Although the hotel is located in a desirable location, it needs a bit of updating to their rooms. Our first visit to this hotel was not my favourite. We showed up at 3pm and was told (not in a kind way) we had to wait until 4pm to check in, unless it stated I wanted an early check in upon booking. OK, duly noted. Our next visit a couple weeks later, I did just that. We arrived at 2pm and was able to check in no problem. Depending on who you get, the customer service is great or its just ok. I would personally recommend that this hotel have an earlier check-in time, such as 3pm. So our first room we were assigned had an issue with a strange hum that came from the light switch. Once the lights were on, the high pitch hum sounded. Turn them off and its all good. This was ok by me and my family since the lights are shut off when we are sleeping and we are hardly in the room. They offered to move us, which we appreciated, but said we were quite fine and could deal with it... UNTIL the morning when we found out the shower faucet was not only backwards, but could not be turned past a specific point (I figure they tried repairing it from being loose by screwing the faucet to the wall - but didn't test it once complete). So, no hot shower in the morning, which really sucked. Ultimately, we did end up moving to another room for our second night. One floor up with an elevator that requires you to swipe your room key (card) to move anywhere. This was a major pain. Not only that.. if you prefer the stairs (which we do) we couldn't take them! They are locked! People can go down the stairs but cannot go up. I personally didn't like not being able to run up the stairs. It also sucks when you have fists full of luggage and a cranky kid.. and both room keys don't work. So now you have to venture back to the front desk again. Did I mention how much of a pain the elevator was? After spending the time to get the room figured out and move our luggage for my family of 4, I still did not have time for a shower. After venting to a couple friends they said that I should complain and get a discount. Honesty I am not a complainer unless I truly deem it necessary (if I absolutely needed a shower, it would have been different). I do feel that this hotel should have compensated something considering we had 2 issues with one being kind of major, but why should I be the one to bring it up? It should be noted on file. I'm the one who is forking out $$$ to have a good sleep and that's the only thing I truly wanted. A really good sleep in a comfortable bed. Speaking of which... my sleep was not the best, considering the pillows are so round and hard, plus the double bed (not queen) was quite firm to sleep on. However, I must understand that some people prefer this and it must be super difficulty to please everyone on what they determine to be a "comfortable sleep". However, all in all, I do like the location and it has a Denny's attached, along with a bar/lounge called "Bar One". Just a note.. if you order food from Bar One, the server gets the food from Denny's which could take a bit of time if Denny's has some customers. But I'll save that for another review... Overall, I would stay here again, which I probably will, but next time I will bring my own pillow if I am able. I will also check the room for hot water first thing before we get settled, now that I've been "burned" once already. But yes, it is a nice hotel and good for families. My review is based on what I experienced. As unfortunate as it was, I'm sure my next visit won't require so much of my time waiting in line at the front desk, which I did way too much of over the 2 days we were there. Oh, and another thing... if you're planning for breakfast at Denny's on Sunday, be prepared for it to be super busy so give yourself time.
It's an original hotel to the city, could use a once over. My room was comfortable, bed was great, shower hot. Prices fluctuate quite a bit, I'm guessing the arena across the street has something to do with it. Gym is non existent, unless cardio bikes are your game.
It is a nice hotel in downtown Grande Prairie. The facilities are nice and the room is quaint but look a little dated. The attached bar has a great feel. The staff is very friendly. It is a nice hotel with great accommodating staff.
Requested corner queen room got upgraded to King room with sofa. Great. Fridge, microwave, coffee maker, clean and well appointed. Staff good, check in and out quick. No free breakfast which is getting to be uncommon, but they had muffins and coffee in the lobby. No airport shuttle.
We came to GP for one night. 6 hour drive and we wanted somewhere nice to stay. We have stayed at other Sandman hotels in the past and have always had great experiences. This one is over priced for what you get... Moreso what you don't get. No fridge in the room. The shower was awful and the room was small. Disappointed. On a good note: front desk lady was nice and we were able to check in at 1am.
My friend and I checked in with 2 friends who had their own room. We requested we be put on the same floor, we weren't! We got to our room and it was stifling hot! The A/C was broken and so was the fridge, luckily the front desk moved us to another room which happened to be on the same floor as our friends, right next door to us! Why this wasn't done in the first place when we made the request is beyond me! My room key never did work! There a train that runs behind the hotel. Even though the train did not run during the night it certainly scared us when we were loading our vehicle upon checking out! Lol Denny's is located in the hotel which is convenient!
The property is situated along side a CN rail road track so you will hear the trains and their horns. It has a Denny's restaurant adjacent to it. Check in was on the slower side but not too bad. The room is a pretty good size and has everything you need except an in-room safe. The in-room air conditioner is too loud; even on low and it is difficult to sleep due to the noise. The carpet is in need of a deep steam cleaning. The bed was comfortable but they should have thin pillows available instead of them all being quite large and thick. Bathroom sink tap had the single lever faucet reversed with cold to the left and hot to the right. Shower pressure is minimal. Guest relations personnel are nice and accommodating.
I'm currently staying here for a few weeks while I'm in GP for work and my company booked the hotel for myself and a co-worker. The building itself is fine. It could probably use some updating in some areas, but I saw another review that said renovations are on their way, so no real complaints there. Swipe-card access in the stairwell to the floors would be nice, so you don't always have to take the elevator up. The rooms are clean, beds are decent, and the little bit of interaction I've had with the staff so far has been good. My only real complaint thus far is the wifi. If you're only concerned with connecting your phone to the wifi for the few days you're here to save on your cellular data you'll probably be fine. If you're staying for a few weeks and have a laptop, or video game console, you'll quickly find out how horrible the wifi is. 3Mbps is slow, but bearable... if it was at all stable.
The whole hotel reeks of cigarettes. The second floor is smoking. You can smell smoke 🚬 in elevator, hallways, stairwells. We had itchy red eyes and coughed for days after staying here. The hall ways are dated. Room was clean, comfortable beds , woken up early to sounds of trucks reving for hours. In the Year 2017 We all know the stastitictics of second hand smoke, I am surprised a Hotel chain would still allow smoking in The rooms. If So smoking rooms should be contained on top floor, with proper ventilation vents and air purifiers with doors closed to stairwells.
Almost every night I get woken up by something. About every second day I get woken up by the trains going by the hotel that blow the whistle for the crossings at each end of the hotel. On the weekends I get woken up by the guests that don't have to work the next day. The, "Whitecourt Wolverines", one weekend. But tonight is special, I'm laying her in bed at 03:30am listening to the staff from Denny's restaurant pressure wash different items from the kitchen laid out in the parking lot so they are ready for the day shift. I phoned the front desk to complain and apparently this is normal. Unbelievable.
