of these locations, Protea is the largest hospitality group throughout Africa Protea is committed a personalized service experience meeting each visitors requirements. The Balalaika is located in financial district of Sandton across the street from the South African Stock Exchange and Nedbank. The hotel is divided into to separate properties: the Balalaika and the Crown Court. Each property is exquisitely landscaped and offers their own pool and lounging areas. In total there are over 300 guest rooms and suites traditionally and comfortably furnished with there own ensuite bathroom. Two restaurants provide wonderful on-site dining. When visiting Johannesburg, we usually stay at the Balalaika in a two bedroom suite, with one room offering a queen/king bed and the other offer two full sized beds. The views from the rooms are tremendous, and much of the hotel has been remodeled. The bathrooms are very large with wonderful showers and ample space. The property is a lot larger than you suspect from the street, as it was acquired in pieces.
It is about five years since I last stayed at the Balalaika and I was astonished at the amount of regeneration that has taken place in the surrounding area. The Balalaika is exactly the same, a quaint hotel (built in 1949). But today it is dwarfed by the seemingly non stop development that is taking place around it. The hotel remains very well presented with beautiful gardens and pool area. A real sanctuary within a building site. The staff are attentive and there is always someone on hand if you have a query. I would like to see something done regarding the issue of clean towels every day. We stayed for a weekend and despite hanging our towels on the rail ( it clearly states that our towels will only be replaced if they are left on the floor) we still got new towels everyday. When I asked one of the staff about this she said it was because some clients had complained! When you holiday in an area where there is clearly a water shortage you would think clientele would be more responsive to these types of initiative.
This is an exceptional hotel being run and managed from the heart.....whether a first timer or a regular, everyone is greeted like a friend. I have stayed here so many years, and the standards are still totally consistent. A very generous, comprehensive breakfast buffet in the charming dining rooms is complimented with excellent room service choices and service, some of which is linked to the renowned Bull Run adjacent to the hotel. But it's the management and staff who make this hotel a standout, with genuine care and personal service. Rooms are spacious and of course the gardens are stunning - hence the title! What a luxury to have rose bushes, trees and tropical foliage situated around the swimming pools in two places within this long established hotel, bringing bird life and nature to your windows! It isn't a high rise steel and glass establishment, which can seem impersonal, but has kept its character in more graceful design. Can never recommend this hotel enough (now part of the Marriott group)
We loved staying at the Protea Balalaika Hotel in Sandton for three nights before heading off to a Game Park. Close to the Sandton Gautrain station with a free shuttle bus, the hotel was easy to get to after a long flight from Australia. We had breakfast at the hotel the first morning, $18aus, OK but not excellent. The restaurant, however, was excellent and we are there two out of our three nights. There was a small gym which used each morning (so that we could afford the restaurant calories). The staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The building itself is an older style, very charming and set in beautiful gardens with two swimming pools. This hotel is a lovely contrast to the gleaming new glass towers being built all around it in Sandton.
Within walking distance to the Sandton Gautrain, this is always a convenient hotel to stay at. We have stayed there on a few occasions and I will definitely go back. I love the gardens, in summer they are so relaxing after a hard day out! I also love the old school charm of the hotel. It's close to the Sandton Square and you are spoilt for choice with the variety of restaurants in the vicinity.
We had the Sanlam SPF conference at the hotel on Thursday the 01st of June 2017 & Friday 02nd of June 2017. We were handed the handed the wrong room keys. Upon getting to the rooms only to find the people already check in. I was given the key for room 2203 only to find a dentist on a conference check in already. Then I was taken to room 2115. I called reception to let them know that the aircon in my room was not working and I needed extra blankets. They promised to send maintenance which didn't arrive and I didn't receive any blankets either. Our dinner was a mess at the bull run. Food took to long to arrive and when we ordered a waiter by the name of Botlhale kept on asking us if we really knew what we were ordering and tried to convince us otherwise that left a bitter taste in our mouths with the other PA's. If I order well done grilled steak I want well done. I was very disappointed also thinking I have booked my boss at the hotel too this coming week. This is really unacceptable. I wouldn't recommend it again to anyone.
I was in Sandton for two business days. I thus stayed for three nights at the Protea Balalaika Sandton. The hotel was really great and I highly recommend it for anyone staying there. It is full of charm, the gardens are lovely and you are right in the heart of banking and legal office buildings, perhaps other things. There may be more expensive and luxurious hotels nearby. However this one has some historical charm, has the feel of a gigantic B&B and my room was certainly well furnished. I don't have any criticism of the place, except maybe the service in the restaurant was a little slow. The room and food there was a very, very good value. I have no complaints, only give 5 stars for the extraordinary. I certainly would stay again. UBER and taxis readily available and there is a regular shuttle to the train station nearby. WiFI worked very well. Restaurants offered wide variety and there was a nice bar and many beautiful sitting venues within the many buildings. It can be confusing to find your room so make sure you understand the directions to get there.
I stayed at Protea Balalaika from 21-26 May 2017. Had a pleasant stay as usual. It was a business trip - so spent most days out for meetings, etc. The weather was awesome - so added to the beauty of the stay. Food is quite good at the hotel. Bull Run is simply good for evenings. Lots of visitors come by there to enjoy the fun filled evenings. Always worthwhile going there. Look forward to the next time soon !
Nice hotel ... but: eggstation during bfast is problematic. Waiting close to 15 mins for omelette.... Pls see pix of ZAR 590 transport to O.R. Tambo Intl. Really? This is not commensurate with standard of hot plus unsafe!
Stayed at the Balalaika for only 1 night in April prior to our flight to Victoria Falls. The hotel is very nice with old world charm and grace. Room was beautifully appointed and the hotel amenities were plentiful. Wished we had longer to stay here. In the morning we had to take an early shuttle to the airport to make our flight and I unfortunately left my cell phone on the table in one of the seating areas in the lobby. I didn't realize this until we were at the airport. A quick call to the concierge at the hotel and the phone had thankfully been turned in. The staff at the hotel were able to bring the phone to me at the airport prior to boarding and avoided a disaster! I cannot thank the staff enough for going out of there way to ensure that my vacation was not ruined and all my pictures from the previous 16 days and 3 other countries were not lost! WELL DONE BALALAIKA!!!
